Here is a great event for family and kids of all ages. The BalloonaPalooza II, a 3 day hot air balloon festival, is Sep 21-23 with balloon glows, tethering and flights featuring some odd-shaped balloons. To accommodate the physically challenged, rides are available in a hot air balloon designed to board passengers using a wheel chair. Pure Spanish Horse Show & Theatre

The Foundation of the Pure Spanish Horse is presented Aug 29-Sep 02 at South Point Equestrian Event Center. Pure Spanish horses, known in Spain as the Pura Raza Española, are one of the rarest breeds in the US. Known the “Horse of Kings,” they are incredibly beautiful and good-natured with amazing athletic ability. To learn more about these regal animals, go to prehorse.org. Two evening shows of “Theatre of the Spanish Horse” at 7 pm Fri Aug 31 & 8 pm Sat Sept 01 feature world famous horse extremist, Tommie Turvey performing daring trick horse acts. With a billing of top national trainers and horses, look for other exciting performances including longlining (the horse is guided from the ground) and traditional Spanish riding disciplines. Black Powder Rifle and Pistol Shoot

And I hear complaints from people that there is nothing to do in Vegas unless you like gambling…..

If you are looking for something really different, try the Spring Mountain Free Trappers group which hosts a black powder muzzle loading rifle and pistol shoot twice a month in the summer and once a month in the winter.

Call to see if we are considered in winter now.

They also put on a knife and hawk (hatchett) throwing competition. I spoke with Dan (Buffalo Rump – see photo) and am assured all interested are welcome.

The firearms are replicas of traditional black powder weapons like Davy Crockett used, restricted to round ball only, 60 grain limit. Some of the 30-odd regulars make and sell leather clothing and are skilled at knife and hawk (hatchett) production. They can repair a gun and pride themselves on knowing the ways of the mountain men. You don’t have to have any firearms and you don’t have to compete.

They usually camp, are there all day Saturday and continue until about noon on Sunday. Some people drive up for the day in the RV’s, so roughing it is not required. The shoot takes place the 1st full weekend and 3rd weekend of the month during summer, the 1st weekend during winter. Most of the year the members meet at Lovell Canyon or CC Springs, on the way to Pahrump. The group summers at the Blue Tree Area in Lee’s Canyon (north on 95 towards Reno) from the first weekend in May. Buffalo Rump cautions that there is a small sign to indicate the turn.

The yearly Rendevzous is in the late fall at Spring Mt. Ranch State Park by Red Rock with about 250 people competing in rifle, pistol, smooth bore, hawk, knife, lance, archery, firestart, survival trek, competitions for kids and ladies and a dutch oven contest (that’s cooking.)

Perseids Meteor Shower Celestial Show

The Perseids (Meteor Shower) happen every year in August; this year the height of the show is Aug 12-13, luckily for excellent viewing, with a new moon. Peak viewing moment was supposed to be 11pm Sunday. The best viewing is in the desert where there is low light pollution to cloud the sight as well as very low humidity to reduce distortion in the atmosphere. Desert is something we certainly have plenty of in Las Vegas.

Caution: You have to drive very far from Vegas to get away from the light pollution. The display was disappointing last night from Bonnie Springs and the road to Pahrump. For best viewing, I think you should go north of the city, or east – and count on driving quite a few miles. The Sawmill Trailhead favored by the Astronomy Club is undoubtably the tried-and true destination.

What are meteor showers? By definition they are an increase in the number of meteors at a particular time of year.
“Comets shed the debris that becomes most meteor showers. As comets orbit the Sun, they shed an icy, dusty debris stream along the comet’s orbit. If Earth travels through this stream, we will see a meteor shower. Depending on where Earth and the stream meet, meteors appear to fall from a particular place in the sky, maybe within the neighborhood of a constellation.
Meteor showers are named by the constellation from which meteors appear to fall, a spot in the sky astronomers call the radiant. For instance, the radiant for the Leonid meteor shower is located in the constellation Leo. Some of us are old enough to remember when a drive-in movie was the ideal date for a Saturday night. I blush to think of what went on the privacy of those cars. It was the place for teen-agers to be alone and for mom’s and dad’s to pack the kids in their pj’s and have a cheap night out. The 4th of July celebration “Damboree” in Boulder City is an all day affair. Start with a Pancake Breakfast in Bicentennial Park at 7 am, and then watch the parade, complete with floats, along Nevada Way at 9 am. Spend the afternnon in Broadbent Park from 11 am with Damboree Ceremonies and Midway Booths. The day finishes at Veteran’s Memorial Park at 6 pm with festivities followed by the traditional fireworks display. Last Day for Pauite Elders Exhibit

