8 out of 10

Open 24 hours

Rebel’s pizza, which opened over the summer, has already become a UNLV hot spot in just a few short months. Not surprising considering their incredibly cheap deals. Catering mostly to the UNLV market (obviously named Rebels for a reason), the place always has people in there eating and picking up pizzas, even late at night.

There’s a wall dedicated to UNLV Graduates where you can sign your name. It’s pretty cool looking at all the comments and doodles people have put up…

They have a decent number of tables with fresh grated Parmesan instead of the usual powder – and salt/pepper mills.

Open 24 hours, they offer a simple menu at incredibly cheap prices. The base cheese pizza is $3.50 plus tax with toppings only 99 cents each. A one topping pizza comes out to $4.80 with tax, which is cheaper than Little Caesars and other similar discount pizza companies. You can even get an unlimited topping pizza for $7.99.

Not only are they cheaper but better quality too. The pizza tastes better and is always made to order – not sitting in a heater. Don’t get me wrong – it’s not the best pizza ever. Don’t come here expecting to get a Metro pizza, but for the price, this place is unbeatable – especially at 3am.

Besides pizza they have a sandwich combo for $5 which includes a sandwich with unlimited veggies, drink and thick cut fries. I’ve tried 3 of their sandwiches and I have to say I wasn’t very impressed. Avoid the roast beef; I thought it was almost inedible. The club wasn’t bad, considering the price.

I pretty much stick to their pizzas. They offer salads and various other sides, but have yet to try them.

Overall Rebel’s Pizza is an incredible deal and perfect for parties or events. Get 10 one topping pizzas for $48 and you’re hard pressed to cater an event for less.

I highly recommend trying it out – especially if you’re living on a budget and like, who isn’t these days???? But remember you get what you pay for.

p.s. Most of their toppings are good except I don’t recommend the mushrooms. They are the canned kind and very soggy.

This is the chance to get in on one of the best wine-tasting events in town and the only wine radio show in the world with a live audience – you!

Email Les now to get a place and get on his list. Kudos to Les for keeping this show on the air for 8 years! and with great venues each week.

Thank you Les because the opportunity to rotate through some of the city’s best yet affordable eateries is one of the perks of an audience participant – not to mention the wine tasting, low-key wine education and excellent company.

Every Thursday from 7-8 pm, Les Kincaid cablecasts his radio wine show around the world from a roving selection of Las Vegas restaurants. Audience participants are treated to 3 varietals of wine, with accompanying appetizers supplied by the restaurant. Les, long time professor of the grape at UNLV, keeps the discussion of the finer delicacies of wine cultivation low-key and shares the head table with guest vintners, sommaliers and chefs.

Your job in the audience is to drink, eat, be merry and applaud loudly when cued. Tickets must be reserved in advance by invitation via email. To get on the guest list, email les@leskincaid.com. Cost is normally $20 and includes wine, food and a lottery drawing for a bottle of the evening’s wines or featured book. Show is from 7p-8p, but you need to show up by 6:30.

"Remember, wine IS food!" Les has a great email newsletter you can subscribe to to learn about wine, good food and good living.

This little film festival in Las Vegas is finally getting respect, and judging by the schedule of films, is screening a wide spectrum which should meet the taste and interests of just about any movie fan. You start with the glitz of the Opening of “Ocean’s Thirteen” and the super-cool George Clooney, Brad Pitt and Matt Damon gracing the Red Carpet on Wed Jun 06 5:30p at the Palms and end the 10 day festival with Ben Kingsley receiving the Vanguard Actor Award followed by a screening of his black comedy “You Kill Me.”

In between you fill the days with an eclectic mix of tantalizing selections from the powerful Mexican cinema industry, – some fascinating documentaries including “Mr Untouchable” of the Harlem drug trade of the 70’s and “The Devil Came On Horseback” witnessing the genocide in Darfur, – throw in World Premieres such as “All God’s Children Can Dance,” an English-language version of a Murakami short story, – enhance with British and Hollywood comedies – and still the varied selection is far from complete. Student filmmakers have a chance to display their promise with Short Films UNLV and Short Films CCSN.

