There are numerous free (or cheap) film events happening around town, some geared to children, some to families and some to adults. Many are summer outdoor events, held in the evening and encourage family fun like picnics and lolling around on blankets on the grass. Others are year round, held in the comfort of air-conditioned libraries or community centers.

Safe Nest is a refuge for the abused

Safe Nest is a non-profit organization dedicated to helping victims of domestic violence. Forms of violence can be physical, sexual, emotional or verbal. It can involve the destruction of property, the abuse of pets and animals, social isolation and economic dependency. Thurs Jun 28 are two performances 11am & 1pm by the Cirque du Soleil for the Young People’s Summer Concert, an opportunity for some of the Cirque artists to volunteer their draft to the community. This show is part of the Winchester Summer Concert Series and will display the dance, acrobatic and musical talents of employees of the world reknown Cirque du Soleil. Winchester Theater Boot Camp

Founded by Broadway performer Susan Swanson, the Winchester Players are an amateur theater group spanning all ages centered in the Winchester Cultural Center. This summer is the second Winchester Theater Boot Camp for youth ages 5-18 who have the serious desire to hone their skills in drama, voice and dance. The camp is from Mon-Fri, all day for two months, so it is definitely not for the dilletante. The summer camp will present a pirate-based musical written by Swanson at the Winchester Cultural Center in August. Classes are extremely reasonable in cost (about $2/day). Boulder Heritage Days

Chef’s for Kids Gala Success

Last night at the Rio Brasilia Ballroom epitomized the glitz and glamour of Las Vegas of your fantasy. Thousands and thousands of roses nested in Liberace-style candelabras graced the circular tables draped in crushed red velvet. “Everything’s coming up roses” was the theme and certainly there was a bumper crop – but more of green ($) than red. Raffles and silent and live auctions offered gourmet dinners and spa weekends – some prizes tintillating elegant dinners for multiple guests served by top chefs in your own home. Larry Hart’s Botannica did the decor and floral displays with marvelous theatrical aplomb, succeeding in balancing extravagence with good taste. Grammy winner Hart also sang. Is there no end to talent in some people?

Chefs for Kids is a non profit supported by the Fraternity of Executive Chefs of Las Vegas with the lofty goal of eliminating malnutrition and hunger through education and awareness. Working with nutritionists from the University of Nevada Cooperative Extension, the Program teaches young grade schoolers about healthy food combinations and making the right choices for their bodies. Last night’s gala event certainly added fuel to the Program with just one live auction gourmet dinner going for $18,000. Now there’s somebody willing to put his money where his mouth is!

Here’s your chance to say thank you to law enforcement and the good work they do for the community. This event is for kids from shelters who have been dealt a pretty lousy hand in life – certainly far more unfortunate than 99.9% of you who are reading this. Pony up and give – either out of your wallet or your clock – from your heart!

Who says cops don’t have a heart? This annual Spring Fair is put on by the Nevada Conference of Police and Sheriffs to help sponsor a few kids from Clark County Youth Services that have had a life too hard for most of us to imagine. Helping them “achieve Respect, Love and Human Values” is the goal of the Nevada C.O.P.S. and these youngsters come to the Spring Fair and enjoy refreshments, games and entertainment supplied by contributions from the community. The fair is a special treat for the kids; they get to interact with police officers in a fun way. In fact, it’s a way for all of us to get to know law enforcement as real people who care about our city. McGruff the crime-fighting dog will be on site to make a special presentation.

The Nevada C.O.P.S. are asking for your financial support to make this day an even bigger success than last year. There are many upfront costs, so the earlier you make your donation, the better the party for the kids (of all ages.)

Origin of Mother’s Day

Ever wonder how we got started with Mother’s Day? Cynics believe it is a huge conspiracy started by Hallmark to promote additional sales of greeting cards, a movement quickly reinforced by the chocolate and florist industires. But truth is, although there has been collosal commercial advantage to the holiday, it has its roots in the efforts of Julia Ward Howe who wrote the Mother’s Day Proclamation in 1870 to unite women against war. She copied the idea from the Brits who held a similar vision of womanhood and peace. But today even the UK uses their special day to thank their moms for being moms.

Howe never succeeded in getting formal recognition for a Mother’s Day for Peace and her movement coalesced with that of Ann Jarvis, who had attempted Mother’s Work Days in 1858 to improve sanitation. Her daughter Anna Jarvis started the actual crusade for a memorial day for women, the first being celebrated in Grafton, West Virginia on May 10, 1908. The holiday was declared official in some states in 1912 and nationally by Pres. Woodrow Wilson in 1912, following the original concept of peace by naming it a day for citizens to fly the flag in honor of mothers who had lost sons in war. It only took nine years before the commercialization of the holiday caused Anna Jarvis to become a fervent opponent.

