If you are looking for fun and information all in one place, you should check out this new blog TheGardenDude.com dedicated to sustainable vegetable agriculture in your own back (and front) yard. David is The Garden Dude from California who has perfected, or at least is on the road to mastering, the art of growing veggies totally organically in pots. Not that kind of pot!

He’s posted recipes and videos on cooking up these veggies and other healthy stuff like fresh fish. Being a true California Dude, David has music to really get you in the Dude Mood. Go to the resources tab on his site and select “veggie songs.”

Choose from: We are the Vegetables by INXS, Vegetables by Radiohead, Love you Like a Fresh Vegetable by Tony Rebel and Vega-tables by the incomparable Brian Wilson. And of course, being that the Dude is totally rad and way California, you can cook down memory lane with the Beach Boys – Vegetables. You might need to download a plugin or two.

Remember “If the Dude can do it, you can do it.”

www.TheGardenDude.com

Way cool!

These articles will feature stories of people whose lives are dedicated to making a difference – in our town, in our country, maybe even across the globe.

My first featured personality is Sheila Z (Stirling), Director of the Open Wisdom Institute, author, member of the Light Team of Ions, organizer of the “Intentional Wellness Conference” and personally selected participant in Al Gore’s “The Climate Project.” I asked Sheila how she was chosen for the Climate Project – a training program for 1000 nationally recruited participants held in Nashville by Gore. Follow this link to read her response Sandra’a Showcase.

Recent articles in Science News have reported on medical findings very relevant to the city that never sleeps and the workforce required to feed that habit. Studies show that men who alternated between daytime and night shifts have triple the incidence of prostrate cancer. (To read more, refer to Vol. 170, p 195 of Science News.) Also eye-opening is the data demonstrating that women exposed to light during the night have reduced melatonin in their blood, supporting growth of breast tumors. (For more, see Vol 169, p 8 Science News.) If you work in those kind of conditions, it is even more critical to have regular medical checkups. You also might consider the potential benefits of supplementing melatonin. Melatonin has been reputed to help reduce cancer risk, but hard science has not yet committed.

For those readers who are interested in the latest developments in science, but don’t feel equipped to read Nature or Scientific American, Science News reports on all fields: astronomy, anthropology, behavior, biomedicine, botony, molecular biology, chemistry, earth science, environment & ecology, food & nutrtion, math & computers, paleobiology, physics, science & society, and technology. In other words, just about every field and its applications. They have a wonderful publication for students called Science News for Kids with articles geared to the younger mind and written in very understandable language. In fact, the beauty of Science News is that the language is kept to a level that allows the average person to penetrate what would otherwise be very dense material. www.sciencenews.org.

by guest contributor Cindy Joseph-Vogel

I have traveled all over the world and never have I been to such a wonderful resort as the Red Mountain Spa. It is in Las Vegas’ back yard, two hours away. It is a lush and beautiful paradise just north of St. George, Utah. We went for rest, relaxation, health and exercise, but we got so much more. It is hiking at its best (leave the make-up at home and bring hiking shoes) with treks for 1, 2 or 3 levels.

Exercise classes are scheduled all day long and are taught by experienced teachers. There is Tai Chi, Pilates, yoga, tours of the property, biking, horse back riding, kayaking, golf nearby, indoor and outdoor swimming pools and a Jacuzzi, massage therapists and featured speakers. Be sure to take all of the classes you can. We attended an Iridology class, which is the study of looking into ones eyes to determine your state of health. I especially learned a lot from Chef Dale’s class in food preparation and cooking tips. I thought I knew a lot but his tips were priceless. Did you know that 1 tablespoon of liquid bleach mixed with a quart of water makes a wonderful killer of botulism and is a must when working with raw chicken?

The other great tip he gave us was ask to inspect the kitchen when dining at a restaurant. The Red Mountain Spa’s kitchen is immaculate. The best is the food, geared to the healthy but will satisfy anyone’s taste. Try the variety of hummus that chef Dale presents, or be daring and have the Elk or Duck. Breakfast and lunch are buffet style is competitive to Vegas only healthier. The evening meal is fine dining at its best and served at your table by a wonderful staff, with Chef Dale over-seeing quality and presentation. I am a seeker of good food. I love the way the vegetarian cuisine makes you feel like you are dining on sinfully rich food when it is actually good for you.

