World Affairs Council back with Ruan Zongze

I’m happy to report that the Las Vegas chapter of the World Affairs Council is back in action. They have changed their name and merged with the local chapter of the NCFR (Nevada Council on Foreign Relations) to form the Nevada World Affairs Council.

Their next major event will be an evening with Ruan Zongze, the Minister Counselor of the political department of the Chinese Embassy in Washington, DC. Mr. Ruan’s topic is "China-U.S. Relations in an Emerging New World Economy." The UNLV Institute for Security Studies is co-sponsor for the dinner at the Pinot Brasserie, Venetian Hotel.

Both Members and non-members are invited to attend Friday May 29 from 6pm-9pm. The cost is $50 pp, paid with cash or check at the door, and includes a 3 course dinner. The no-host cash bar and social reception are from 6pm-7pm, with dinner starting at 7pm. Mr. Ruan will speak and allow time for questions.

Regular meetings of the WAC are held on the second Wednesday each month, 6:30p-8:00p, at venues alternating between the eastside and the westside. There is a nominal charge (usually $20 pp) which may include a wine tasting or appetizers, depending on the locale.

The monthly meetings revolve around specific discussion topics such as "Peace in Peril: The Indian sub-continent – Afghanistan, Pakistan, India and the U.S." The discussions are lead by a moderator with active group participation in the form of questions, comments and friendly debate.

The merger of the WAC and NCFR makes sense. Both have the same mission – to provide a forum for globally-thinking Las Vegans to meet, to be informed by national and international figures, and to discuss international events, especially the direction or misdirection of American foreign policy.

Las Vegas has a bad reputation for low intellectualism, probably not undeserved. This group demonstrates that there are people here who think – and think about a world beyond work, daily life and the Strip. If you are looking to meet other people interested in the complex and intriguing U.S. role in global politics, this is the group for you.

The Law in Russia and Las Vegas – LVWAC luncheon

You are invited to lunch with the Las Vegas World Affairs Council Oct 26 @ 11:30a for their 3rd annual public luncheon highlighting visits to our city by delegations of Eastern European judges. This year the guest judges are from Russia and the luncheon will include a discussion of “The Law in Russia and Las Vegas” with several of the judges participating with comments and in Q&A.

The program itself is hosted by Senior US District Court Judge Lloyd George, who has hosted many delegations of Eastern European judges here in Las Vegas.

Venue is the Petrus Room at Wynn Las Vegas. Registration and networking starts at 11:30 am with lunch and speaking event from noon to 1pm. Cost is $40 members/$50 non-members/$20 students and includes lunch. Public welcome and encouraged to attend. For more info, go to the LVWAC website lvwac.org.

Note: I attended the luncheon last year with the Ukranian judges. It was my first LVWAC function and I was hooked! What a fascinating group of people and level of discussion. If you have a world view that extends beyond the city limits of this town and hunger to interact with others with similar perspective, check out this dynamic group with wide interests and global experience. But don’t be intimidated – an interest in national politics, international affairs and the wide world are all that are required to participate and enjoy.

LVWAC Downtown Presidential Series

The public is welcome to join this event sponsored by the Las Vegas World Affairs Council (LVWAC) on Aug 24 when presidential candidate Sen. Mike Gravel (D-Alaska) will speak on “The Solar Hydrogen Economy: A New Energy Policy for America.” A long-time activist, this former senator is known for his efforts to end the draft after Vietnam and for putting the Pentagon Papers into the public record in 1971.

The LVWAC is starting The Downtown Presidential Series to encourage presidential candidates to visit downtown Las Vegas, highlighting its diverse offerings. The series is billed as the place “where presidential candidates and downtown las vegas mix.” Time is 5:30p-7:30p, admission is $30 members/$40 non-members. Public welcome and highly encouraged to attend.

As an important aside, the City of Las Vegas is adding two hydrogen-fueled Ford E-450 buses to the city’s fleet, the 1st city in the West to put these ultra clean vehicles on the street.

IONS Meeting, Big Pharma and ADD

Anime Vegas

The existence of anime clubs is a really interesting phenomena. I have watched a fair share of the Japanese cartoons (animation) and it just doesn’t strike a cord with me. But the world-wide appeal among a very select segment of the population is undeniable. These are a dedicated lot and they have a group here that meets on the 2nd Saturday for a marathon viewing from 10:30a-4:30p. They show chapters from several series and caution that some of the cartoons are not suitable for children. Admission is Free. Black Powder Rifle and Pistol Shoot

And I hear complaints from people that there is nothing to do in Vegas unless you like gambling…..

If you are looking for something really different, try the Spring Mountain Free Trappers group which hosts a black powder muzzle loading rifle and pistol shoot twice a month in the summer and once a month in the winter.

Call to see if we are considered in winter now.

They also put on a knife and hawk (hatchett) throwing competition. I spoke with Dan (Buffalo Rump – see photo) and am assured all interested are welcome.

The firearms are replicas of traditional black powder weapons like Davy Crockett used, restricted to round ball only, 60 grain limit. Some of the 30-odd regulars make and sell leather clothing and are skilled at knife and hawk (hatchett) production. They can repair a gun and pride themselves on knowing the ways of the mountain men. You don’t have to have any firearms and you don’t have to compete.

They usually camp, are there all day Saturday and continue until about noon on Sunday. Some people drive up for the day in the RV’s, so roughing it is not required. The shoot takes place the 1st full weekend and 3rd weekend of the month during summer, the 1st weekend during winter. Most of the year the members meet at Lovell Canyon or CC Springs, on the way to Pahrump. The group summers at the Blue Tree Area in Lee’s Canyon (north on 95 towards Reno) from the first weekend in May. Buffalo Rump cautions that there is a small sign to indicate the turn.

