New Blog for Dudes (and Babes) who love growing and living green.

If you are looking for fun and information all in one place, you should check out this new blog TheGardenDude.com dedicated to sustainable vegetable agriculture in your own back (and front) yard. David is The Garden Dude from California who has perfected, or at least is on the road to mastering, the art of growing veggies totally organically in pots. Not that kind of pot!

He’s posted recipes and videos on cooking up these veggies and other healthy stuff like fresh fish. Being a true California Dude, David has music to really get you in the Dude Mood. Go to the resources tab on his site and select “veggie songs.”

Choose from: We are the Vegetables by INXS, Vegetables by Radiohead, Love you Like a Fresh Vegetable by Tony Rebel and Vega-tables by the incomparable Brian Wilson. Are you are like me, not so young anymore, but struggling hard not to be irrelevant? Does your heart race and brain fog when faced with conquering new technologies and accepting invitations to join Hi5, Linked In, Plaxo, Facebook etc? And now there is the fastest growing of all – “Twitter.”

To Tweet or not to Tweet? That is the question. Are you trying to decide? Do you really want the world to know what you are doing via Facebook? What’s wrong with old-fashioned email? Are you overwhelmed? Do you fell too old to keep up (or catch up)?

Do you ask yourself – “How is this going to improve my life?” Is this worth the TIME? Don’t I already have email, text messaging, cell phone and a blog? How much technology do I NEED anyway?

Do you feel like the Universe is speeding away from you? You’re not alone. Take 5 minutes out and watch this You-Tube called “Shift Happens” developed after the 2008 Rome conference: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jpEnFwiqdx8.

When you finish, note it doesn’t even mention Twitter which has grown exponentially since the 2008 meeting in Rome happened. Before you ask, “what meeting” – that part is less clear. My research shows there were many world meetings in Rome in 2008. I have posed the question to the U-Tube site. But whatever the meeting, the info in the U-Tube doesn’t set off any alarms on my “BS” detector.

Blue Martini is local hot spot in Vegas

Wednesday night and the Blue Martini is jammed. What would it be like if there were no recession? It’s refreshing to see high heels, sexy dresses and crisp shirts. You get so tired of the slobby tourists on the Strip with their shorts, sloppy T-shirts and sandals. This is Las Vegas, for *** sakes!

The Blue Martini, across from the Rave Movie Experience, at the top of the escalator and to the left, at the west end of Town Square, is pulsating with feverish energy. Three giant bars anchor this sprawling hot spot, one with outdoor patio, one with live music stage and the last secreted in the far back with cozy alcoves for tête á têes. With an outdoor terrace that stretches on two sides, there is always quick access to fresh air and open space. The bathrooms are also buried in the back, which can seem like quite a trek if you don’t plan ahead.

The servers are sweet and sexy in their powder blue bodices, a vague reference to French cancan and Playboy bunny. The bartenders, handsome young lads, pour genereous martini’s and are well trained to keep customers happy. In fact, the service everywhere is excellent - friendly and casual without the pretensions of the Strip.

The live music in the middle bar is rock sold dance quality, although there is no dance floor per se. But who can sit still to Santana, although the average age of the dancers is way older than the sitters. Do we just get freer as we age, or don’t people know to dance any more?

Happy Hour serves $6 martini’s (regular $12) with beers about half that. The food menu is diverse and the portions designed to set in the middle of the table and share.

Although most of the crowd is well under 40, you won’t feel ridiculous if you could be their parents. It’s a great spot and one I hate to write about because I’d still like to get a seat at the bar or a table when I go. But if you are wondering where locals go – “to see and be seen” – it’s Blue Martini.