Complement the mix with Mike Newell’s receipt of the Vanguard Director Award, Jerry Weintraub’s Vanguard Producer Award, Charlize Theron’s Half-Life Award – and a reprise of David Lynch’s 1986 “Blue Velvet” and you begin to sense the scope of the selection.

Dates of festival: Jun 06-Jun 16. Showtimes vary. My calendar indicates only the first screening of each day. Tickets are $10 per screening, with passes ranging from $100-$525. For more info call 702-507-4849 (Theatre Box Office) or 888-883-4278 or visit cinevegas.com. Venue for most screenings is the Brenden Theatres at the Palms 4321 W Flamingo Rd Las Vegas NV.

Thousands and thousands of roses nested in Liberace-style candelabras graced the circular tables draped in crushed red velvet. “Everything’s coming up roses” was the theme and certainly there was a bumper crop – but more of green ($) than red. Raffles and silent and live auctions offered gourmet dinners and spa weekends – some prizes tintillating elegant dinners for multiple guests served by top chefs in your own home. Larry Hart’s Botannica did the decor and floral displays with marvelous theatrical aplomb, succeeding in balancing extravagence with good taste. Grammy winner Hart also sang. Is there no end to talent in some people?

Working with nutritionists from the University of Nevada Cooperative Extension, the Program teaches young grade schoolers about healthy food combinations and making the right choices for their bodies. Last night’s gala event certainly added fuel to the Program with just one live auction gourmet dinner going for $18,000. Now there’s somebody willing to put his money where his mouth is!

The Enneagram is basically a 9-pointed, geometric figure, the name derived from Greek ennea for nine and grammos for something written or drawn. The use of the Enneagram of Personality is a method of personality description and analysis in which people are divided into nine groups, each with their characteristic psychology. The work may have originated with the Sufis and was supposedly introduced to the West by G.I. Gurdjieff. The form by which it is known today seems to have originated with Bolivian Oscar Ichazo who established a Arica Shool in 1968. As an interesting aside, the Jesuits have been big proponents of the methodology and have used it extensively for better understanding ego fixation and how it expresses itself in the human psyche.

There are nine basic groups, with variations in personality classified as combinations of those nine numbers: for example, a One leaning to Nine. This would be a One personality with heavy Nine influences. This is a very simplistic explanation of a highly-evolved and complicated intellectual system that has great potential, according to some, for spiritual enlightenment. It definitely is a useful tool in understanding what makes people tick and what makes them act or react to social stimuli. Understanding that can alleviate many problems in miscommunication and assist in better functioning social units.

Unlike astrology or numerology or other “ologies” that attempt to classify people, the Enneagram is not based on time of birth, but on the ego’s response, as developed to distinct stimuli and events in childhood. There are direct correlations between Jungian prototyping such as the Meyers Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) combinations of E/I, S/N, T/F, J/P (Extroversion/Introversion, Sensing/Intuitiion, Thinking/Feeling, Judging/Perceiving. Many are familiar with MBTI from employment testing and/or testing at career guidance centers at high schools and colleges. For more on MBTI go to myersbrigg.org.

The 9 basic prototypes are:
One: Reformer, Critic, Perfectionist
Two: Helper, Giver, Caretaker
Three: Achiever, Performer, Succeeder
Four: (Tragic) Romantic, Individualist, Artist
Five: Observer, Thinker, Investigator
Six: Loyalist, Devil’s Advocate, Defender
Seven: Enthusiast, Adventurer, Sensationalist, Epicure
Eight: Leader, Protector, Challenger, Boss
Nine: Mediator, Peacemaker, Preservationist

If you’d like to take a simple personality test to see which enneagram type you are, go to 9types.com.
In addition to those classes, which are rich and varied, the UNLV Educational Outreach Program offers a host of possibilities for further education in very practical areas such paralegal certification, medical transcription, banking certification, troubleshooting and maintaining your PC, Adobe Photoshop and much more. There are exciting field trips like the Grand Canyon Railway, fossil hunting weekend, the Utah Shakespeare Festival and a geology-based cruise on Lake Mead on the Forever Earth Boat. There are a host of Food and Wine classes including Tea Etiquette, Sushi, Tequila Tasting and Beers & Brews. Throw in screenwriting courses and How to Plot Novels, Plays or Scripts with Beginning Italian and Canine “Good Citizen” Training and you have a summer of experiences at a very reasonable cost. I have taken a couple of classes and feel I got very good value. The catalogue has been mailed out to most households, but check out the website for more info.