The Spa is great for groups, singles and married. There were lots of ladies and their friends meeting here, from all over the world. We extended our stay for an extra night, not wanting to leave. Kim, our concierge was very helpful in assisting us, along with help in scheduling other adventures in the nearby area, such as Tuacahn "Broadway in the Desert" outdoor amphitheatre. "Cinderella" was wonderful. This place has it all and we can’t wait to return.

I took a lot of flack about my article on the FDA and drugs. The book I recommended by Kevin Trudeau, I was told, was written by a charlatan with no credentials other than he had made bucketsful of money selling himself as one of the gurus of the self-improvement age. Having made lots of dough promoting yourself, to my mind, demonstrates having a real good sense of what makes the world go round. Not to mention that all that money has given him the enviable advantage of true independence from the necessity of pleasing anyone except himself. I’m not sure he’s all that crazy when I read the new info coming out about Avandia.

In case you don’t watch TV, read the newspaper or catch the news online at MSN.com, Avandia is a Glaxo-SmithKline pharmaceutical for treatment of diabetes type 2 which causes a significant increase in risk for heart attack. The New England Journal of Medicine published its report on Mon May 21 which may have prompted the FDA to issue a “safety alert” citing potential significant risk of heart failure among Avandia users. These risks are reputedly between 30-43% over normal for heart attack and 64% for heart death. Significant indeed. And don’t forget that those with diabetes are already at high risk of heart failure as a result of the disease itself.

Avandia and Actos, from Japanense Takeda Pharmaceutical, are part of a class known as glitazones. Rezulin, also in that class, was pulled from the market in 2000 because of deaths from acute liver failure. Baycol, a statin lowering cholesterol, was pulled in 2001 because of sometimes fatal break down of muscle tissue. Vioxx, the anti-inflammatory and pain-killer, was pulled in 2004 due to increased risk of heart attacks and stroke. Bextra, another COX-2 inhibitor anti-inflammatory, was pulled in 2005 also due to increased heart disease and stroke. Are you starting to wonder if FDA approval is any guarantee that your prescription won’t cause more damage than good?

And we are faced with the same repeating questions since Vietnam, the tobacco industry cover-up, Watergate, Iraq etc etc etc: Who knew what and when?

If you are a thinking person, you might ask what else are you putting in your body, with your doctor’s, the FDA?’s and the pharmaceutical company’s recommendation that could kill you? Couple that with the number of meds that are advertised on any given Thursday night TV show and the scenario becomes frightening. Almost makes you yearn for the good old days when cigarettes and alcohol picked up the tab for our evening entertainment.

You can order Natural Cures “They” Don’t Want You To Know About from Amazon.com. and decide for yourself how crazy Trudeau is. I never buy anything 100%, but if he is only half right, you need to know about it.

I strive to make connections between people who might not otherwise find each other, and to bring events to a broader audience so that a diverse culture of all aspects of life can flourish here in a city too often characterized by the dark side. The light side, and I mean that in a spiritual sense, is nurtured by organizations like the Open Wisdom Institute which is participating in the Intentional Wellness Conference on June 2.

This all day 9 am -4 pm, “Extraordinary Day” event will be held at the Canyon Gate Country Club in Summerlin with the objective to empower you and connect you to your own healer within. It is being presented by Sheila Z Stirling, a spiritual life coach, healer and author of “Reading the Language of the Cosmos.” New Age, most definitely. For everyone, most definitely not. For the seeker and the spiritual pilgrim, definitely something to investigate. www.intentional-wellness.com

The Natural Solutions Foundation is claiming victory over the Big Pharmaceutical Companies (“Big Pharma“) and FDA assault on natural health care and supplements. 435,005 people used their site to submit comments to the FDA about the draft CAM (complementary and alternative medicine) Guidance. The FDA apparently first denied the request to extend the comment period, failed to update its site or its comment tally, then extended the comment period only to resind the extension. There were also problems with the HealthFreedomUSA site which was “interferred with” resulting in 252,521 people not being able to submit their comments. Natural Solutions Foundation worked day and night to make as many of those submittals manually as possible.

