Here is a great event for family and kids of all ages. The BalloonaPalooza II, a 3 day hot air balloon festival, is Sep 21-23 with balloon glows, tethering and flights featuring some odd-shaped balloons. To accommodate the physically challenged, rides are available in a hot air balloon designed to board passengers using a wheel chair. The festival will feature an interactive balloon tent with a walk-in balloon the public can explore. And if that isn’t enough entertainment, look for a full-sized carnival, a circus, food and craft vendors, entertainers on two stages and a fireworks display. Venue is Craig Ranch Regional Park 780 W. Screening of Local Filmmakers

Winchester Cultural Center will present the Featuring Local Independent Cinema (FLIC) program monthly, usually the last Sunday of the month @ 2pm. Caution: Times and days of the week can change. Full-length and short films produced by local filmmakers will rotate every other month. Viewings will be followed by a discussion hour. Tickets $3.

Submissions of film, digital or video are now being accepted on DVD. The entries will be screened and selected by a judging committee, reserving the right to select films suitable for viewing by either mature or general audiences. Non-English language entries must be sub-titled.

The Halloween Rock Festival with a hip-hop edge shakes the Vegas music scene again this October at UNLV. “Rock the Bells” Hip Hop in CA

If you want to catch the North American Festival Series “Rock the Bells Festival“, the closest venues are San Bernadino and San Francisco, California of course. Presented by Guerilla Union, Rage Against the Machine and Wu-Tang headline at both events, with Cypress Hill + The Roots and Public Enemy. The hip hop festival at the NOS Events Center in San Bernadino is Sat Aug 11, gates opening at 11 am. San Francisco gates open at noon on Aug 18 at McCovey Cove Parking Lot (south of AT&T Park). Public Enemy were pioneers in the rap world with their political, social and cultural consciousness. They were the first rap group to make it big worldwide and one of the first musical groups to release their songs on MP3, a totally innovative technology at the time. A tour de force of the 1980’s, they have been making music since 1982.

Rage Against the Machine (Rage or RATM) blends hip hop, hard rock, punk and funk. They make no secret of their political convictions. They split up in 2000 and played again for the first time at Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in April 2007.

Panquitch Valley Hot Air Balloon Festival

A 4 hour drive from Las Vegas to Southern Utah is the site of the Panguitch Valley Balloon Rally and Hot Air Balloon Festival Jun 22-24. 30 balloons are scheduled to take off at 6:30 am each day with a balloon glow on Main Street at dusk on Saturday with a mass ascension on Sunday morning. CineVegas Final Results

The 9th Annual CineVegas Film Festival is over. What a whirlwind, wonderful experience! I’m almost afraid to promote the event for fear of it losing its intimacy and accessibility from too much success. Here is a film festival that still has plenty of room for public access, yet has evolved into a professional, well-run event attracting quality films and even a few stars.

The red carpet part is what interests me least, but the presence of Ben Kingsley and Anthony Hopkins certainly lend a gravitas that puts festivals on the map. And of course, we don’t want to forget that the 9th Annual CineVegas started out with the world premiere of Ocean’s Thirteen, certainly not an independent film, but a red carpet event that sizzled with the star power of George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Matt Damon and the rest of the new Rat Pack.

The Festival offered 40+ films with eight series of shorts films in 9 1/2 days. The problem was seeing as many films as possible and still maintaining a semblance of another life. I met one loyal fan who has been attending the Festival all nine years since infancy when there were actually two festivals in town, one non-profit and one commercial, neither one called CineVegas. He literally takes CineVegas as his summer vacation and had seen over 30 screenings. Even as a full-time participant, conflicts in film schedules, which usually screen 1-2 times during the Festival, prevent you from viewing everything. Choices, choices, choices.

I personally experienced 15 films, a variety of shorts and a couple of documentaries: Mexican, Malaysian, Asian-American, French, films set in Africa, Kuala Lumpur, Mexico City, Paris, New York, LA, the desert outside Las Vegas.

Free Juneteenth Festival

The 7th annual Las Vegas Juneteenth Festival will be held June 15 & 16 from 4p-9p at Sammy Davis Jr. Plaza. Admission is free.

