Hall of Fame Boxing Referee Richard Steele and Steve Oshins, both of Las Vegas and co-owners of Steele Cage Promotions, LLC (steelecage.com) and the International Fighting Organization, LLC (IFO), have teamed up to present Fireworks in the Cage: Mixed Martial Arts (MMA), a combination of different styles of fighting with a wide array of techniques drawing from multiple combat and boxing arts.

Left out of the official definition of MMA is the setting of a circular caged "ring", fenced with a chicken-wire type weave, with well padded edges and open only at the top. It’s a civilized version of the cages you see in a genre of film like "Escape from New York." Steele Cage produces a monthly TV show and weekly interviews @ 2 am early Sat mornings on Urban Lyrics TV – Channel 25 or Cable 14. Steele Cage/IFO commissioned Javier Voltaje to create their official theme song which he also recorded. Voltaje is a Cuban reggaeton star who wrote Cubajala, topping the charts in Europe. Reggaeton is a blend of Jamaican and Latin American sounds with rap and hip hop. The first evening of fighting was 7-7-7 at the Orleans Arena, Fireworks in the Cage II was Sep 01 at the Riviera, Version III back at the Orleans on Sep 21. Sat Aug 25 is a presentation by the Japanese American Cultural Society of “Kendo,” or “the way of the sword.” Kendo is the art of Japanese Samurai swordsmanship and one of the traditional Japanese martial arts. Black Powder Rifle and Pistol Shoot

And I hear complaints from people that there is nothing to do in Vegas unless you like gambling…..

If you are looking for something really different, try the Spring Mountain Free Trappers group which hosts a black powder muzzle loading rifle and pistol shoot twice a month in the summer and once a month in the winter.

Call to see if we are considered in winter now.

They also put on a knife and hawk (hatchett) throwing competition. I spoke with Dan (Buffalo Rump – see photo) and am assured all interested are welcome.

The firearms are replicas of traditional black powder weapons like Davy Crockett used, restricted to round ball only, 60 grain limit. Some of the 30-odd regulars make and sell leather clothing and are skilled at knife and hawk (hatchett) production. They can repair a gun and pride themselves on knowing the ways of the mountain men. You don’t have to have any firearms and you don’t have to compete.

They usually camp, are there all day Saturday and continue until about noon on Sunday. Some people drive up for the day in the RV’s, so roughing it is not required. The shoot takes place the 1st full weekend and 3rd weekend of the month during summer, the 1st weekend during winter. Most of the year the members meet at Lovell Canyon or CC Springs, on the way to Pahrump. The group summers at the Blue Tree Area in Lee’s Canyon (north on 95 towards Reno) from the first weekend in May. Buffalo Rump cautions that there is a small sign to indicate the turn.

The yearly Rendevzous is in the late fall at Spring Mt. Ranch State Park by Red Rock with about 250 people competing in rifle, pistol, smooth bore, hawk, knife, lance, archery, firestart, survival trek, competitions for kids and ladies and a dutch oven contest (that’s cooking.)

For those of you who don’t know, the Gladiators are members of the AFL (Arena Football League). Founded in 1997, they are part of the Western division of the American Conference. According to Wikipedia, arena football is a sport invented by Jim Forster of the US Football League and the NFL. He came up with the idea of indoor (arena) football while watching an indoor soccer game in 1981 at Madison Square Gardens in NYC. The $10,000-Buy-In Main Event of the 38th World Series of Poker started Jul 6 and runs through Jul 17. The biggest poker event in the world, the runup to the No Limit Texas Hold ‘em Main Event began five weeks ago.