The yearly Rendevzous is in the late fall at Spring Mt. Ranch State Park by Red Rock with about 250 people competing in rifle, pistol, smooth bore, hawk, knife, lance, archery, firestart, survival trek, competitions for kids and ladies and a dutch oven contest (that’s cooking.)

The Southern Nevada Area Fantasy Fiction Union is an informal group of science fiction and fantasy fans who meet once a month with informal movie outings and gatherings scheduled at least once a month. They maintain a large lending library for members and claim to be Las Vegas’ oldest Science Fiction Club. The monthly meeting is the 4th Sunday 1:30p-3:30p at the Clark County Library. Nevada Native Plant Society

The Nevada Native Plant Society is based out of Reno, but takes field trips around the state as well as in California. They are a non-profit dedicated to promoting interest in native Nevada plants and their preservation. “USS Las Vegas” Trekker Chapter

A corner of Quark’s Lounge at the Hilton last night was bursting with enthusiastic members of the Las Vegas branch of the International Federation of Trekkers (otherwise known to uninitiated as a Star Trek Club.) Officially titled the USS Las Vegas (NFC-0502), it’s a conceptual ship and crew guided by Captain Paul Walker, Jr and Executive Officer Mike Cornwell. Real life manifestation is a well-organized meet-up for all those who love Star Trek and the promise it gave us of frontiers beyond our small lonely planet.

The meeting kicks off with a detailed agenda, updates on Star Trek activities of all kinds, especially the upcoming August convention, reports on films and possible renewal of TV shows, and acknowledgments of new crew rank. The meal from Quark’s menu is complemented by a trivia quiz and general chit chat about beloved shows and characters ranging from the original series of 1966 with Captain Kirk to the present day whereabouts of popular cast members. Apparently Jonathan Frakes is tucked away in Maine, teaching acting. Trivia question: How many hours in a day on DS-9 (Deep Space 9)? Answer: 26

This group, with a membership of about 30 people and growing, does good works too. The Club has adopted a stretch of Kyle Canyon Rd (highway to Mt Charleston) and goes about four times a year to pick up litter. They also have a sister club from Henderson which is a Klingon ship and more militaristic in outlook. Hey, they’re Klingons, what do you expect?

The big buzz at the moment is the Star Trek Convention at the Hilton Aug 9-12 and the club’s Picardo Project. The USS Las Vegas has invited Bob Picardo (the hologram doctor from the Voyager series) for a club dinner on August 10 when the Las Vegas group and the Klingons will dine with Picardo and enjoy exclusive photo ops, autographs and general hob-knobbing. They are hoping other celebrities will also make an appearance. The dinner is open to members and guests only, but the club encourages you to join for only $14 a year if meeting the 3^rd Wed of each month with other Trekkies sounds like fun.

LVWAC Dinner for Chinese Basketball Team

The Las Vegas World Affairs Council is gearing up for a series of events to celebrate China and the 2008 Olympics. The first is a Welcome Dinner for the Chinese National Basketball Team here in Las Vegas dubbed “Beijing 2008 & Las Vegas: A Celebration of Business and Sport.” Invited guests include NBA phenomenom Yi Jianlian. ElDorado Cowboy Shooting Group

Today is the Las Vegas chapter of the National Speakers Association workshop on Sat May 19 from 9a-4p. This is a dynamic group of people – intelligent, involved and interesting. China Town Hall: US-China Military Relations

This May 31 program sponsored by the Las Vegas World Affairs Council is a two-part exploration of US-China Military Relations in the 21st Century. A webconference with Ass’t Sec Christopher Hill, US State Dept Bureau of East Asian and Pacific Affairs will take place from 4p-5p. Ass’t Sec Hill will give a 10 minute talk and follow with 35 minutes of Q&A by phone or email. The webconference is open to anyone registered for the Town Hall Meeting later that evening. Venue is the LVWAC Office.

The Town Hall Meeting starts at 7:00 pm and includes dinner at the Four Seasons. In cooperation with the National Committee on US-China Relations and their National China Town Hall Day, the event is hosted by the LVWAC who will lead a discussion of the present and anticipated military relationship between China and the US. Dances of Universal Peace

Meeting the first Thursday each month is a group called The Dances of Universal Peace who perform chants and dances from a variety of cultures. You need no experience or special talent to participate. The songs are taught in simple phrases, easy to learn and then combined with circle dancing. Very low key. It’s all about the spirit. LVWAC International Educator of the Year Awards

The Las Vegas World Affairs Council will hold its annual International Educator of the Year Award Dinner May 4 when outstanding teachers from the Clark Country School District, CCSN, UNLV and Nevada State College are honored for their “contributions to international education in the performance of their normal duties.” The selectd group will travel to India for an educational experience in political, economic and health care systems, a trip designed to reward them for their excellence and give them additional tools for success in raising international awareness in the classroom.

There are several categories of awards including the International Educator of the Year, Outstanding International Educationers at UNLV, Nevada State, CCSN, High School, Public and Private, Middle School and a Founder’s Award.

The two featured speakers are Bret Whipple, Chairman of the Nevada Board of Regents, and Somy Ali, South Asian actress, activist and documentary film maker.

“Socrates Cafe” Discussion Group

The Socrates Cafe meets every Tuesday 7:00 pm at the Reading Room at Mandalay Place to discuss life’s big questions in a “friendly, non-partisan, intelligent atmosphere.” Doesn’t sound like typical Las Vegas. The group seats itself in a circle of chairs, outside the bookstore and follows a semi-structured format of commentary and discussion, with a moderater. The group selects a philosophical question posed by members and then contribute in a round robin fashion. Socrates devoted his life to the quest of understanding through logic back about 500 BC and this group endeavors to keep emotions at bay and intellect at forefront.