Look for educational activities, guest speakers, live entertainment, and food and beverages. R&B singer Howard Hewitt will be the headliner Friday night, with R&B soul legend Freddie Jackson Saturday night. Stand-up comedian LJ Brown is MC, with introduction by George Wallace. Proceeds go to benefit the Anthony L. Pollard Foundation to provide educational assistance and opportunities to community youth.

June 19, 1865 was the date Union soldiers landed in Galveston, Texas with news that the Civil War had ended and all slaves were free. The Juneteenth Festival commemorates the observance of June 19 as African-American Emancipation Day.

Update on CineVegas (La Proxima Ola)

I’ve viewed five films so far at the 2007 CineVegas Film Festival happening at Brendan Theatres at the Palms, and have been concentrating on films by directors making their debuts with either first or second releases, especially foreign language. Part of the mission of CineVegas is to provide the opportunity to experience film you would not otherwise see in Las Vegas (or few other American venues.) The films are open to the public. More info is at the website listed at the end of this article.

“I Don’t Want to Sleep Alone” is set in Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia) and directed by Tsai Ming-Liang. I must give this a mixed review in that the story of a mattress, two men and two women and the noisy, sweaty, gritty backstreets of Kuala Lumpur is intriguing to a point. But it shifts abruptly and uncomfortably at the end of the film from stark realism to misty surrealism. Acting is suberb. As a speedy Westerner you find yourself slowly winding down to the pace of the sultry tropics. Others might find the realism appealing, but personally, I don’t enjoy watching a film that focuses so much on bodily functions. Original version with English subtitles.

“Viva” by Director Anna Biller (who also starred) was set in the swinging 70’s when nudism and free love were synonomous with California. Once you get past the fun part of totally 70’s decor, dress and all the kitsch of the era, the film is just plain silly. Billed as a tribute to vintage sexploitation films, I felt a bit exploited as audience. Cast and Director present for Q&A. American.

The Festival is also introducing “La Proxima Ola” (The Next Wave), films by the new cinema mexicana which hold promise for a fascinating surrealist expression particular to the Spanish mind. Some of the films were more successful than others, all have been technically excellent with a remarkable authenticity both in acting and art direction.

“Once Upon a Time Maria” (Eros Una Vez Maria) is by first time feature film director Jesus Magana Vazquez. It is a stream of consciousness erotic saga that moves from fragmented memories of the various (and many) Marias of the protagonist’s life. Replete with sexual content and interesting score of original jazz and electronic music, the film is shot sometimes in black and white, otherwise in muted palette, sometimes with digital and sometimes 16 mm film. Jesus is obviously experimenting. The director was on hand for Q&A; he charmingly admitted that the film has no message and that filmmaking for him at this stage is a “game.” Spanish with English subtitles.

“Morirse En Domingo“’s (English title “Never on Sunday“) should really be “To Die on a Sunday” or more aptly “Never Die on a Sunday.” This is director Daniel Gruener’s second film, the first ten long years ago was a Mexican horror film “Sobrenatural.” This time round Gruener tackles an unbelievable tale of the death of a beloved familiy member and the odyssey of his body and his nephew as they are caught in one intrigue following another – all the more arresting because it is based on a true story. This film codifies that truth is indeed stranger than fiction. If you have firsthand experience with Mexico you’ll even more appreciate the inside look at the underbelly of Mexican life with its flawed and complex textures. Gruener is a master of tension and mixes just enough surrealism to give the film that special Latin flavor. Cinematography, musical score and acting are superb. Gruener was also on hand for Q&A. Spanish with English subtitles.

I don’t want to say that I have left the best for last, because I thoroughly enjoyed Gruener’s film. But “Malos Habitos” or “Bad Habits” by director Simon Brass was such a visual delight and so exquisitely produced that it remains my favorite so far. The entwined tales of women with eating disorders is set in another Mexico from Gruener – this is the Mexico of privilege beside the Mexico of fervent Catholicism. Food is a tool, a symbol of weakness, of power, of pleasure. Brass comes from a background of directing commercials and he has all the requisite skill to produce breaktaking dream-visions which combine the baroque palette of Velaquez with the imagery of surrealists like Dali. He has assembled a wonderful cast of natural actors who lead us most convincingly (including extreme weight loss and gain) along their excruciating journeys. Brass was also available for a Q&A session after the film. Spanish with English subtitles.

