California Court upholds same sex marriage ban

Back in the Midwest on that great expanse of prairie, we used to dream of California as a beacon of light and progress and everything that we considered forward thinking in American society.

We used to believe that as goes California, will the rest follow in time.

I never thought I would see the day when Iowa was more socially advanced than the Golden State.

The California High Court has just ruled that the ban on same sex marriage, as voted by the electorate in one of California’s famous (and infamous) propositions, must stand. They cited that the constitution allowed for the voters to make such restrictive legislation and that it was not the Court’s place to interecede.

I certainly am no legal scholar, but am certain there is adequate precedent in the law to support the Court’s position. But I do feel grateful that the California voters have not voted to reinstate slavery – although in a sense, that is just what this ban represents. It this isn’t tyranny of rule by majority and violation of minority rights, I don’t know what is.

I hope that the voters don’t decide one day to make Spanish the official language of California – or to deny still other civil liberties based on sexual orientation. Could gays be required to carry special ID cards because the voters are hoodwinked into thinking that such an action would help save society from the scurge of AIDS?

More than anything, I pray the rest of the country will NOT follow California’s lead – that we will move forward instead of backward in our national vision to provide equal protection under the law for all citizens, regardless of race, ethnicity, gender, age or sexual orientation.

World Affairs Council back with Ruan Zongze

I’m happy to report that the Las Vegas chapter of the World Affairs Council is back in action. They have changed their name and merged with the local chapter of the NCFR (Nevada Council on Foreign Relations) to form the Nevada World Affairs Council.

Their next major event will be an evening with Ruan Zongze, the Minister Counselor of the political department of the Chinese Embassy in Washington, DC. Mr. Ruan’s topic is "China-U.S. Relations in an Emerging New World Economy." The UNLV Institute for Security Studies is co-sponsor for the dinner at the Pinot Brasserie, Venetian Hotel.

Both Members and non-members are invited to attend Friday May 29 from 6pm-9pm. The cost is $50 pp, paid with cash or check at the door, and includes a 3 course dinner. The no-host cash bar and social reception are from 6pm-7pm, with dinner starting at 7pm. Mr. Ruan will speak and allow time for questions.

Regular meetings of the WAC are held on the second Wednesday each month, 6:30p-8:00p, at venues alternating between the eastside and the westside. There is a nominal charge (usually $20 pp) which may include a wine tasting or appetizers, depending on the locale.

The monthly meetings revolve around specific discussion topics such as "Peace in Peril: The Indian sub-continent – Afghanistan, Pakistan, India and the U.S." The discussions are lead by a moderator with active group participation in the form of questions, comments and friendly debate.

The merger of the WAC and NCFR makes sense. Both have the same mission – to provide a forum for globally-thinking Las Vegans to meet, to be informed by national and international figures, and to discuss international events, especially the direction or misdirection of American foreign policy.

Las Vegas has a bad reputation for low intellectualism, probably not undeserved. This group demonstrates that there are people here who think – and think about a world beyond work, daily life and the Strip. If you are looking to meet other people interested in the complex and intriguing U.S. role in global politics, this is the group for you.

Did pornography or politics bring down my site?

Now that I have vented over the deletion of my site from BlueHost.com, I continue to speculate over what exactly happened. Certainly the lame explanation from BlueHost does not shed any light on the real reason the entire database and all backups were erased from cyber memory.

The way I was so quickly shuttled from the customer service rep with a terse and quiet, "You need to speak to my supervisor about this," was the first giveaway that something odd was afoot. Then when I’m given a lot of quick-talking mumbo jumbo from the supervisor about "abuse" and "overloading the server," my normally not devious mind begins to pose questions. Finally, I’m informed that even responding to that single email within the short time period allowed would not have restored my site. BlueHost.com would not be hosting my site anymore - period. I would have to find another server. How could I not ask what was REALLY going on? Indeed.

Could it be that my site was hi-jacked by child porn pirates? Might it be that a German gambling consortium had managed to squeeze through a back portal and seize control of my humble database? Or had some of my articles, especially those on the disappearance of able-bodied Latino illegal aliens into our private prison systems – under clauses of the Patriot Act which cause them to serve lives as slave laborers with the name "Jose" Doe? No one else was writing this story. And not long after, judges are indicted in Texas for taking payments for each body (disproportionately Latino) they send to private prisons where the poor sods are forced to work to profit the corporations that run the slave labor camps.

I don’t usually adhere to conspiracy theories, but the deletion of my site without any real explanation and so clouded in mysterious language like "the decision came from the highest levels of our department" makes me wonder what really happened and why.

The Law in Russia and Las Vegas – LVWAC luncheon

You are invited to lunch with the Las Vegas World Affairs Council Oct 26 @ 11:30a for their 3rd annual public luncheon highlighting visits to our city by delegations of Eastern European judges. This year the guest judges are from Russia and the luncheon will include a discussion of “The Law in Russia and Las Vegas” with several of the judges participating with comments and in Q&A.

The program itself is hosted by Senior US District Court Judge Lloyd George, who has hosted many delegations of Eastern European judges here in Las Vegas.

Venue is the Petrus Room at Wynn Las Vegas. Registration and networking starts at 11:30 am with lunch and speaking event from noon to 1pm. Cost is $40 members/$50 non-members/$20 students and includes lunch. Public welcome and encouraged to attend. For more info, go to the LVWAC website lvwac.org.

Note: I attended the luncheon last year with the Ukranian judges. It was my first LVWAC function and I was hooked! What a fascinating group of people and level of discussion. If you have a world view that extends beyond the city limits of this town and hunger to interact with others with similar perspective, check out this dynamic group with wide interests and global experience. But don’t be intimidated – an interest in national politics, international affairs and the wide world are all that are required to participate and enjoy.

Genevieve’s name was submitted by peers and music professionals for great contribution to the legacy of music. The existence of anime clubs is a really interesting phenomena. I have watched a fair share of the Japanese cartoons (animation) and it just doesn’t strike a cord with me. But the world-wide appeal among a very select segment of the population is undeniable. These are a dedicated lot and they have a group here that meets on the 2nd Saturday for a marathon viewing from 10:30a-4:30p. They show chapters from several series and caution that some of the cartoons are not suitable for children. Admission is Free. A global environmental musical event called “Live Earth” took place 7-7-7. Let’s hope it’s true that today is the luckiest day in a thousand years cause the planet could use some help. Stars performed at nine concerts around the world to raise awareness of the environmental trends which portend massive climate change for the third rock from the sun that we call home.

If you are looking for an interesting day trip, don’t forget the drive to Overton and the Lost City Musuem. Besides the regular exhibit, they are featuring this special treatise of Pauite Elders. It took over five years to create this project with interviews and photographs of Southern Pauite Elders. The participants include the five bands of the Pauite Tribe of Utah, the Kaibab Tribe of AZ, the San Juan Tribe of UT, the Las Vegas, Moapa and Pahrump Tribes of NV and the Chemehuevi Tribe of CA. The display was created by writer Logan Hebner and photographer Michael Plyler and continues until the end of June.
