Frontier Implosion 11-13-07

Sometime after 2am just off the strip, with sliding doors cracked to let in the cool desert night air, the still of the night was shattered by the sounds of deep rumbling. Like a giant Harley revving its powerful engine, reverberating vibrations stirred us from heavy sleep.

Luckily we weren’t so lazy we pulled the covers and pillows over our heads, but let curiosity drive us from our bed to the balcony. Although mainly blocked by the new Wynn Encore, we still had a good enough view of the implosion to make it another memorable night just “off the strip.”

It wasn’t long ago that we had full view of the marvelous demise of the old Stardust Casino. Even though we were not afforded the full view this time around, this implosion party perhaps delighted all the more because of the complete unexpectedness of it.

Isn’t that why we love this town? You never know what’s going to happen – and most of the time the surprises are pleasant. Thank you Las Vegas again!

Pure Spanish Horse Show & Theatre

The Foundation of the Pure Spanish Horse is presented Aug 29-Sep 02 at South Point Equestrian Event Center. Pure Spanish horses, known in Spain as the Pura Raza Española, are one of the rarest breeds in the US. Known the “Horse of Kings,” they are incredibly beautiful and good-natured with amazing athletic ability. To learn more about these regal animals, go to prehorse.org. Two evening shows of “Theatre of the Spanish Horse” at 7 pm Fri Aug 31 & 8 pm Sat Sept 01 feature world famous horse extremist, Tommie Turvey performing daring trick horse acts. With a billing of top national trainers and horses, look for other exciting performances including longlining (the horse is guided from the ground) and traditional Spanish riding disciplines. Star Trek Convention @ Hilton

World Beer Cup 2006 and 2008

Every two years the Brewers Association sponsors the World Beer Cup. The last competition was in 2006, the next is in San Diego Apr 08. 2221 beers were entered in ‘06 from 540 breweries, 56 coutnries, in 85 styles or categories with 109 judges from 18 countires. The USA won 64% of all medals with Germany at 11%, Belgium 6% and Australia & Japan 4%. 38 countries participated in 2002, so the competition is definitely growing internationally.

California took the most medals with 25, Wisconsin 14, Colorado 12, Washington State 12, Oregon 11 and Illinois 10. Nevada won 4 medals which is not bad considering brewing not something we’re known for. The winners for NV are:

I am re-posting this event cause I am personally so excited about it. Lee’s Discount Liquor is staging their 1st Annual extravaganza of a beer tasting called the Lee’s Beer Experience. China Town Hall: US-China Military Relations

This May 31 program sponsored by the Las Vegas World Affairs Council is a two-part exploration of US-China Military Relations in the 21st Century. A webconference with Ass’t Sec Christopher Hill, US State Dept Bureau of East Asian and Pacific Affairs will take place from 4p-5p. Ass’t Sec Hill will give a 10 minute talk and follow with 35 minutes of Q&A by phone or email. The webconference is open to anyone registered for the Town Hall Meeting later that evening. “Dirty Dancing” Back on Big Screen!

In celebration of its 20th anniversary, this film phenomenon starring Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey is playing May 1 & 2 at 7:30 at select local movie theatres. Ticket prices are $10 to re-live the original movie “PLUS exclusive never-before-seen footage and interviews with cast members and other stakeholders.” The film directed by Emile Ardoline rocked the boat in a big way in 1977 and this reprise should be a must-see for memorable contemporary screen dancing second only to perhaps Saturday Night Fever. Andy Walmsley and Steve Lee, a couple of British ex-pats, decry the fact that the English are so well acclimated to life in Las Vegas that they don’t hang out together. They’re trying to change that by hosting their first big party and hoping that a contingent of the approximately 30,000 natives of Great Britain will turn out. The UKLV (United Kingdom Las Vegas) bash will be on Mon Apr 30 7p-midnight. Everything except drinks will be free – food, tea, entertainment, raffles. Two bands will play, Zen Lizard and the UKLV Supergroup made up of 15 instrumentalists. I used to live in Cornwall. Wonder if that counts? Do you need a passport to get in or just the right accent? LVWAC International Educator of the Year Awards

The Las Vegas World Affairs Council will hold its annual International Educator of the Year Award Dinner May 4 when outstanding teachers from the Clark Country School District, CCSN, UNLV and Nevada State College are honored for their “contributions to international education in the performance of their normal duties.” The selectd group will travel to India for an educational experience in political, economic and health care systems, a trip designed to reward them for their excellence and give them additional tools for success in raising international awareness in the classroom.

There are several categories of awards including the International Educator of the Year, Outstanding International Educationers at UNLV, Nevada State, CCSN, High School, Public and Private, Middle School and a Founder’s Award.

The two featured speakers are Bret Whipple, Chairman of the Nevada Board of Regents, and Somy Ali, South Asian actress, activist and documentary film maker.

