Picasso Exhibit at Bellagio

It’s hot outside, so if you are looking for something to do in the cool, check out the exhibit at the Bellagio. Pablo Picasso is best known for his paintings and drawings, but he actually was a fairly prolific sculptor and ceramicist. Thirty of his works in the media of ceramics are on display at Las Vegas’ Bellagio Gallery of Fine Art, (started May 25) and will continue through January 14, 2008. “In the Master’s Hands: Treasures from the Estate of Pablo Picasso” includes figures of an owl, a bird, a fish and a bull with a series of portraits and scenes painted on tiles, plates and plaques. Last Day for Pauite Elders Exhibit

If you are looking for an interesting day trip, don’t forget the drive to Overton and the Lost City Musuem. Besides the regular exhibit, they are featuring this special treatise of Pauite Elders. It took over five years to create this project with interviews and photographs of Southern Pauite Elders. The participants include the five bands of the Pauite Tribe of Utah, the Kaibab Tribe of AZ, the San Juan Tribe of UT, the Las Vegas, Moapa and Pahrump Tribes of NV and the Chemehuevi Tribe of CA. The display was created by writer Logan Hebner and photographer Michael Plyler and continues until the end of June.

The Lost City Museum is open from 8:30a-4:30p. Admission is $3 adults/$2 seniors. Children and members free. It is located in Overton on Route 169. Call 702-397-2193 or visit dmla.clan.lib.nv.us.

Thurs Jun 07 from 6-9 pm is the opening reception for artists Sharon Gainsburg and Wendy Westover. Gainsburg’s media is stone and Westover’s is charcoals and pastels. Both artists are centered in the area, with Gainsburg making her home in Utah and Westover here in Las Vegas. LA Times Pagel speaks on Gaikotsu art

The Las Vegas Art Museum is hosting an exhibit by Sush Machia Gaikotsu thru Jul 8 and have invited Los Angeles Times art critic David Pagel to comment on Gaikotsu’s work, which is described as playful pop paintings. The Grand Art Competition – Opening Reception

The Cultural Division of Clark County Parks & Rec is sponsoring “The Grand,” a non-themed art competition open to all media and all artists over 18 years old who live in Clark County. There is a cash award of $1000 for the “Best of Show.” Stephen Bendee will select 15-25 pieces for exhibit, as well as the cash prize winner. Grand Opening of Springs Preserve

Jun 8-10 was the grand opening weekend of the Springs Preserve, a multi-sensory nature and historical experience park with outdoor concerts, museums, restored environments, nature walks and other exhibits designed to educate on the human and natural culture of the Las Vegas Valley. The springs area was home to native Americans thousands of years before the Spanish arrived to name the area “las vegas” or “the meadows.”

Several “experiences” are listed as attractions: The ORIGEN Experience, the Desert Living Center, Gardens/Trails and a beautiful new Nevada State Museum scheduled to open in 2008.

ORIGEN captures the human story from early inhabitants to the possibilities of the future, a story told in 3 interactive exhibits progressing from long ago yesterdays to not-so-distant tomorrows.

Desert Living Center (DLC) is called the “green” jewel in the crown of the preserve. Buildings are the first LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) structures in Nevada. The purpose of the the DLC is to educate on environmentally sound protection of resources without sacrificing quality of life.

Gardens and Trails consist of 4 themed walking trails bordering the cienaga (wetlands) plant, bird and animal sanctuary and an 8 acre Botanical Gardens with a range of desert landscapes and hands-on activities. You’ll also find a children’s theatre, a weather station, a kitchen area for outdoor cooking classes and an Enabling Garden for those with physical challenges.

Hours for the preserve will be 10a-10p during summer and 10a-6p during winter. Prices for tickets vary according to exhibit access, age and residence (for example: NV adult $14.95, NV child $6.95). Artist Tsui @ The Gallery at Summerlin

If you want to see some marvelous paintings by a Chinese artist with 20 years of New York art scene in his work, and meet the artist himself, be at the Gallery at Summerlin Fri May 11 from 6p-9p. George Tsui relocated to Beijing in 1996 to begin “a creative journey into China.” That journey produced a series of works titled “Fair Ladies of the Past,” and showcases Chinese women in the splendor of imperial China. The artist’s “duel technique of painting and sculpture is traditionally ornate yet abstract in the most modern sense.” It is also incredibly beautiful judging by the piece in the promotional materials.

The event is a fundraiser for the Nevada Cancer Institute which will recieve a portion of the proceeds of the Gallery’s sale of Tsui’s art work. In addition, Collectors Editions, the publisher for Tsui, will also donate a portion of sales proceeds to NCI.

Work available for purchase includes oils embellished with antique wood details, unornamented oil paintings, giclees and oil sketches. A giclee is a high resolution reproduction of two-dimensional artwork, utilizing digital scans and special large format printers. They can be printed on a variety of media including canvas, vinyl and transparent acetates. This is a technology vastly superior to traditional lithography both in terms of vividness and longevity of color as well as crispness of detail.

New Horizons Academy Art Show & Auction

Start with wine and hors d’oeuvres at 5:30p, go to quick draws at 6:00p with live auction at 7:00p on Sat May 12. Featured work is “Villa de Santiago” by Ed Hoag. Hoag is the president of the Nevada Watercolor Society and the associate director for the School of Architecture at UNLV. He paints only subjects and places he has visited and personally experienced.
