"Dr. Conversation" Loren Ekroth PhD

The following excerpt is from an article in Better Conversation Newsletter put together by my friend Loren Ekroth, PhD. It explains why those late night conversations under the stars, around the campfire, or over a brandy are so satisfying. The eternal questions about life, its meaning and our purpose (or even if we have one) seem to stimulate some pleasure endorphins released only by exercising our brains. Yes, deep talk actually makes you happy (happier.)

“Wow! Profound news: That people who participate in deep, meaningful conversations are happier than those who mainly engage in routine talk or small talk – like “weather talk” or gossip or which TV shows they liked.

Could this be so? Well, at least tentatively when based upon the recent study by University of Arizona psychology professor Matthias Mehl. His published study involved 79 college students, 32 men and 47 women, who agreed to wear an electronically activated recorder that recorded little segments of their conversations for four days. Those were then classified by researchers as either substantive talk about current affairs, philosophy, etc. or small and routine talk.

The findings? Those whose self-reports on satisfaction with life and other happiness measures were higher had engaged in a much greater percentage of substantive conversations than those with lower “satisfaction with life” reports. Professor Mehl is continuing his studies in this area, so stay tuned to learn if future research confirms his initial findings.”

David is The Garden Dude from California who has perfected, or at least is on the road to mastering, the art of growing veggies totally organically in pots. Not that kind of pot!

He’s posted recipes and videos on cooking up these veggies and other healthy stuff like fresh fish. Being a true California Dude, David has music to really get you in the Dude Mood. Go to the resources tab on his site and select “veggie songs.”

We like to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day in a big way here at the Beach. It takes two PhD’s to put this special Black & Tan together. Use a lager on the bottom and pour the Guinness on top. It helps that one of the PhD’s is in chemical engineering. He’s the one that came up with the spoon.

The Temptation of Vegas

I feel like a woman with a husband and a lover. They each speak to a deep need in my soul, but neither, on its own, can satisfy me. That’s the choice between Las Vegas and Shell Beach. They pull at me, hard, in opposite directions and I need to be both places to feel complete.

Throbbing Las Vegas with its pulsing avenues lined with a crazy patchwork of tall towers fulfilling a thousand different fantasies is that illicit tryst in a luxury suite with hot tub and champagne overlooking mauve mountains and flaming sunsets, a wild place where strangers gather for martini’s and everyone is charismatic and energetic and trying to sell you something.

Little Shell Beach with its narrow streets lined with a crazy patchwork of beach houses fulfilling a thousand different fantasies is that calm and safe harbor where neighbors gather for a glass of wine to watch the golden sun set into the vast sapphire Pacific and no one locks their doors unless they go away.

Never get attached to anything in Las Vegas because what’s here today will soon be gone. It’s sole purpose for existence is change because entertainment demands a new thrill or the audience is bored. It’s just the nature of the place.

Change is slow and resisted in Shell Beach. People are attached to each other, to the old ways of classic California, to the sea otters and comorants. An ocean storm with waves rolling all the way from the Philippines never ceases to thrill an audience that is never bored. It’s just the Nature of the place.

I don’t want to choose. I want my safe husband and my thrilling lover. I want to be two women – I am two women. I finally get it. I finally understand how a man can intensely love his wife and family and desperately yearn for his mistress. And why men (and women – although far fewer) with money have always had both.

It’s always about the money, isn’t it?

Steele Cage Productions – Fireworks in the Cage

Hall of Fame Boxing Referee Richard Steele and Steve Oshins, both of Las Vegas and co-owners of Steele Cage Promotions, LLC (steelecage.com) and the International Fighting Organization, LLC (IFO), have teamed up to present Fireworks in the Cage: Mixed Martial Arts (MMA), a combination of different styles of fighting with a wide array of techniques drawing from multiple combat and boxing arts.

Left out of the official definition of MMA is the setting of a circular caged "ring", fenced with a chicken-wire type weave, with well padded edges and open only at the top. It’s a civilized version of the cages you see in a genre of film like "Escape from New York." Steele Cage produces a monthly TV show and weekly interviews @ 2 am early Sat mornings on Urban Lyrics TV – Channel 25 or Cable 14. Steele Cage/IFO commissioned Javier Voltaje to create their official theme song which he also recorded. Voltaje is a Cuban reggaeton star who wrote Cubajala, topping the charts in Europe. Reggaeton is a blend of Jamaican and Latin American sounds with rap and hip hop. The first evening of fighting was 7-7-7 at the Orleans Arena, Fireworks in the Cage II was Sep 01 at the Riviera, Version III back at the Orleans on Sep 21. Free BalloonaPalooza Festival

Kendo Pageant

Sat Aug 25 is a presentation by the Japanese American Cultural Society of “Kendo,” or “the way of the sword.” Kendo is the art of Japanese Samurai swordsmanship and one of the traditional Japanese martial arts. Pure Spanish Horse Show & Theatre

Black Powder Rifle and Pistol Shoot

And I hear complaints from people that there is nothing to do in Vegas unless you like gambling…..