How much influence the massive internet response had is difficult to quantify, but the US Senate voted on May 2 – without a single dissenting voice – for S.1082 – “Enhancing Drug Safety and Innovation Act of 2007,” sponsored by Sen Richard (Dick) Durbin D-IL, as amended:

Sec X08. Rule of Construction
Nothing in this title (or an amendment made by this title) shall be construed to affect -
(1) The regulation of dietary supplements under the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act; or
(2) The adverse event reporting system for dietary supplement created under the Dietary Supplement and Nonprescription Durg Consumer Protection Act.

For more info see: Durbin Food Safety Amendment

There were many activists in this fight against FDA control of products that Big Pharma want eliminated from their competition, so no doubt there were more forces at work than the one internet action promoted by the Natural Solutions Foundation.
The following is an update to my article on FDA assault on Natural Health products and treatments. Excerpt from an email call to action.

It is still urgently important that you submit your comments to the FDA CAM (Complimentary and Alternative Modalities)

Comments end on <strike>April 30</strike> May 29.

As of this moment, 145,541 people have submitted their comments on this over reach by the FDA through our site! Good, but not good enough! We need to show the kind of strength that we have on this issue.

The last time people got this angry, we got the Dietary Supplements Health and Education Act (DSHEA, 1994) which gave us back the right to take any supplements we desire since they are classified as food and therefore recognized as safe.

A local company ChemNutra Inc. has been named in the contaminated pet food controversy. According to the Associated Press, as published Fri Apr 27 in the LVRJ (Las Vegas Review Journal), a Kansas pet food manufacturer Menu Foods Midwest Corp. recalled 60 million cans of pet food after 16 pets, mostly cats, died from the effects of eating the melamine-contaminated food. According to US News & World Report Apr 28, the offices of Menu Foods and ChemNutra Inc. were searched by FDA agents.

Evidence is mounting that the tainted pet food is more toxic to cats than dogs. Melamine has now been found in pig urine at a California pig farm.

Wheat glutten is used as filler in the pet food. ChemNutra imports the wheat glutten from a Chinese company which ChemNutra claims was represented as a reputable source for high quality nutritional ingredients and which provided apparent proof that its wheat gluten was safe. Melamine has been found in Chinese-originated wheat glutten, rice protein and corn glutten, all used as pet food ingredients.

Melamine is a chemical found in plastics, pesticides and sometimes fertilizers, certainly not approved for use in pet food by the US FDA. A leading theory is that the melamine was deliberately added to fake higher protein levels. The FDA has set up a website for concerned pet owners: www.fda.gov.

I don’t know who the author is so can’t give them the credit they deserve. Some say it’s an urban legend.???? But that’s really irrelevant cause the truth is there.
As an aside to the following, the American Heart Association states that for men or women: “Some heart attacks are sudden and intense – the ‘movie heart attack,’ where no one doubts what’s happening. But most heart attacks start slowly, with mild pain or discomfort.” The Association cautions that “the atypical heart attack happens to men too, which is why both genders need to remain alert to the onset of more subtle symptoms, such as back and jaw pain, nausea and indigestion.”
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Did you know that women rarely have the same dramatic symptoms that men have when experiencing heart attack?…you know, the sudden stabbing pain in the chest, the cold sweat, grabbing the chest & dropping to the floor that we see in the movies. Here is the story of one woman’s experience with a heart attack.

“I had a completely unexpected heart attack at about 10:30 pm with NO prior exertion, NO prior emotional trauma that one would suspect might’ve brought it on.
I was sitting all snugly & warm on a cold evening, with my purring cat in my lap, reading an interesting story my friend had sent me, and actually thinking,”A-A-h, this is the life, all cozy and warm in my soft, cushy Lazy Boy with my feet propped up.”

A moment later, I felt that awful sensation of indigestion, when you’ve been in a hurry and grabbed a bite of sandwich and washed it down with a dash of water, and that hurried bite seems to feel like you’ve swallowed a golf ball going down the esophagus in slow motion and it is most uncomfortable. You realize you shouldn’t have gulped it down so fast and needed to chew it more thoroughly and this time drink a glass of water to hasten its progress down to the stomach. This was my initial sensation—the only trouble was that I hadn’t taken a bite of anything since about 5:00 p.m.