There are several ways to enroll:
online: edoutreach.unlv.edu with credit card
by phone: 702-895-3394 by credit card
by fax: 702-895-4195 by credit card
by mail: Educational Outreach 4505 Maryland Pkwy Box 451019 Las Vegas 89154-1019 by check or money order. NO CASH.
in person: walk-in 851 W. Tropicana (corner Trop & Swenson.) No mail please.

UNLV will host one of the most important political forums on healthcare to date. The Democratic Presidential candidates are all invited; present for the discussion will be Hillary Clinton, Chris Dodd, John Edwards, Mike Gravel, Dennis Kucinich, Barack Obama, Bill Richardson. Sen Edwards announced today that he will stay in the race in spite of the news that his wife Elizabeth is suffering a reoccurence of breast cancer. The Edwards family’s challenges underscore the importance of just such a forum on our national crisis in healthcare.

The Forum will be at UNLV Cox Pavillion and is by invitation only. As expected, every seat will be occupied. If you are not one of the lucky chosen, you can follow the discussion from 9:00 am-2:00 pm by live video stream at ThinkProgress.org. You will need RealPlayer in order to view it: www.real.com. You can also submit a question to any/all of the candidates, to be processed by a panel of health care experts. Selected questions will be asked of the candidate by the moderator, Karen Tumulty of Time magazine, during the Q & A section. The event is co-sponsored by the Center for American Progress Action Fund and the Service Employees International Union (SEIU). You can read about the SEIU and its fight for quality, affordable healthcare on their website: www.seiu.org

Nevada is considered, along with Iowa, a critical primary state for the candidates. Gov Bill Richardson of New Mexico has established a campaign office here.

If you have ever had to write one of those essays about compare and contrast, you will get the gist of the Black Mountain Institute Panel Discussion on The Vietnam War in Light of Iraq. The panel of six scholars and authors contributed their personal insights into the two conflicts; similarities easier to expound than differences. Both qualify as huge political, military and moral blunders; are we splitting hairs to decide which is the more tragic? The distance of time has apparently softened the Vietnam misstep as all silently agreed with Panelist and Novelist O’Brien that the US Iraq invasion and fruitless occupation is a “disaster on a scale that we may never come back from.” Not too cheery a thought and certainly not a vote of confidence in the future.

Similarities: We entered both conflicts ignorant of their cultures and without understanding of their own internal historical struggles. As Irsfield so aptly put it, “We got in the way of their history.” We certainly formed our political opinions based on misrepresented facts and propaganda, even outright lies. We justified our action on a fear of the domino effect: all Asia would go Communist, all the Middle East will fall under the power of extremist Islam. In both cases the enemy is not clearly identifiable, wrecking havoc in our operations where we employ locals as support. The enemy is everywhere, and as Herring queried, “Whom do we kill?” Lacking a defined target, the young soldier wants to kill everyone.

Differences: In Vietnam we entered into an existing war, one that had waged for decades and was a struggle by a people to be free of foreign domination, Chinese and Japanese as well as French. In Iraq we created the war, unleashing a struggle between three separate and competitive groups that had been controlled by the Saddam regime. Because of 911 and the anthrax scare, we believed we were in imminent danger as a nation. Vietnam was always very far away. There is a strong religious overtone to the Iraq conflict not existing in Vietnam. Although American Catholics sympathized with the ruling catholic regime in South Vietnam, it played a small part in public opinion. But the confusing complexities of the Sunni-Shiite struggle and our Christian world view of an aggressive Muslim movement threatening our existence are major triggers in our national psychology. This same element of fear was played out in Vietnam, not through religious channels, but from a fear of world-domination of Communism.

The Doc Rondo Hall was filled to capacity, 250 concerned citizens divided into two groups: UNLV students out of interest or class requirement and aging baby boomers who personally experienced that era in all its pain and turmoil. This has happened twice in our generation. Herring poses the question, “What does it tell us about ourselves?”