If you are looking for something really different, try the Spring Mountain Free Trappers group which hosts a black powder muzzle loading rifle and pistol shoot twice a month in the summer and once a month in the winter.

Call to see if we are considered in winter now.

They also put on a knife and hawk (hatchett) throwing competition. I spoke with Dan (Buffalo Rump – see photo) and am assured all interested are welcome.

The firearms are replicas of traditional black powder weapons like Davy Crockett used, restricted to round ball only, 60 grain limit. Some of the 30-odd regulars make and sell leather clothing and are skilled at knife and hawk (hatchett) production. They can repair a gun and pride themselves on knowing the ways of the mountain men. You don’t have to have any firearms and you don’t have to compete.

They usually camp, are there all day Saturday and continue until about noon on Sunday. Some people drive up for the day in the RV’s, so roughing it is not required. The shoot takes place the 1st full weekend and 3rd weekend of the month during summer, the 1st weekend during winter. Most of the year the members meet at Lovell Canyon or CC Springs, on the way to Pahrump. The group summers at the Blue Tree Area in Lee’s Canyon (north on 95 towards Reno) from the first weekend in May. Buffalo Rump cautions that there is a small sign to indicate the turn.

The yearly Rendevzous is in the late fall at Spring Mt. Ranch State Park by Red Rock with about 250 people competing in rifle, pistol, smooth bore, hawk, knife, lance, archery, firestart, survival trek, competitions for kids and ladies and a dutch oven contest (that’s cooking.)

Third Thursday in Henderson

Perseids Meteor Shower Celestial Show

The Perseids (Meteor Shower) happen every year in August; this year the height of the show is Aug 12-13, luckily for excellent viewing, with a new moon. Peak viewing moment was supposed to be 11pm Sunday. The best viewing is in the desert where there is low light pollution to cloud the sight as well as very low humidity to reduce distortion in the atmosphere. Desert is something we certainly have plenty of in Las Vegas.

Caution: You have to drive very far from Vegas to get away from the light pollution. The display was disappointing last night from Bonnie Springs and the road to Pahrump. For best viewing, I think you should go north of the city, or east – and count on driving quite a few miles. The Sawmill Trailhead favored by the Astronomy Club is undoubtably the tried-and true destination.

What are meteor showers? By definition they are an increase in the number of meteors at a particular time of year.
“Comets shed the debris that becomes most meteor showers. As comets orbit the Sun, they shed an icy, dusty debris stream along the comet’s orbit. 2007 State Farm USA Basketball Challenge

Some of us are old enough to remember when a drive-in movie was the ideal date for a Saturday night. I blush to think of what went on the privacy of those cars. It was the place for teen-agers to be alone and for mom’s and dad’s to pack the kids in their pj’s and have a cheap night out. You can live that again, or for the first time with Las Vegas 5 Drive-In. Five Screens? – whoever thought of a multi-plex drive-in? I love it. This is real Americana.

NO Red White ‘n Boom draws comments

I am re-posting this article because there were several comments that could use more exposure. If you didn’t know, Clark County cancelled its annual Red White n’ Boom Fireworks display at Desert Breeze Park this year. They claimed that it was too expensive – I’m sure it does cost a fair share of the taxpayer’s money. But it might be interesting to take a vote, or at least a poll, to see how the citizenry feels about this latest budget cut. There were fireworks in North Vegas on July 3 and in Henderson and Summerlin on July 4. Summerlin was a concert event.

For those of you lucky enough to be in the right place at the right time July 4th, the fireworks display by the Las Vegas Country Club, followed by the Las Vegas Hilton were phenomenal. The Country Club is a private affair, with dinner tables and music by the clubhouse, but the display rises high up from the fairway and was well-visible if you were in the vicinity of Desert Inn & the Strip (Joe W Brown precisely). Those with east-facing rooms in the Wynn and Hilton surely had a treat.

They started promptly at 9pm and went on for more than 20 minutes with a splendid array of color, including marvelous white “spermy-like” spirals swimming their way across the night sky – a first time view for me at least. Although put on entirely for their own pleasure, I still appreciate the show which was 99% aerial – easily viewed by anyone in that part of town. The Hilton followed exactly on cue with their pyrotechnic show launched from the parking garage a block away, a shorter version but just as awesome and spectacular.

Unannounced officially, these two shows might have been more exciting because they were unexpected. I don’t know who makes the decisions about fireworks on the Strip – obviously for the hotels it is a business choice. There have been shows on the 4th in the past, but not last night, save for the Hilton. I do know that there must have been a few disappointed tourists, not to mention locals, who made their way out of the casinos to watch a show that didn’t happen.

I read that the Hilton Hotels have been sold for zillions of dollars cash – who knows what next year will bring? This can be a hard town to live in – it’s exciting and full of surprises, but those same qualities make it unpredictable and ephemeral. You think you might have the beginnings of a tradition, and poof! it’s gone in an instant. That goes for tall buildings to live jazz. If you’re not comfortable with constant change, you’re probably going to feel a bit lost and frustrated.

But this is Las Vegas – we’re supposed to do everything bigger and bolder and more over the top. At least there are a couple of groups that try to keep the standard.
