Did pornography or politics bring down my site?

Now that I have vented over the deletion of my site from BlueHost.com, I continue to speculate over what exactly happened. Certainly the lame explanation from BlueHost does not shed any light on the real reason the entire database and all backups were erased from cyber memory.

The way I was so quickly shuttled from the customer service rep with a terse and quiet, "You need to speak to my supervisor about this," was the first giveaway that something odd was afoot. Then when I’m given a lot of quick-talking mumbo jumbo from the supervisor about "abuse" and "overloading the server," my normally not devious mind begins to pose questions. Finally, I’m informed that even responding to that single email within the short time period allowed would not have restored my site. BlueHost.com would not be hosting my site anymore - period. I would have to find another server. How could I not ask what was REALLY going on? Indeed.

Could it be that my site was hi-jacked by child porn pirates? Might it be that a German gambling consortium had managed to squeeze through a back portal and seize control of my humble database? Or had some of my articles, especially those on the disappearance of able-bodied Latino illegal aliens into our private prison systems – under clauses of the Patriot Act which cause them to serve lives as slave laborers with the name "Jose" Doe? No one else was writing this story. And not long after, judges are indicted in Texas for taking payments for each body (disproportionately Latino) they send to private prisons where the poor sods are forced to work to profit the corporations that run the slave labor camps.

I don’t usually adhere to conspiracy theories, but the deletion of my site without any real explanation and so clouded in mysterious language like "the decision came from the highest levels of our department" makes me wonder what really happened and why.

Update on CineVegas (La Proxima Ola)

I’ve viewed five films so far at the 2007 CineVegas Film Festival happening at Brendan Theatres at the Palms, and have been concentrating on films by directors making their debuts with either first or second releases, especially foreign language. Part of the mission of CineVegas is to provide the opportunity to experience film you would not otherwise see in Las Vegas (or few other American venues.) The films are open to the public. More info is at the website listed at the end of this article.

“I Don’t Want to Sleep Alone” is set in Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia) and directed by Tsai Ming-Liang. I must give this a mixed review in that the story of a mattress, two men and two women and the noisy, sweaty, gritty backstreets of Kuala Lumpur is intriguing to a point. But it shifts abruptly and uncomfortably at the end of the film from stark realism to misty surrealism. Acting is suberb. As a speedy Westerner you find yourself slowly winding down to the pace of the sultry tropics. Others might find the realism appealing, but personally, I don’t enjoy watching a film that focuses so much on bodily functions. Original version with English subtitles.

“Viva” by Director Anna Biller (who also starred) was set in the swinging 70’s when nudism and free love were synonomous with California. Once you get past the fun part of totally 70’s decor, dress and all the kitsch of the era, the film is just plain silly. Billed as a tribute to vintage sexploitation films, I felt a bit exploited as audience. Cast and Director present for Q&A. American.

The Festival is also introducing “La Proxima Ola” (The Next Wave), films by the new cinema mexicana which hold promise for a fascinating surrealist expression particular to the Spanish mind. Some of the films were more successful than others, all have been technically excellent with a remarkable authenticity both in acting and art direction.

“Once Upon a Time Maria” (Eros Una Vez Maria) is by first time feature film director Jesus Magana Vazquez. It is a stream of consciousness erotic saga that moves from fragmented memories of the various (and many) Marias of the protagonist’s life. Replete with sexual content and interesting score of original jazz and electronic music, the film is shot sometimes in black and white, otherwise in muted palette, sometimes with digital and sometimes 16 mm film. Jesus is obviously experimenting. The director was on hand for Q&A; he charmingly admitted that the film has no message and that filmmaking for him at this stage is a “game.” Spanish with English subtitles.

