Goddess Path Classes

The Goddess Path is a series of classes “to introduce the Goddess in Her myriad aspects and explore Her in relation to the directions and elements.” A class is scheduled on Nov 10 and described as Above and Below. Les, long time professor of the grape at UNLV, keeps the discussion of the finer delicacies of wine cultivation low-key and shares the head table with guest vintners, sommaliers and chefs.

Jazz Combo Camp at CSN

Jazz vocalists, instrumentalists and enthusiastics of all ages and abilities (middle school to seniors) are invited to attend the 10th Annual Las Vegas Jazz Combo Camp at the College of Southern Nevada (CSN). The Camp runs from Jul 15-Jul 20 at CSN’s Cheyenne campus and is open to students with a minimum of one year study on their instrument.

Attendees work individually or in groups to develop “improv” skills. Jazz musicians of the highest quality are on hand for instruction and performances. The faculty will perform daily. This is a unique camp, one of the few held in the US. The grand finale performance by camp participants is on July 20 @ 1pm in the June Whitley Student Lounge. 5 week “Wines of France” class

The Wines of France Part I is a course offered by Norma Poole, Certified Sommelier, Court of Master Sommeliers and Wine Education & Consulting Services.

This five week course will cover wines from Bordeaux and Burgundy including their history. Enneagram Class at UNLV Ed Outreach

The UNLV Educational Outreach Program class “The Spiritual Wisdom of Personality: Explore the Enneagram” has been cancelled.

The Enneagram is basically a 9-pointed, geometric figure, the name derived from Greek ennea for nine and grammos for something written or drawn. The use of the Enneagram of Personality is a method of personality description and analysis in which people are divided into nine groups, each with their characteristic psychology. The work may have originated with the Sufis and was supposedly introduced to the West by G.I. Gurdjieff. The form by which it is known today seems to have originated with Bolivian Oscar Ichazo who established a Arica Shool in 1968. As an interesting aside, the Jesuits have been big proponents of the methodology and have used it extensively for better understanding ego fixation and how it expresses itself in the human psyche.

There are nine basic groups, with variations in personality classified as combinations of those nine numbers: for example, a One leaning to Nine. This would be a One personality with heavy Nine influences. This is a very simplistic explanation of a highly-evolved and complicated intellectual system that has great potential, according to some, for spiritual enlightenment. It definitely is a useful tool in understanding what makes people tick and what makes them act or react to social stimuli. Understanding that can alleviate many problems in miscommunication and assist in better functioning social units.

Unlike astrology or numerology or other “ologies” that attempt to classify people, the Enneagram is not based on time of birth, but on the ego’s response, as developed to distinct stimuli and events in childhood. There are direct correlations between Jungian prototyping such as the Meyers Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) combinations of E/I, S/N, T/F, J/P (Extroversion/Introversion, Sensing/Intuitiion, Thinking/Feeling, Judging/Perceiving. Many are familiar with MBTI from employment testing and/or testing at career guidance centers at high schools and colleges. For more on MBTI go to myersbrigg.org.

Paiute ethnobotany

The Clark Co. Museum is offering a series of Native American programs at the Museum in Henderson, with a discussion of local ethnobotany scheduled for Sat Apr 28. “Pauite” (sometimes Piute) refers to a group of North American Indians, divided into Northern and Southern. This grouping is not really correct, as the Northern Pauites are more related to the Shoshone and the Southerns to the Ute. It was the Southern Pauites who lived in this area, today with communities in Las Vegas, Pahrump and Moapa. Ethnobotany is simply the cultural uses of plants, the study of how peoples of a culture or region use indigenous plants, whether for food, shelter, medicine, clothing, hunting or religious rituals.

Summer Educational Outreach @ UNLV

I wrote an article on the summer school classes being offered at UNLV, classes which can be taken for credit, but which are open to enrollment for anyone who choses – not just those officially enrolled as students at the university.

In addition to those classes, which are rich and varied, the UNLV Educational Outreach Program offers a host of possibilities for further education in very practical areas such paralegal certification, medical transcription, banking certification, troubleshooting and maintaining your PC, Adobe Photoshop and much more. There are exciting field trips like the Grand Canyon Railway, fossil hunting weekend, the Utah Shakespeare Festival and a geology-based cruise on Lake Mead on the Forever Earth Boat. There are a host of Food and Wine classes including Tea Etiquette, Sushi, Tequila Tasting and Beers & Brews. There was a room packed with fellow vagabonds anxious to hear just how we could make that free vacation thing happen. Half-way through the 3 hour evening, our heads were spinning with the amount of information flowing from guest teacher, Gina Henry-Cook. Gina is our idol, a free spirit, fellow gypsy, who for 15 years has been manifesting her dream of traveling for a living, traveling as a lifestyle. She professes to work only from January to May, but as far as I could tell, her work is traveling around the country teaching this class. Not bad for a day job. Gina is a highly organized encyclopedia of factoids, websites, how-to’s, where to find, and just plain “go out and do it” practical advice and guidance. The powerful part is that Gina seems to have tried it all.

She offered 81 pages of ideas on getting free or discounted travel. She outlines exactly how to earn free airline tickets, making the most of your frequent flier miles. Trade homes with someone in Stockholm, play bridge with passengers for a free cruise, teach English for a hotel stay, sign on as a mystery shopper for meals or cash, deadhead cars for snowbirds, load up your suitcase with silk scarves and exotic jewelry for resale, organize group trips for your friends that cover your own travel costs. There is no end to her creativity or enthusiasm. She’s working every angle, all the time. Her voice rings with glee when she talks about FREE - her favorite word. Her favorite reward? The postcards from around the world she receives every day from students who grabbed her ideas and ran with them – some of them very very far.

UNLV Summer School

I just received the course catalogue for the UNLV summer term. Summer term is actually composed of three different sessions: Session 1, 3 weeks, May 14- Jun 1; Session 2, 5 weeks, Jun 4- Jul 6; Session 3, 5 weeks, Jul 9- Aug 10. As usual there are some great opportunities to enrich your mind and pursue some areas of interest, covering the material fairly rapidly.

I see that the Film Department is offering “Major Figures of the Cinema: James Bond” in Session 2 and “Major Figures of the Cinema: Clint Eastwood” in Session 3. I audited the Clint Eastwood course a couple of summers ago and enjoyed 3 evenings a week watching and discussing Eastwood films spanning his entire career, acting and directing, from spaghetti westerns to Million Dollar Baby. What a joy! Those classes are held in the evening, so you don’t have to be retired to take advantage.

Although the classes are certainly more academic than the more practical courses offered through the UNLV Educational Outreach Program, there are definitely some interesting selections, including Spanish, Japanese, Italian, Hatha Yoga, Tae Kwan Do, History of Rock Music, Survey of Afro-American Dance and US Military History since 1900.