Ladies Lost Weekend

This is a art retreat for the ladies (and their kids, if they want) sponsored by the Goldwell Open Air Museum in Rhyolite NV. The weekend activity is to site and restore a couch covered in tile and mosaic designed by German artist Sofie Siegman. The result of an artist residency at the Lied Discovery Children’s Museum in Las Vegas, the couch was donated to the Goldwell Open Air Museum which wants to provide visitors a resting place with a view across the Amargosa Valley and the Museum’s sculpture park. May 4-May 6.
The weekend is $50 ($25 a day) which includes meals on Sat and Sun, some mementos, and best of all, a Saturday night soak at Bailey’s Hot Springs. There is lodging and camping in nearby Beatty. Red Rock (volunteer) Day

150 volunteers are needed to help with conservation and restoration projects at Red Rock. If you are interested, please meet at the Red Rock Canyon Visitor Center between 7:30a and 8:00a on Apr 28. Be prepared for an outdoor day of useful activity – bring gloves, sunscreen, wear long pants, a hat and closed-toes shoes. Lunch and lunchtime entertainment will be provided. Amy Tan is a wonderful writer, her works rich in vocabulary and imagery, her characters finely drawn and complex, her stories intricate and unpredictable. The chosen book for the Las Vegas-Clark County Library District’s 6th annual “Reading Las Vegas” is Tan’s “Joy Luck Club,” a novel brought to the big screen by Director Ang Lee. The author will herself speak and read at two events in Las Vegas this weekend. Her books will be available for purchase and signing.

The heat is really turned up on this year’s UNLVino.

Thur Apr 12: Start with a poolside party “Bubble-licious” at the Hard Rock Hotel which will serve more than 100 different sparkling wines from all over the world. 7p-10p Cost $75.

Fri Apr 13: is “Auss-some and Then Some!” at the District at Green Valley Ranch. Tasting of great wines from Down Under and South Africa. 7p-10p. Cost $50.

Sat Apr 14: Limited seating for an “Exclusive Tasting with George Riedal” with four wines served in Riedel “Vinum Extreme” glasses. 1p-2p. Paris Las Vegas. Cost $75.

First Friday Party Downtown Las Vegas

This Friday is sure to be an historical event in Downtown Las Vegas. You have the fun monthly giant block party happening in the Arts District Downtown coupled with the events revolving around the Las Vegas Grand Prix. Just remember that some streets will be blocked and you will not have normal access with your car.

All the galleries are open late and the streets will be teeming with native life. A growing tradition in a lot of towns these days, the First Friday in Las Vegas is indeed special. You’ll find lots of FREE live entertainment at what is fast becoming the monthly place for the young to see and be seen. The bar scene is hopping all over Downtown as the party goes on after hours.

Verge Music Stage (Colorado & Casino Center) features Afro-Cuban Jazz Band, the Uncommon Alliance Las Vegas break dancing group, Roman Beats from Ft. Worth and the LA new soul/experimental group, The Basiqs. The Land Rover Stage presents Las Vegas’s own Pickadillos, followed by XRPM and finishing the evening with Hedwig & the Angry Inch. I saw the Uncommon Alliance at the Verge Grand Opening Party, which was their first gig. I’m thrilled to see them getting some deserved attention.

Event hours are 6pm-10pm, but you need to check the schedule as individual venues vary. Alcoholic beverages must be purchased from Official First Friday Vendors ONLY. Be forewarned – You’ll have to throw away any other drinks/beers/etc when you enter the Festival area.

Great Party for Debut of Verge

The upcoming mid-rise condo project in uptown-downtown Las Vegas held a party last night to celebrate the Grand Opening of Verge’s Lifestyle Center. With police directing traffic on Main Street and the huge parking lots full, you knew the minute you arrived that something exciting was going on. A great white tent contained a vodka and wine bar with a menu of exotic and refreshing cocktails – hosted by Verge, thank you very much. Servers circulated with trays of delectable appetizers prepared by the Triple George Grille.

The Golden Nugget supplied a craps table and music was provided by DJ Mike White. We were treated to some live trumpet with a Latin jazz feel to accompany the electronic. The trumpet player, Rico Sanchez, also produced the event through Access West Marketing. A highlight of the evening was the performance of Las Vegas’ own Uncommon Connection, a small group of highly skilled breakdancers. This was their first professional performance. The Downtown Cocktail Room, their own Grand Opening just last week, was represented by lovely young girls in red knit dresses.

The Verge exhibited a Loft model, modern and spacious with floor to ceiling glass. They will begin accepting reservations on Mon Mar 19.

I personally enjoyed watching the crowd – hundreds of beautiful young persons, handsome guys and slim girls in short skirts and wonderful shoes. I could have done a photo album on the amazing footwear. I have no idea if men even notice such things, but feet were definitely the fashion statement of the night.

If you’re interested in viewing a sequence of photos of the Stardust Implosion, taken from my balcony at the Regency Towers, starting at about 2 1/2 hours before the final collapse, go to picasaweb. I did not have the benefit of tripod or telephoto lens, but used the balcony of my terrace as a tripod and a Leica Digilux 2 digital camera 90 mm lens. I thought about cropping and enlarging the shots, but decided to give a real life view of the event, exactly as we experienced it. Chose the slideshow option for the best screening.