“Morirse En Domingo“’s (English title “Never on Sunday“) should really be “To Die on a Sunday” or more aptly “Never Die on a Sunday.” This is director Daniel Gruener’s second film, the first ten long years ago was a Mexican horror film “Sobrenatural.” This time round Gruener tackles an unbelievable tale of the death of a beloved familiy member and the odyssey of his body and his nephew as they are caught in one intrigue following another – all the more arresting because it is based on a true story. This film codifies that truth is indeed stranger than fiction. If you have firsthand experience with Mexico you’ll even more appreciate the inside look at the underbelly of Mexican life with its flawed and complex textures. Gruener is a master of tension and mixes just enough surrealism to give the film that special Latin flavor. Cinematography, musical score and acting are superb. Gruener was also on hand for Q&A. Spanish with English subtitles.

I don’t want to say that I have left the best for last, because I thoroughly enjoyed Gruener’s film. But “Malos Habitos” or “Bad Habits” by director Simon Brass was such a visual delight and so exquisitely produced that it remains my favorite so far. The entwined tales of women with eating disorders is set in another Mexico from Gruener – this is the Mexico of privilege beside the Mexico of fervent Catholicism. Food is a tool, a symbol of weakness, of power, of pleasure. Brass comes from a background of directing commercials and he has all the requisite skill to produce breaktaking dream-visions which combine the baroque palette of Velaquez with the imagery of surrealists like Dali. He has assembled a wonderful cast of natural actors who lead us most convincingly (including extreme weight loss and gain) along their excruciating journeys. Brass was also available for a Q&A session after the film. Spanish with English subtitles.

This is a taste of high calibre film coming from our southern neighbors. The directors exhibit a remarkable ability to combine grittiness with humor, pathos with eros while telling a good story with finely-drawn characters of great believability. Despite the melodramatic cirumstances of complicated lives, our glimpes into the bottomless depths are achieved by subtle and often brief dialogues, only rarely punctuated by intense emotional outburst. I am left with a hunger for more.

CineVegas Film Festival # 9

This little film festival in Las Vegas is finally getting respect, and judging by the schedule of films, is screening a wide spectrum which should meet the taste and interests of just about any movie fan. You start with the glitz of the Opening of “Ocean’s Thirteen” and the super-cool George Clooney, Brad Pitt and Matt Damon gracing the Red Carpet on Wed Jun 06 5:30p at the Palms and end the 10 day festival with Ben Kingsley receiving the Vanguard Actor Award followed by a screening of his black comedy “You Kill Me.”

In between you fill the days with an eclectic mix of tantalizing selections from the powerful Mexican cinema industry, – some fascinating documentaries including “Mr Untouchable” of the Harlem drug trade of the 70’s and “The Devil Came On Horseback” witnessing the genocide in Darfur, – throw in World Premieres such as “All God’s Children Can Dance,” an English-language version of a Murakami short story, – enhance with British and Hollywood comedies – and still the varied selection is far from complete. Student filmmakers have a chance to display their promise with Short Films UNLV and Short Films CCSN.

Complement the mix with Mike Newell’s receipt of the Vanguard Director Award, Jerry Weintraub’s Vanguard Producer Award, Charlize Theron’s Half-Life Award – and a reprise of David Lynch’s 1986 “Blue Velvet” and you begin to sense the scope of the selection.

I’m the kind of person who likes to have a good time and I don’t have a lot of hang-ups about the kinds or types of people to help me achieve that. I figure there are good people everywhere and they come in all shapes, sizes and life-style preferences. So I don’t like to stereotype a place as to “this is a biker-bar,” or this is a “gay bar,” or this is a “black club,” but would rather use a criteria such as great dance music and a high energy, let yourself go kind of ambiance.

What I’m leading up to here is a take on Elvis’ Restaurant and Lounge on Sahara and how an eclectic group of partiers can get it on with everybody feeling welcome and nobody being uptight. When you first walk in the door, you get a wild impression of the cantina in Star Wars, only Las Vegas style. The owner Elvis Nargi is decked out just how he should be in star-studded black, enormous belt buckle on his generous belly and hair couiffed in just that “sideburns and wings style” you would expect in a Vegas “King” impersonator.

