Last night at the Rio Brasilia Ballroom epitomized the glitz and glamour of Las Vegas of your fantasy. Thousands and thousands of roses nested in Liberace-style candelabras graced the circular tables draped in crushed red velvet. “Everything’s coming up roses” was the theme and certainly there was a bumper crop – but more of green ($) than red. Raffles and silent and live auctions offered gourmet dinners and spa weekends – some prizes tintillating elegant dinners for multiple guests served by top chefs in your own home. Larry Hart’s Botannica did the decor and floral displays with marvelous theatrical aplomb, succeeding in balancing extravagence with good taste. Grammy winner Hart also sang. Is there no end to talent in some people?

Chefs for Kids is a non profit supported by the Fraternity of Executive Chefs of Las Vegas with the lofty goal of eliminating malnutrition and hunger through education and awareness. Working with nutritionists from the University of Nevada Cooperative Extension, the Program teaches young grade schoolers about healthy food combinations and making the right choices for their bodies. Last night’s gala event certainly added fuel to the Program with just one live auction gourmet dinner going for $18,000. Now there’s somebody willing to put his money where his mouth is!

Here’s your chance to say thank you to law enforcement and the good work they do for the community. This event is for kids from shelters who have been dealt a pretty lousy hand in life – certainly far more unfortunate than 99.9% of you who are reading this. Pony up and give – either out of your wallet or your clock – from your heart!

Who says cops don’t have a heart? This annual Spring Fair is put on by the Nevada Conference of Police and Sheriffs to help sponsor a few kids from Clark County Youth Services that have had a life too hard for most of us to imagine. Helping them “achieve Respect, Love and Human Values” is the goal of the Nevada C.O.P.S. and these youngsters come to the Spring Fair and enjoy refreshments, games and entertainment supplied by contributions from the community. The fair is a special treat for the kids; they get to interact with police officers in a fun way. In fact, it’s a way for all of us to get to know law enforcement as real people who care about our city. McGruff the crime-fighting dog will be on site to make a special presentation.

The Nevada C.O.P.S. are asking for your financial support to make this day an even bigger success than last year. There are many upfront costs, so the earlier you make your donation, the better the party for the kids (of all ages.)

Artist Tsui @ The Gallery at Summerlin

If you want to see some marvelous paintings by a Chinese artist with 20 years of New York art scene in his work, and meet the artist himself, be at the Gallery at Summerlin Fri May 11 from 6p-9p. George Tsui relocated to Beijing in 1996 to begin “a creative journey into China.” That journey produced a series of works titled “Fair Ladies of the Past,” and showcases Chinese women in the splendor of imperial China. The artist’s “duel technique of painting and sculpture is traditionally ornate yet abstract in the most modern sense.” It is also incredibly beautiful judging by the piece in the promotional materials.

The event is a fundraiser for the Nevada Cancer Institute which will recieve a portion of the proceeds of the Gallery’s sale of Tsui’s art work. In addition, Collectors Editions, the publisher for Tsui, will also donate a portion of sales proceeds to NCI.

Work available for purchase includes oils embellished with antique wood details, unornamented oil paintings, giclees and oil sketches. A giclee is a high resolution reproduction of two-dimensional artwork, utilizing digital scans and special large format printers. They can be printed on a variety of media including canvas, vinyl and transparent acetates. This is a technology vastly superior to traditional lithography both in terms of vividness and longevity of color as well as crispness of detail.

Dragon Boat Festival

In the beautiful setting of Lake Las Vegas, 44 foot, teak Chinese war canoes will compete in three 500-meter race heats on Sat May 5, starting at 10am. Each canoe has a 22-person crew with 20 paddlers, a drummer and a steerman. Teams come from US and Canada to compete.

1st Annual “Legends of Jazz” Conversation

Joanne Gilbert is the queen of Las Vegas jazz and she has dedicated an enormous amount of energy and love to promote the wonderful talent we have in this city. Her latest promotion is the first “Legends of Jazz” conversation to be held at the Doc Rando Hall, Ham Fine Arts Bldg UNLV campus. The featured jazzmasters are Gerald Wilson and Jimmy Wilkins with Tom Hall as moderator. Sat Mar 31 from noon-1:00 pm. This is a free event open to the public. My suggestion is to park in the parking structure behind the Fine Arts complex, access from Maryland Pkwy.