This is a taste of high calibre film coming from our southern neighbors. The directors exhibit a remarkable ability to combine grittiness with humor, pathos with eros while telling a good story with finely-drawn characters of great believability. Despite the melodramatic cirumstances of complicated lives, our glimpes into the bottomless depths are achieved by subtle and often brief dialogues, only rarely punctuated by intense emotional outburst. I am left with a hunger for more.

Zion Canyon Art & Flute Festival

The 3rd Annual Zion Canyon Art & Flute Festival is a world event. Starting at 9:30a on Fri June 8 and continuing the weekend til 5pm on Sun Jun 10, enthusiasts and friends of the Native American Flute gather in Springdale Utah for workshops, concerts and sharing of the passion for this special art form.

Evening concerts on Fri & Sat begin at 6:30p and end at about 10p. The cost of admission to the Festival is only $2 pp or $5 the weekend. Children under 12 are free. Workshops are sometimes free; when there is a charge the fees range from $10-$40. Concerts are $20 per evening or $35 for both. Here’s your chance to say thank you to law enforcement and the good work they do for the community. This event is for kids from shelters who have been dealt a pretty lousy hand in life – certainly far more unfortunate than 99.9% of you who are reading this. Who says cops don’t have a heart? This annual Spring Fair is put on by the Nevada Conference of Police and Sheriffs to help sponsor a few kids from Clark County Youth Services that have had a life too hard for most of us to imagine. Helping them “achieve Respect, Love and Human Values” is the goal of the Nevada C.O.P.S. and these youngsters come to the Spring Fair and enjoy refreshments, games and entertainment supplied by contributions from the community. The fair is a special treat for the kids; they get to interact with police officers in a fun way. In fact, it’s a way for all of us to get to know law enforcement as real people who care about our city. McGruff the crime-fighting dog will be on site to make a special presentation.

The Nevada C.O.P.S. are asking for your financial support to make this day an even bigger success than last year. There are many upfront costs, so the earlier you make your donation, the better the party for the kids (of all ages.)

As much as I think you should stay in town for Memorial Day weekend and support our Las Vegas activities, I feel compelled to tell you about the 15th Annual Love Festival in LA with so much great music, I’d be remiss in my responsibility if I ignored it. Dragon Boat Festival

In the beautiful setting of Lake Las Vegas, 44 foot, teak Chinese war canoes will compete in three 500-meter race heats on Sat May 5, starting at 10am. Each canoe has a 22-person crew with 20 paddlers, a drummer and a steerman. Teams come from US and Canada to compete.

Ceremonies will start at MonteLago Village on Fri May 4 @ 6:30pm with the “Dotting of the Eye Ceremony,” a tradition which awakens the Dragon spirit. Enjoy a performance of the Shaolin dancers followed by a screening of “South Pacific” on the Events Plaza.

Look for vendors with food and fun and lots of entertainment for the whole family. Proceeds from the Dragon Boat Pledge Program benefit the Nevada Childhood Cancer Foundation.

City of Lights Jazz and R&B Festival

Get ready one of the hottest Jazz Festivals of the season, #13 of the City of Lights Jazz and Rhythm & Blues Festival right here in Las Vegas on Fri Apr 20 and Sat Apr 21. Promoter Michael Schivo puts together talent he considers “fresh, funky and cutting edge.” He has an eye for groups that are just about to break big, so it is always exciting to see the Line-Up he has hand-picked. The Festival starts with a four hour event on Friday night called “It’s a Stone Soul Picnic” featuring funk group The Bar-Kays and the Dazz Band at 6pm followed by R&B/jazz keyboardist George Duke at 8:30 pm. Schivo promises a non-stop party for “Friday Night Mad Hatter.”

The Saturday all day festival starts at 1pm and goes to 10 pm wiwth The Philippe Saisse Trio, Urban Jazz Coalition, guitarist Nick Colionne, Hiroshima, and finishing off the day with Jazz Attack. Schivo is excited about showcasing Jazz Attack with “smooth jazz superstars” Rick Braun, Richard Elliot, Peter White and Jonathan Butler.
