There was a fantastic turnout for the 1st annual Gospel Fest held at Black Mountain Recreation Center where the program of vocals and dance played to a full house. There was no lack of talent or spirit, but there were some unnecessary technical problems that hopefully will be resolved before the 2nd annual event is held next year.

The bleachers looked too treacherous for choirs to stand on and I breathed a sigh of relief when no one tumbled. But most disappointing was the inadequate sound system. There were not enough mikes nor were they positioned strategically. Some of the microphones were not even working. Isn’t this something that could be checked out in advance?

The instrumental support was marvelous, but the bass on the sound system often drowned out the vocals. Next year they need to focus on mixing and staging. On the positive, the evening was a tribute to the immense amount of talent, dedication and heart that the devotees bring to their religious community. Robin Eldridge as emcee was powerful, funny and natural.

The young "angels,","steppers," and white-robed maiden dancers evoked just the right reaction from the audience who showered them with loving appreciation. Highlights of the evening were the incredible solos by Katie Waters, who voice could lift the roof, and the fabulous rhythmic choreography of the combined choirs’ conductor. We look forward to next year!

If you missed Genevieve last weekend at Piero’s, you still have another chance to enjoy the velvet voice of one of my favorite female Vegas vocalists at one of my favorite Vegas restaurant/lounges. You’ve got two good reasons to get out of the house this Friday or Saturday or both. Genevieve delivers a song in pure golden tones, and she is equally at home with jazz, blues or gospel. I had the pleasure one evening at Josette’s Bistro to hear snippets of an aria, just a hint of her operatic training. Piero’s Italian Restaurant is for locals in the know who want a classy evening out where the staff still remembers what it means to give service and make you feel like a somebody. The food is delicious and the Manhatten’s near perfection. This is definitely a place you dress to dine and a diamond choker is not out of place. If there are any made guys left in Vegas, you’ll see them here. Genevieve will be singing in the lounge from 7-10 pm Fri Feb 23 and Sat Feb 24. You can just drop by for a drink, but I do recommend the cioppino. It is to die for. Pieros’ Italian Restaurant 355 Convention Center Way (off Paradise and Desert Inn). 702-369-2305