Immediately following the “conversation” is the 2nd Annual “This Great Day in Las Vegas!” musician group photo-shoot. The photo will be taken on the steps behind Ham Hall. Musicians ONLY please for the photo, but we jazz lovers can watch and enjoy. Widows of musicians (and I’ll assume widowers as well) are invited to participate and welcomed to bring 8×10 pix of their spouses. Lawry’s Hosts Benefit for Rainbow Company

The Rainbow Company has terrific programs that expose children and youth through high school to drama, by giving the opportunity not only to view live theatre, but to participate in the production. It is run by the City of Las Vegas and has been honored with national awards for youth theatre. Its core is The Ensemble, a group of 40 children, ages 10-18, selected through audtion.

The Rainbow Company will give a benefit performance of “Trails of Old Nevada” with a “lot of music” at Lawry’s Prime Rib Sun Mar 18. You are invited to the silent auction starting at 3:30 pm. The prime rib at Lawry’s is famous and the dinner will finish with a special chocolate dessert. Tickets are $85, all the proceeds go to the Friends of Rainbow Company. Nevada Arts Advocates Gala

Dust off your tux, polish your shoes, put on your sparkles and get out your checkbook to support the arts. The Nevada Arts Advocates (NAA) is hosting a dinner gala to honor its awardees who have significantly contributed to the appreciation of the arts in our community. Slated to be honored are State Sen Raggio, Mayor Goodman, Wells Fargo, the Reno Gazette-Journal and Public Radio KNPR FM 88.9. It should be a dazzling affair with silent auction beginning at 7:00 pm to benefit the NAA. Spring White Elephant Sale

The Woman’s Auxiliary of the Salvation Army, known as SAWA, will be holding their Spring White Elephant Sale as a fundraiser for the Salvation Army. This is a great event for treasure hunters, garage sale afficionados, and haunters of swap meets. Typical items for sale are custom jewlery, books, household items, and of course, “knick-kncks,” that great catch-all name for those items you don’t need, but can’t resist. Coffee and rolls will be served for $1. Join SAWA on Sat Mar 24 8a-noon at the Salvation Army Corps Bldg. and help support one of the best charitable organizations around. Jazz & Wine Tasting Scholarship Fundraiser

You enjoy jazz, you enjoy wine and have been known to sample a good Scotch now and then. This Saturday is the perfect occasion to indulge yourself and support a good cause. The Cultural Diversity Foundation is holding its 12th annual Educational Taste of Excellence: Wine-tasting, Spirits, and Jazz Scholarship Fundraiser on Sat Mar 10.

You’ll find the Vista Ballroom full of enthusiastic volunteers and performers mixing with 700-1000 good folk out to enjoy the music, sample the food and participate in the silent auction. The Foundation awards education grants to students from a variety of community college campuses, including Henderson, Cheyenne, Charleston and others. It’s almost impossible to pick up any publication today and not read about Global Warming. Even the Academy Awards used not-so-subliminal messages to communicate “we need to act now,” a mantra being promoted across all media. Our local Sheila Z. Stirling, author and head of the Open Wisdom Institute, is organizing a Climate Project consisting of ten presentations throughout the year. Sheila was one of 1000 people hand chosen to be trained personally in Nashville by Vice President Al Gore as part of his creation “The Climate Project.” The criteria for the project are: minimum ten presentations throughout the year for which there may be NO charge. Travel, housing and equipment expenses may be sponsored personally, by organizations or businesses. Sheila is actively seeking presentation sponsors and general support. I intend to celebrate the arrival of the Golden Red Pig Chinese New Year at the 1st Annual Asian Food Festival. Yummy yummy! Don’t you just love Vegas? While most of the world is deciding what show they’re going to watch on TV Thursday night, we are making tough decisions about what event we’re going to attend. Kiss My Palate Celebrity Couple Cookoff certainly grabbed my attention. You’ve got Celebrity Couples in cook-off while local Celebrity Chefs judge the competition and provide their signature appetizers for lookers-on. It’s Thursday Feb 8, 6-9 pm at the Stan Fulton Bldg. This is a fundraiser for Project Shero and the cost is $50/pp prepaid or $65 at the door. The evening will be emceed by Guy Fieri, winner of “The Next Food Network Star.” The money goes to the Boys & Girls Club, so it’s good fun and good food for a good cause. 801 E.