“After that had seemed to subside, the next sensation was like little squeezing motions that seemed to be racing up my SPINE (hind-sight, it was probably my aorta spasming), gaining speed as they continued racing up and under my sternum (breast bone, where one presses rhythmically when administering CPR). This fascinating process continued on into my throat and branched out into both jaws.

“AHA!! NOW I stopped puzzling about what was happening–we all have read and/or heard about pain in the jaws being one of the signals of an MI (myocardial infarction) happening, haven’t we? I said aloud to myself and the cat, “Dear God, I think I’m having a heart attack !” I lowered the foot rest, dumping the cat from my lap, started to take a step and fell on the floor instead. I thought to myself “If this is a heart attack I shouldn’t be walking into the next room where the phone is or anywhere else…….but, on the other hand, if I don’t, nobody will know that I need help, and if I wait any longer I may not be able to get up in moment.”

“I pulled myself up with the arms of the chair, walked slowly into the next room and dialed the Paramedics… I told her I thought I was having a heart attack due to the pressure building under the sternum and radiating into my jaws. I didn’t feel hysterical or afraid, just stating the facts. She said she was sending the Paramedics over immediately, asked if the front door was near to me, and if so, to unbolt the door and then lie down on the floor where they could see me when they came in.

“I then laid down on the floor as instructed and lost consciousness, as I don’t remember the medics coming in, their examination, lifting me onto a gurney or getting me into their ambulance, or hearing the call they made to St. Jude ER on the way, but I did briefly awaken when we arrived and saw that the Cardiologist was already there in his surgical blues and cap, helping the medics pull my stretcher out of the ambulance. He was bending over me asking questions (probably something like “Have you taken any medications?”) but I couldn’t make my mind interpret what he was saying, or form an answer, and nodded off again, not waking up until the Cardiologist and partner had already threaded the teeny Angiogram balloon up my femoral artery into the aorta and into my heart where they installed 2 side by side stents to hold open my right coronary artery.

“I know it sounds like all my thinking and actions at home must have taken at least 20-30 minutes before calling the Paramedics, but actually it took perhaps 45 minutes before the call, and both the fire station and St. Jude are only minutes away from my home, and my Cardiologist was already to go to the OR in his scrubs and get going on restarting my heart (which had stopped somewhere between my arrival and the procedure) and installing the stents!

“Why have I written all of this to you with so much detail? Because I want all of you who are so important in my life to know what I learned first hand.”

1. Be aware that something very different is happening in your body not the usual men’s symptoms, but inexplicable things happening (until my sternum and jaws got into the act ). It is said that many more women than men die of their first (and last) MI because they didn’t know they were having one, and commonly mistake it as indigestion, take some Maalox or other anti-heartburn preparation, and go to bed, hoping they’ll feel better in the morning when they wake up….which doesn’t happen. My female friends, your symptoms might not be exactly like mine, so I advise you to call the Paramedics if ANYTHING is unpleasantly happening that you’ve not felt before. It is better to have a “false alarm” visitation than to risk your life guessing what it might be!

2. Note that I said “Call the Paramedics”. Ladies, TIME IS OF THE ESSENCE! Do NOT try to drive yourself to the ER–you’re a hazard to others on the road, and so is your panicked husband who will be speeding and looking anxiously at what’s happening with you instead of the road.
Do NOT call your doctor–he doesn’t know where you live and if it’s at night you won’t reach him anyway, and if it’s daytime, his assistants(or answering service) will tell you to call the Paramedics. He doesn’t carry the equipment in his car that you need to be saved! The Paramedics do, principally OXYGEN that you need ASAP. Your Dr. will be notified later.