Karin Denise is MC on Friday and Saturday nights, taking charge of the business of everybody enjoying themselves – from her lusty vocals to her commanding, high-voltage personality. Read more about her at karindenise.com. Elvis treated the full house to shots of Tequila with the waitress letting the good times pour directly into the gaping jaws of one enthusiastic dancer. As long as he wasn’t driving….it’s his hangover, not mine.

I was heartsick when Zingers closed. But it looks like some of the crowd moved across the street with Karin to Elvis’. But don’t let silly bias keep you away. This is a fun place to party, all evening I’m sure, but certainly when other spots are shutting down and you just aren’t ready to give it up yet. Look for Karin and Elvis to perform from 9:30p-1:30a at Elvis’ Restaurant & Lounge Friday and Saturday nights. Great dance music. Italian Food. Open 24 hrs. No cover charge and the drinks are very reasonable ($3 beers.)

This is heads up for parents looking for creative outlets for children from ages 6 through high school. Some of the classes for older kids are available to adults as well. The first play “La Institutriz“, by Russian Anton Chekov is a classic about dignity and respect in an abusive world. “Se Busca” by Salvador Enriquez, deals with a man desiring escape from reality. This is going to be an all day celebration of Hispanic culture with exhibits, food, and of course, music. What is any Latino celebration without music? The event is co-sponsored by the City of Las Vegas Dept of Leisure Services and the Las Vegas Mexican Patriotic Committee. If you love Latin music, there are two big events coming up in March, both sponsored by the Performing Arts Division of the City of Las Vegas.

Mariachi Plata de Las Vegas, purported to be Las Vegas’ favorite mariachi band will perform at the East Las Vegas Community Center Sat Mar 24 @ 7pm. This local group is made up of Clark Co School District educators who have vowed to keep the mariachi tradtion alive. The tickets are $10, free for children under 5. Esperanza y Maggie Por La Manana

My friend and powerhouse, Esperanza Montelongo, is no longer co-hosting the radio show 8-9 am M-F on KRLV 1340 AM, Nevada’s only Spanish Talk Radio Station. “Hey girlfriend!” Esperanza is the type who keeps nothing close to the chest and you are NEVER in doubt to what she thinks about anything – the perfect personality for talk radio. Herself a true bi-lingual (raised in Nebraska), she keeps the show and its guests both Spanish and English.

Partnering with Annie Jo of KLAV 1230 AM radio (4-5 pm M-F), the two personalities (both larger than life) are sponsoring Spanish-English Networking Mixers through Across the Board, LLC. The Jan 23 event was at Las Palmas Mariachi Restaurant and featured Chinese martial arts, Brazilian jazz, Sandra Benton of Menopause, Paul Stubblefield of the Stirling Club and some very HOT Latinas like up and coming Facia and ending the evening with Dalinda Torres & Sonora Mar Y Mar. It is Latino and soul, so of course, there is DANCING. Firefly Tapas and Salsa

If you are looking for that kind of lively, Latin atmosphere to sip Mojitas and Sangria while nibbling at an array of tantalizing tapas, then Firefly on Paradise is “el lugar” to see and been seen. With the vast variety of tapas on the menu, I would suggest a group of friends so you can have a tasting event. The music is pulsating and you are elbow to elbow on a good night. Also open for lunch. Thursday nights feature a D.J. playing hot salsa rhythms from about 10:30 pm to 2:00 am – true Latin hours.

For those of you who aren’t familiar with tapas, they are a Spanish invention of small servings of savory goodies which range from cold hams, cheeses, anchovies and gaspacho to hot dishes of tortilla a la espanola (omelette-like), meat and shrimp skewers, fried calamari, albondigas (meatballs) and empanadas (pastry stuffed with roast pork). My personal favorite is Stuffed Dates (bacon-wrapped, smoked almond, red wine reduction, blue cheese) for $4. There are 62 tapas on the menu, so there is something for every taste and desire. 3900 Paradise Rd, Ste A (across from Howard Hughes Center, just down from Flamingo).