Mother’s Day is the number one day to dine out. Champagne brunches, massive buffets, elegant menus – just about every restaurant in town has got something going for Sunday, May 13. Give your mom a great big hug and tell her “you love her” and appreciate all that she has done for you – along with a bouquet of flowers, a box of chocolates and a work-free day, of course!

Dragon Boat Festival

In the beautiful setting of Lake Las Vegas, 44 foot, teak Chinese war canoes will compete in three 500-meter race heats on Sat May 5, starting at 10am. Each canoe has a 22-person crew with 20 paddlers, a drummer and a steerman. Teams come from US and Canada to compete.

Ceremonies will start at MonteLago Village on Fri May 4 @ 6:30pm with the “Dotting of the Eye Ceremony,” a tradition which awakens the Dragon spirit. Enjoy a performance of the Shaolin dancers followed by a screening of “South Pacific” on the Events Plaza.

This is the 5th Annual Tastes & Tunes Festival May 4-5 with free admission. The Mexican Village will showcase Cinco de Mayo festivities with vendors and live Latino music on the Findlay Toyota Fiesta Stage.

The Clark Co. Museum is offering a series of Native American programs at the Museum in Henderson, with a discussion of local ethnobotany scheduled for Sat Apr 28. “Pauite” (sometimes Piute) refers to a group of North American Indians, divided into Northern and Southern. This grouping is not really correct, as the Northern Pauites are more related to the Shoshone and the Southerns to the Ute. It was the Southern Pauites who lived in this area, today with communities in Las Vegas, Pahrump and Moapa. Ethnobotany is simply the cultural uses of plants, the study of how peoples of a culture or region use indigenous plants, whether for food, shelter, medicine, clothing, hunting or religious rituals.

2007 Writer’s Conference

The 2007 Las Vegas Writer’s Conference will be held Apr 19-22. The Henderson Writer’s Group sponsors the event with workshops, seminars and panels including authors, agents and publishing experts. The Rainbow Company Theater Group is auditioning Sat Apr 21 for their production of “The Land of the Dragon,” a Chinese story first published in 1946. Created in fluid Chinese style with loads of intrigue and, of course, dragons, the actual production debuts beginning of June. Roles are available for ages 12 to adult. Anyone may audition in that age range, no experience required and no prepared material. Dress comfortably and come for an afternoon of improvisation and movement. Lawry’s Hosts Benefit for Rainbow Company

The Rainbow Company has terrific programs that expose children and youth through high school to drama, by giving the opportunity not only to view live theatre, but to participate in the production. It is run by the City of Las Vegas and has been honored with national awards for youth theatre. Its core is The Ensemble, a group of 40 children, ages 10-18, selected through audtion.

The Rainbow Company will give a benefit performance of “Trails of Old Nevada” with a “lot of music” at Lawry’s Prime Rib Sun Mar 18. You are invited to the silent auction starting at 3:30 pm. The prime rib at Lawry’s is famous and the dinner will finish with a special chocolate dessert. Tickets are $85, all the proceeds go to the Friends of Rainbow Company. UNLV Summer School

I just received the course catalogue for the UNLV summer term. Summer term is actually composed of three different sessions: Session 1, 3 weeks, May 14- Jun 1; Session 2, 5 weeks, Jun 4- Jul 6; Session 3, 5 weeks, Jul 9- Aug 10. As usual there are some great opportunities to enrich your mind and pursue some areas of interest, covering the material fairly rapidly.

I see that the Film Department is offering “Major Figures of the Cinema: James Bond” in Session 2 and “Major Figures of the Cinema: Clint Eastwood” in Session 3. I audited the Clint Eastwood course a couple of summers ago and enjoyed 3 evenings a week watching and discussing Eastwood films spanning his entire career, acting and directing, from spaghetti westerns to Million Dollar Baby. What a joy! Those classes are held in the evening, so you don’t have to be retired to take advantage.

Although the classes are certainly more academic than the more practical courses offered through the UNLV Educational Outreach Program, there are definitely some interesting selections, including Spanish, Japanese, Italian, Hatha Yoga, Tae Kwan Do, History of Rock Music, Survey of Afro-American Dance and US Military History since 1900.