3. Don’t assume it couldn’t be a heart attack because you have a normal cholesterol count. Research has discovered that a cholesterol elevated reading is rarely the cause of an MI (unless it’s unbelievably high,and/or accompanied by high blood pressure.) MI’s are usually caused by long-term stress and inflammation in the body, which dumps all sorts of deadly hormones into your system to sludge things up in there. Pain in the jaw can wake you from a sound sleep. Let’s be careful and be aware. The more we know, the better chance we could survive…

The FDA is a powerful government organization that controls our access to prescription and non-prescription drugs. The FDA wants to control access to natural health products like vitamins, minerals and herbs – along with natural health therapies of all sorts. If you do your research, I think you will find that the FDA is too closely involved with the pharmaceutical industry to make impartial decisions about your healthcare. It’s all about the money when it comes to big business and very little about you. I am urging you to educate yourself and I am urging you to participate in an email petition to help stop this dangerous attempt to restrict our access to alternative forms of medicine and treatment of disease. There is so much information available today about the dangers of the side effects of pharmaceuticals, and so much new information about the curative powers and benefits of natural healing that we can’t allow our choice of treatment to be limited to what the FDA controls and the pharmaceutical companies profit from. I don’t have dogs but I have many friends who do, and I know the topic is “life relevant” for them.

The latest that I can find is that one source of the melamine contamination originates with an imported rice protein concentrate from China. The shipment was offloaded during the week of Apr 2 by Wilbur-Ellis of San Francisco. Wilbur Ellis notified the FDA’s Center of Veterinary Medicine on Apr 15 that there was possible contamination problems.

The recall includes Natural Balance Pet Foods: Venison and Brown Rice canned and dry, Venison and Brown Rice dog treats and Venison and Green Pea dry cat food. resource: www.emxhealth.com

There also seems to be a problem with melamine-contaminated corn and wheat gluten imported from China. Check out the latest (morning of Apr 23) at www.nationaledger.com.

I attended an intriguing talk today at the West Sahara Library featuring Dr. Jhampa Kalsang, a doctor of Tibetan Astro (astrology) Medicine. Dr. Kalsang studied and then instructed at the Dalai Lama’s School of Tibetan Medicine in Dharamsala, India. He moved to Europe in the early 90’s and taught workshops in several countries including Germany, France, Italy, Spain and Holland. In the late 90’s he was asked to speak at an International Tibetan Astro Medicine Conference in Washington DC sponsored by Harvard Medical School. That speaking engagement led to a year contract speaking at Princeton, Yale, Columbia and Harvard. He now lives in San Diego where he conducts seminars with Tibetan scholars that are non-sectarian and include all schools of Tibetan Buddhism. This is the second time he has been in Las Vegas and intends to visit once a year, perhaps establishing a school if there is enough interest.

The practice of Tibetan Astro Medicine is more than 3,000 years old. As there was no written language until the 7th century, the knowledge and practice was passed verbally from mother practitioners to daughters and fathers to sons. He recounted the tale of a popular and powerful king who ruled over a vast kingdom extending from Manali, India deep into modern day China. A portion of his vast wealth came from taxes imposed upon travelers of the Silk Road as they passed through ancient Tibet. The king was desirous of a written alphabet, so sent his sons and a minister to India to learn Sanskrit. All died from the extreme heat of India save the minister, who returned to develop the script that is in use today with Tibetan.

The tenants of the Tibetan practice of medicine are based on several factors, including the astrology of the patient, which is determined by the time of birth. It is vital to understand the cycles of life; timing is everything. Also important is the consideration of climate and diet. Diet must be adjusted according to the season. In fact, Dr. Kalsang proposes that the change of seasons is beneficial to good health and well-being. He cautioned especially against very cold drinks in a hot climate, disturbing the digestion. In fact, he attributed a possible cause of our epidemic of obesity to the intake of such volumes of cold drink with our meals. Diet is the number one consideration in Tibetan medicine. The food you eat is “energy you are injecting into your body.” It does you no good to take supplements or medicines without proper nutrition. Only good food can make you healthy. He quoted Aristotle as saying, “The best medicine is food.”

Tibetans utilize herbs for treatment of disease, even kidney stones can be broken up and passed in the urine by the intake of the correct herbs. Dr. Kalsang was quick to instruct that herbs are never given alone, but always blended, helping to avoid the toxicity that can occur even with natural products. Tibetan medicine and spirituality are closely connected. Medical treatments are always energized by mantras.

