Free BalloonaPalooza Festival

Here is a great event for family and kids of all ages. The BalloonaPalooza II, a 3 day hot air balloon festival, is Sep 21-23 with balloon glows, tethering and flights featuring some odd-shaped balloons. To accommodate the physically challenged, rides are available in a hot air balloon designed to board passengers using a wheel chair. The festival will feature an interactive balloon tent with a walk-in balloon the public can explore. And if that isn’t enough entertainment, look for a full-sized carnival, a circus, food and craft vendors, entertainers on two stages and a fireworks display. Venue is Craig Ranch Regional Park 780 W. For all of you out there in Vegas Valley who feel you live in an intellectual, as well as geographical desert, relief is on the horizon. And this oasis is not a mirage.

After a long hot summer with little to stimulate the mind except the the Las Vegas World Affairs Club, some excellent films at CineVegas, various poetry readings, the Socrates Discussion Group and well actually, quite a few other places if you read my articles – UNLV has announced its fall 2007 schedule for the University Forum Free Lecture Series open to the public.

You can check out details at liberalarts.unlv.edu or call 702- 895-3401. Please note that the lecture series is only for fall and spring semester. Fall semester is not posted until late summer, so the site may say “I’m sorry, there are no upcoming events.” We hope that this series will survive the deep budget cuts in the Nevada university system.

The University Forum is a lecture series sponsored and funded by UNLV’s College of Liberal Arts for the edification of the Las Vegas community. All events are free and open to the public, no reservation is necessary – just show up and enjoy. Lectures start at 7:30 pm sharp. Venue is the Barrick Museum Auditorium, UNLV campus, Las Vegas NV.

Anime Vegas

The existence of anime clubs is a really interesting phenomena. I have watched a fair share of the Japanese cartoons (animation) and it just doesn’t strike a cord with me. But the world-wide appeal among a very select segment of the population is undeniable. These are a dedicated lot and they have a group here that meets on the 2nd Saturday for a marathon viewing from 10:30a-4:30p. They show chapters from several series and caution that some of the cartoons are not suitable for children. Admission is Free. 3 Different UNLV Lecture Series Free to Public

UNLV offers three lecture or discussion series free to the general public.

The University Forum Lecture Series features speakers on a variety of subjects which run the gamut from "Climate History of the Earth", "The Mystery of Labryrinths," "Screening the Mafia" to "Time-Loops, Superstrings, and Other Weird Stuff."

You will find something for every taste and every interest. The Forum Lecture Series is offered two to four times a month, at 7:30 pm, at the Barrick Museum Auditorium. You can check the UNLV website for full details: liberalarts.unlv.edu. (Pls note that the site may state "I’m sorry, there are no upcoming events." The fall semester schedule is not posted until late summer. The program is not expected to be cut in spite of the deep budget cuts for 2009-2010.)

The Barrick Lecture Series, funded through a grant by Marjorie Barrick, presents nationally and internationally known speakers and are often presented in round table discussion format. Two or three events are scheduled annually, usually commencing at 7:30 pm. The Barrick Lecture Series is held at the Artemus W. Ham Concert Hall at UNLV.

The Black Mountain Institute is a think tank for writers and artists founded under the vision of Carol Harter, former UNLV President. The BMI is composed of the Forum on Contemporary Cultures (BMI), the Cities of Asylum and the International Institute of Modern Letters. Its mission is to bring together thinkers from all cultural and political perspectives.

All three of the UNLV Lecture Series are open and free to the public. The University Forum Lecture Series and the Black Mountain Institute require no reservations, while the Barrick Lecture Series requires advance acquisition of free tickets with limitation of two per person.

Pure Spanish horses, known in Spain as the Pura Raza Española, are one of the rarest breeds in the US. Known the “Horse of Kings,” they are incredibly beautiful and good-natured with amazing athletic ability. To learn more about these regal animals, go to prehorse.org. Two evening shows of “Theatre of the Spanish Horse” at 7 pm Fri Aug 31 & 8 pm Sat Sept 01 feature world famous horse extremist, Tommie Turvey performing daring trick horse acts. With a billing of top national trainers and horses, look for other exciting performances including longlining (the horse is guided from the ground) and traditional Spanish riding disciplines. This is a benefit for non-profit The Foundation for the Pure Spanish Horse. Tickets: General $25/ VIP $75. Children under 13 are admitted free.

Black Powder Rifle and Pistol Shoot

And I hear complaints from people that there is nothing to do in Vegas unless you like gambling…..

If you are looking for something really different, try the Spring Mountain Free Trappers group which hosts a black powder muzzle loading rifle and pistol shoot twice a month in the summer and once a month in the winter.

They also put on a knife and hawk (hatchett) throwing competition. I spoke with Dan (Buffalo Rump – see photo) and am assured all interested are welcome.

The firearms are replicas of traditional black powder weapons like Davy Crockett used, restricted to round ball only, 60 grain limit. Some of the 30-odd regulars make and sell leather clothing and are skilled at knife and hawk (hatchett) production. They can repair a gun and pride themselves on knowing the ways of the mountain men. You don’t have to have any firearms and you don’t have to compete.

They usually camp, are there all day Saturday and continue until about noon on Sunday. Some people drive up for the day in the RV’s, so roughing it is not required. The shoot takes place the 1st full weekend and 3rd weekend of the month during summer, the 1st weekend during winter. Most of the year the members meet at Lovell Canyon or CC Springs, on the way to Pahrump. The group summers at the Blue Tree Area in Lee’s Canyon (north on 95 towards Reno) from the first weekend in May. Buffalo Rump cautions that there is a small sign to indicate the turn.

The yearly Rendevzous is in the late fall at Spring Mt. Ranch State Park by Red Rock with about 250 people competing in rifle, pistol, smooth bore, hawk, knife, lance, archery, firestart, survival trek, competitions for kids and ladies and a dutch oven contest (that’s cooking.)