The discussion was highly academic, as to be expected, certainly dry and not a little lacking in animation. The sound system was not calibrated properly, which is really inexcusable considering the resources of the recital hall. It was very difficult to hear the panelists at various times, at other times comments were quite indiscernible. There really needs to be more attention paid to the technical part of such an evening as the impact is significantly lessened when the public has to strain to follow.

Panelists:
Tim O’Brien: author of the definitive novel on Vietnam, written from his own personal experience, “The Things They Carried.”
George C. Herring: Historian and author of “America’s Longest War: The United States and Vietnam, 1950-1975,” the most widely used account in college classes across the country.
John Irsfield: novelist and short story writer, UNLV professor of English:
Vu Tran: Vietnamese-born, author and winner of the O’Henry Award for short stories. Although raised in the US, Tran’s stories are all set in Vietnam.
Jimmy Castellanos: A Veteran of Peace, he was deployed to Iraq as a Marine and is now a conscientious objector.
Joseph “Andy” Foy: UNLV author of four books on Vietnam and currently writing “The American South and the Vietnam War.”

In one of the biggest upsets in the Chicago NCAA men’s basketball tournament, UNLV beat second-seeded Wisconsin 74-68. Moving to the third round for the first time since 1991, we are proud of the grit this team is displaying. From the start of the season, when no one took them seriously, they just kept their focus and went out there and won the games. Game against Oregon this Friday in St. Louis, tip off 6:40 pm local time. This is the first time UNLV has played Oregon since 1976.

Hats off to Carol Harter, former UNLV President, who manifested her vision of a think tank of writers and artists and birthed the Black Mountain Institute in 2006. The BMI is composed of the Forum (Forum on Contemporary Cultures), the North American Network of Cities of Asylum (NANCA) and the International Institute of Modern Letters (IML). Determined to be a forum where all can express themselves, regardless of political and cultural orientation, the BMI’s mission is to provide “an environment where thinkers and writers from all segments of global society can fight against entrenched perspectives….”

BMI is sponsoring a two-day event with a panel of authors, historians, educators and veterans who will explore “The Vietnam War in Light of Iraq” – the politics and lessons (apparently not well learned) of the Vietnam conflict vis a vis the current war in Iraq.

There will be a panel discussion starting at 7pm on Wed Mar 21 with historian Charles Herring, Iraq War veteran Jimmy Castellanos, Vietnam native Nu Tran and UNLV Professor John Irsfeld. UNLV Professor Joseph (Andy) Fry will moderate. Thurs, Mar 22 @ 7 pm, the two novelists, Tim O’Brien, Vietnam veteran, and Robert Stone will read from their latest works.

These events are open and free to the public. You do not need tickets or reservations. You are advised to arrive early to get good seats. For more info: 702-895-5542. Attention to different meeting halls: The venue Wed, Mar 21 is Doc Rondo Hall, UNLV Artemus Ham Fine Arts Building; the venue Thur Mar 22 is Barrick Museum Auditorium. Both UNLV campus.

I’m not much of a sports fan, but it’s always thrilling when the hometown team makes good. Besides, anyone can admire the kind of courage, positive thinking, discipline and focus that go into athletics. Against all predictions of a mediocre season, the Rebels and coach Lon Kruger dazzled us with a Mountain West Conference Tournament championship last weekend. And after all the grumblings about an unfair No. 7 seed, they are doing the only thing a winner does – leaving the seeding brouhaha behind and looking forward to game 1 of the NCAA. The Rebels face Georgia Tech, seeded #10, a formidable opponent whose long-time basketball reputation has caught even my attention over the years. The opener is at 9:25 am this Friday, and can be seen on KLAS Channel 8 or followed on radio ESPN 920 AM. There are a limited number of tickets available to UNLV students and faculty/staff, to be purchased through lottery. Call 702-895-3679 for info.

Just in case you don’t read the paper, see TV or listen to the radio, this weekend promises to be one of complete insanity in terms of traffic. The Mountain West Conference of College Men’s Basketball is at Thomas Mack and Nascar is at the LV Speedway. The numbers of visitors for these events is 150,000+, so two places to avoid: airport and I-15 (especially north of town.)

Check the special section of today’s paper for listings of carparks and special bus transport out to the Speedway. $10 each way, but probably worth every penny in the added time to your lifespan.

By the way, UNLV trounced Utah and moves into the next round. GO REBELS!!!!!