Diagnosis is by examining external parts of the body to reflect internal weakness. For example, the tongue is connected to the heart; certain conditions of the tongue can indicate heart problems. The Tibetan doctor will look at the coloring in the whites of the eyes; he will test the urine. Most importantly, he takes the pulse, but with a woman, it is first the left, then right, and for the man, the opposite.

According to Dr. Kalsang, the main cause for cancer is stress, with the ingestion of chemicals in our environment as second. He recommends yoga and meditation, and taking time out of the day to relax. He dismisses the excuse that one can be too busy to cook or to meditate. There are 24 hours in every day, he says. Do not tell me you cannot find one hour. Our society is so stressed that people cannot sleep on the most expensive of mattresses, while the poor snore loudly and sleep soundly on rags in the railroad station in Delhi.

The Tibetans see astrology as providing a blueprint for life. You would not construct a building without a blueprint, so why would you plan your life without one? It is very important for them to ascertain the time of death so they can tailor their life to use the time wisely. Dr. Kalsang advises that although money is not bad and we all need to pay our bills, one should not “over-attach” to it. He does enjoy sending extra dollars to India to help his relatives and, most important to him, to maintain his Tibetan store in San Diego which provides Tibetan goods and medicines to Tibetan refugees. Having more than you need translates to the ability to help others.

Dr. Kalsang is associated with the Buddhist community in Las Vegas. For more information about his next visit or Buddhist activities, call 702-219-1191. Also visit the website of the Lohan School of Shaolin. www.lvlohans.com

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Dr. Kalsang will be available Sun Mar 25 for Personal Astrological Readings. This will help you with that blueprint of life I talked about earlier in the article. Jhampa, as he is known to his associates, will give counsel and recommendations for appropriate courses of action and antidotes to alleviate obstacles. Necessary data: Full Name, Date of Birth, Time of Birth, Place of Birth. The cost for a personal consultation, including tape is $130. Please call Sveta 619-819-9276 or email svetala@gmail.com. This is an amazing opportunity to have a personal reading from one of the world’s leaders in Tibetan Medicine and Astrology.

The Edwards family’s challenges underscore the importance of just such a forum on our national crisis in healthcare.

The Forum will be at UNLV Cox Pavillion and is by invitation only. As expected, every seat will be occupied. If you are not one of the lucky chosen, you can follow the discussion from 9:00 am-2:00 pm by live video stream at ThinkProgress.org. You will need RealPlayer in order to view it: www.real.com. You can also submit a question to any/all of the candidates, to be processed by a panel of health care experts. Selected questions will be asked of the candidate by the moderator, Karen Tumulty of Time magazine, during the Q & A section. The event is co-sponsored by the Center for American Progress Action Fund and the Service Employees International Union (SEIU). You can read about the SEIU and its fight for quality, affordable healthcare on their website: www.seiu.org

You hear a lot of buzz today about the benefits of drinking red wine and according to Science News, Dec 2, 2006, there seems to be some scientific basis for it. But researchers from Scotland have shown that not all red wines are equal. Apparently wines with the highest concentrations of polymeric procyanidins are the most beneficial for cardiovascular health. These compounds are found among wine??????? tannins. Wines with the highest concentrations of these specific tannins are grown and consumed in Southwestern France and on the Italian island of Sardinia. Census data for cities throughout France showed that those living in the southwest have the longest life spans. This news might give French wines a boost in a market saturated with wines from California, South America and Australia.

The polymeric procyanidins inhibit the body??????? production of enotehlin-1, a compound which constricts blood vessels. Most doctors agree that narrowed blood vessels are a contributor to heart attacks and stroke. Polymeric procyanidins belong to a larger group called polyphenolics, which have been shown in some studies to help diabetes, obesity and some neurological diseases. This is more good news for consumption of red wine, although the medical community hurries to advise us that one-two glasses a day is recommended, not the ??? bottle to 1 bottle regularly consumed by the avid wine drinkers and connoisseurs I know.

The high concentration of tannins is a by-product of the traditional wine-making techniques of those two regions of France and Italy. The article suggests that other wine-producing regions might find advantage in re-examining their production techniques as more health-conscious consumers become aware of the benefits of sipping wines with high tannin concentrations.