The American Bicycle Association (ABA) Las Vegas Nationals of Bicycle Motocross (BMX) are Jul 13 – 15 at the South Point Events Arena with free entry. USA National Wrestling Championships

The 2007 U.S. World Team Trials will determine who will represent the USA at the 2007 World Wrestling Chamionships in Baku, Azerbaijan. The competitions will be held at the Las Vegas Convention Center Jun 9 & 10 with three Olympic wrestling styles: men’s freestyle, men’s Greco-Roman and women’s freestyle. For the uninitiated, Streetball is an urban form of basketball, roughed out on playgrounds and in gyms around the world. It’s the “two-on-two” or “your gang vs my gang” challenges you see on TV and in the movies. The rules of Streetball are much the same as normal basketball, but Streetball is more about one-on-one matchups between the offense and defender. The attacker performs flashy moves while driving to the basket – dramatic choreographed crossovers, jab steps, and other fake-outs. The sport is known for spectacular dunks and alley oops, mind-boggling ball handling, and big time trash talking. Almost anything goes to psyche out the opponent with “moves” designed to confuse or trick the defender into looking away, losing focus. Unique to Streetball is having an “MC” with a mike commenting on the game while on the court, in the midst of the play.

Jun 08-10 Las Vegas is host again to the John Deere Vegas Super Show (2nd Annual) for the National Barrel Horse Association (NBHA). All competitors must be members of the NBHA, but memberships will be sold at the show. The association was formed in 1992 to promote the sport of barrel racing and last year over 700 competitors showed their stuff at the the 1st Annual John Deere Vegas Super Show.

The Las Vegas Gladiators play the Los Angeles Avengers this Sun May 6 at the Orleans Arena. For those of you who don??????? know, the Gladiators are members of the AFL (Arena Football League). Founded in 1997, they are part of the Western division of the American Conference. They won a Division title in 2002 and have yet to win any conference titles. Looking at their stats, they desperately need a win of any kind.

According to Wikipedia, arena football is a sport invented by Jim Forster of the US Football League and the NFL. He came up with the idea of indoor (arena) football while watching an indoor soccer game in 1981 at Madison Square Gardens in NYC. He launched the Arena Football League in 1987 based on a specific set of patented rules. Minor league AFL, known as af2, was initiated in 2000.

Dragon Boat Festival

In the beautiful setting of Lake Las Vegas, 44 foot, teak Chinese war canoes will compete in three 500-meter race heats on Sat May 5, starting at 10am. Each canoe has a 22-person crew with 20 paddlers, a drummer and a steerman. Teams come from US and Canada to compete.

Ceremonies will start at MonteLago Village on Fri May 4 @ 6:30pm with the “Dotting of the Eye Ceremony,” a tradition which awakens the Dragon spirit. Enjoy a performance of the Shaolin dancers followed by a screening of “South Pacific” on the Events Plaza.

UNLV Concrete Canoe Races UC San Diego

The Las Vegas Hawaiian Community Club (LVHCC) Outrigger Canoe Program has worked with the UNLV concrete canoe team to compete against the University of California-San Diego in races scheduled for April 12-14. The Society of Civil and Structural Engineers Student Conference sponsors competitions in steel bridge, concrete canoe, conrete bowling, concrete frisbee and whatever else you could dream of in cement. Asian Ladies Capture the Ice

We all are impressed by the stereotype given to our Asian sisters and brothers – talent, hard work, great fine motor skills, discipline, cool under pressure, single-minded determination. The World Chamiponships in Tokyo only proves the point. The gold goes to Miki Ando, Japan, silver to Mao Asada, Japan, and bronze to Yu-Na Kim, Korea. It’s hard to imagine being any better. They exhibit grace and athleticism. The new power is obviously in the East. American Kimmie Meissner ranked fourth. Men’s skating is not yet so dominated by Asian brothers. Brian Joubert, France took gold, Daisuke Takahashi, Japan silver and Stephane Lambiel of France bronze. Evan Lysacek was the highest ranked American at 5th. ESPN2 is showing Ladies Short/Free Dance today from 2:30p-6:00p. Ladies Free/Free Dance will be shown on ESPN from 6:00p-9:00p tonight. Rebroadcast of Ladies Free/Pairs skating is on ESPN in the pre-dawn hours from 3:00a-5:30a.

The Exhibition program will be broadcast on ESPN tomorrow, Sun Mar 25 from 5:00p-7:00p. Warning: there is so much advertising you could go crazy. Tivo or tape if you can. www.usfa.org