If you are looking for an interesting day trip, don’t forget the drive to Overton and the Lost City Musuem. Besides the regular exhibit, they are featuring this special treatise of Pauite Elders. It took over five years to create this project with interviews and photographs of Southern Pauite Elders. The participants include the five bands of the Pauite Tribe of Utah, the Kaibab Tribe of AZ, the San Juan Tribe of UT, the Las Vegas, Moapa and Pahrump Tribes of NV and the Chemehuevi Tribe of CA. The display was created by writer Logan Hebner and photographer Michael Plyler and continues until the end of June.

A 4 hour drive from Las Vegas to Southern Utah is the site of the Panguitch Valley Balloon Rally and Hot Air Balloon Festival Jun 22-24. 30 balloons are scheduled to take off at 6:30 am each day with a balloon glow on Main Street at dusk on Saturday with a mass ascension on Sunday morning. The 7th annual Las Vegas Juneteenth Festival will be held June 15 & 16 from 4p-9p at Sammy Davis Jr. Plaza. Admission is free.

The American Bicycle Association (ABA) Las Vegas Nationals of Bicycle Motocross (BMX) are Jul 13 – 15 at the South Point Events Arena with free entry. BMX Racing is the newest event added to the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games. Top professional BMX riders from all over the world, as well as 3,000 top amateur will compete in the SouthWest Nationals with over 15,000 spectators. Look for USA’s Bubba Harris, current and 3 time ABA BMX PRO National Champion as well as the 2005 World Champion, and Alise Post current ABA BMX Woman’s PRO National Champion and 4 time ABA BMX Amateur Girls National Champion.

This is a great family sport with both male & female competitors in age ranges from 5 & under to the 56 & over cruiser class. The dirt course measures 1,100 feet with massive jumps of all shapes and sizes.

Jun 8-10 was the grand opening weekend of the Springs Preserve, a multi-sensory nature and historical experience park with outdoor concerts, museums, restored environments, nature walks and other exhibits designed to educate on the human and natural culture of the Las Vegas Valley. The springs area was home to native Americans thousands of years before the Spanish arrived to name the area “las vegas” or “the meadows.”

Several “experiences” are listed as attractions: The ORIGEN Experience, the Desert Living Center, Gardens/Trails and a beautiful new Nevada State Museum scheduled to open in 2008.

ORIGEN captures the human story from early inhabitants to the possibilities of the future, a story told in 3 interactive exhibits progressing from long ago yesterdays to not-so-distant tomorrows.

Desert Living Center (DLC) is called the “green” jewel in the crown of the preserve. Buildings are the first LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) structures in Nevada. The purpose of the the DLC is to educate on environmentally sound protection of resources without sacrificing quality of life.

Gardens and Trails consist of 4 themed walking trails bordering the cienaga (wetlands) plant, bird and animal sanctuary and an 8 acre Botanical Gardens with a range of desert landscapes and hands-on activities. You’ll also find a children’s theatre, a weather station, a kitchen area for outdoor cooking classes and an Enabling Garden for those with physical challenges.

Hours for the preserve will be 10a-10p during summer and 10a-6p during winter. Prices for tickets vary according to exhibit access, age and residence (for example: NV adult $14.95, NV child $6.95). Zion Canyon Art & Flute Festival

The 3rd Annual Zion Canyon Art & Flute Festival is a world event. Starting at 9:30a on Fri June 8 and continuing the weekend til 5pm on Sun Jun 10, enthusiasts and friends of the Native American Flute gather in Springdale Utah for workshops, concerts and sharing of the passion for this special art form.

Evening concerts on Fri & Sat begin at 6:30p and end at about 10p. The cost of admission to the Festival is only $2 pp or $5 the weekend. Children under 12 are free. Workshops are sometimes free; when there is a charge the fees range from $10-$40. Concerts are $20 per evening or $35 for both.
