Here is a great event for family and kids of all ages. The BalloonaPalooza II, a 3 day hot air balloon festival, is Sep 21-23 with balloon glows, tethering and flights featuring some odd-shaped balloons. To accommodate the physically challenged, rides are available in a hot air balloon designed to board passengers using a wheel chair. The festival will feature an interactive balloon tent with a walk-in balloon the public can explore. And if that isn’t enough entertainment, look for a full-sized carnival, a circus, food and craft vendors, entertainers on two stages and a fireworks display. Venue is Craig Ranch Regional Park 780 W. Stars on the Lake Concert w/ Kenny G

The Stars on the Lake Series at the MonteLago Village Waterfront features Kenny G with a Fireworks display after the show. The event is outdoors, regardless of weather, with the performers on the floating stage at Lake Las Vegas. The show starts at 8pm, gates open 6pm. No coolers or chairs, just small blankets. The restaurants in the Village offer specials and vendors have food & beverages.

NO Red White ‘n Boom draws comments

I am re-posting this article because there were several comments that could use more exposure. If you didn’t know, Clark County cancelled its annual Red White n’ Boom Fireworks display at Desert Breeze Park this year. They claimed that it was too expensive – I’m sure it does cost a fair share of the taxpayer’s money. But it might be interesting to take a vote, or at least a poll, to see how the citizenry feels about this latest budget cut. There were fireworks in North Vegas on July 3 and in Henderson and Summerlin on July 4. Summerlin was a concert event.

LV51 vs Fresno with Fireworks

Jun 30 the 51’s will host the Fresno Grizzlies, a AAA affiliate of the SF Giants. Bonus for this home game is a “Fireworks Extravanganza” in celebration of Independence Day. Fans can also play Cox Communications Baseball Bingo. Tickets are $13 and can be purchased online at tickemaster.com. Children 3 and under are free if sitting on parents’ lap. For those of you lucky enough to be in the right place at the right time July 4th, the fireworks display by the Las Vegas Country Club, followed by the Las Vegas Hilton were phenomenal. The Country Club is a private affair, with dinner tables and music by the clubhouse, but the display rises high up from the fairway and was well-visible if you were in the vicinity of Desert Inn & the Strip (Joe W Brown precisely). Those with east-facing rooms in the Wynn and Hilton surely had a treat.

They started promptly at 9pm and went on for more than 20 minutes with a splendid array of color, including marvelous white “spermy-like” spirals swimming their way across the night sky – a first time view for me at least. Although put on entirely for their own pleasure, I still appreciate the show which was 99% aerial – easily viewed by anyone in that part of town. The Hilton followed exactly on cue with their pyrotechnic show launched from the parking garage a block away, a shorter version but just as awesome and spectacular.

Unannounced officially, these two shows might have been more exciting because they were unexpected. I don’t know who makes the decisions about fireworks on the Strip – obviously for the hotels it is a business choice. There have been shows on the 4th in the past, but not last night, save for the Hilton. I do know that there must have been a few disappointed tourists, not to mention locals, who made their way out of the casinos to watch a show that didn’t happen.

I read that the Hilton Hotels have been sold for zillions of dollars cash – who knows what next year will bring? This can be a hard town to live in – it’s exciting and full of surprises, but those same qualities make it unpredictable and ephemeral. You think you might have the beginnings of a tradition, and poof! it’s gone in an instant. That goes for tall buildings to live jazz. If you’re not comfortable with constant change, you’re probably going to feel a bit lost and frustrated.

But this is Las Vegas – we’re supposed to do everything bigger and bolder and more over the top. At least there are a couple of groups that try to keep the standard.

LV Philharmonic with Fireworks

Jul 4 starting 8pm is the Fourth of July Las Vegas Philharmonic Concert in Hills Park, Summerlin. The new Music Director David Itkin will lead the orchestra in patriotic tunes and marches. The finale will be the Overture from “1812” with fireworks by Zambelli Internationale. Advance tickets: adult $25/children 6-12 $20/children under 5 free. The 4th of July celebration “Damboree” in Boulder City is an all day affair. Start with a Pancake Breakfast in Bicentennial Park at 7 am, and then watch the parade, complete with floats, along Nevada Way at 9 am. Spend the afternnon in Broadbent Park from 11 am with Damboree Ceremonies and Midway Booths. The day finishes at Veteran’s Memorial Park at 6 pm with festivities followed by the traditional fireworks display. This is the 59th Annual Damboree – an old-fashioned style 4th of July with bands, parades, politicians and fireworks.

Free Henderson Concerts w/ Fireworks

Paul Taylor Jazz will entertain Jul 4 7:30pm-9pm at the Plaza stage in Henderson with sponsorship of Smooth Jazz 105.7. Walt Boenig will perform from 6:30pm-7:15pm at the Justice Court stage with the Henderson Civic Orchestra from 7:45pm-8:45pm. Randy Anderson will be on the Convention Center front lawn stage, with “line dancing” by Birdie Bridges on Atlantic Ave.

The Fourth of July celebration runs from 6:00pm to the dazzling fireworks display at approximately 9:00 pm from the top of City Hall.

Look for sand sculpture created by local artist Steven Liguori. Vendors will be selling food and beverages. It’s a great family outing with a list of children’s activites ($10 fee gives unlimited access):