Genevieve, one of my favorite local vocalists, has been nominated by the Black Music Academy Association Of America selection committee of music executives, radio station programmers, music journalists, fellow musicians and entertainers to receive a Black Music Award. Genevieve’s name was submitted by peers and music professionals for great contribution to the legacy of music. The American Black Music Awards formal “white-tie” attire event will be held Sun, Aug 26 at Cashman Theater complete with red carpet for nominees, honorees, special guests and celebrity hosts. Health Risks for Graveyard Shift

Recent articles in Science News have reported on medical findings very relevant to the city that never sleeps and the workforce required to feed that habit. Studies show that men who alternated between daytime and night shifts have triple the incidence of prostrate cancer. (To read more, refer to Vol. 170, p 195 of Science News.) Also eye-opening is the data demonstrating that women exposed to light during the night have reduced melatonin in their blood, supporting growth of breast tumors. (For more, see Vol 169, p 8 Science News.) If you work in those kind of conditions, it is even more critical to have regular medical checkups. You also might consider the potential benefits of supplementing melatonin. Melatonin has been reputed to help reduce cancer risk, but hard science has not yet committed.

For those readers who are interested in the latest developments in science, but don’t feel equipped to read Nature or Scientific American, Science News reports on all fields: astronomy, anthropology, behavior, biomedicine, botony, molecular biology, chemistry, earth science, environment & ecology, food & nutrtion, math & computers, paleobiology, physics, science & society, and technology. In other words, just about every field and its applications. They have a wonderful publication for students called Science News for Kids with articles geared to the younger mind and written in very understandable language. Red Mountain Spa – Top Ten by Conde Nast

I have traveled all over the world and never have I been to such a wonderful resort as the Red Mountain Spa. It is in Las Vegas’ back yard, two hours away. It is a lush and beautiful paradise just north of St. George, Utah. We went for rest, relaxation, health and exercise, but we got so much more. It is hiking at its best (leave the make-up at home and bring hiking shoes) with treks for 1, 2 or 3 levels.

Exercise classes are scheduled all day long and are taught by experienced teachers. There is Tai Chi, Pilates, yoga, tours of the property, biking, horse back riding, kayaking, golf nearby, indoor and outdoor swimming pools and a Jacuzzi, massage therapists and featured speakers. Be sure to take all of the classes you can. We attended an Iridology class, which is the study of looking into ones eyes to determine your state of health. I especially learned a lot from Chef Dale’s class in food preparation and cooking tips. I thought I knew a lot but his tips were priceless. Did you know that 1 tablespoon of liquid bleach mixed with a quart of water makes a wonderful killer of botulism and is a must when working with raw chicken?

The other great tip he gave us was ask to inspect the kitchen when dining at a restaurant. The Red Mountain Spa’s kitchen is immaculate. The best is the food, geared to the healthy but will satisfy anyone’s taste. Try the variety of hummus that chef Dale presents, or be daring and have the Elk or Duck. Breakfast and lunch are buffet style is competitive to Vegas only healthier. The evening meal is fine dining at its best and served at your table by a wonderful staff, with Chef Dale over-seeing quality and presentation. I am a seeker of good food. I love the way the vegetarian cuisine makes you feel like you are dining on sinfully rich food when it is actually good for you.

The Spa is great for groups, singles and married. There were lots of ladies and their friends meeting here, from all over the world. We extended our stay for an extra night, not wanting to leave. Kim, our concierge was very helpful in assisting us, along with help in scheduling other adventures in the nearby area, such as Tuacahn "Broadway in the Desert" outdoor amphitheatre. "Cinderella" was wonderful. This place has it all and we can’t wait to return.

Thursday June 21 is the summer solstice, or first day of summer. The hours of daylight are longest – the night is shortest - the sun’s path (sic) is directly over the Tropic of Cancer. The Temple of Goddess Spirituality will celebrate at their Temple to Sekhmet in the desert near Cactus Springs; they say that all are invited to pray, meditate and connect with the Divine. The summer solstice is highly celebrated in the northern countries of Europe with bonfires and parties over all the lands. No tradition for that here in the US, whether from the Puritan influence or just too many different people from too many different places. The custom never seemed to catch on. Too bad. I had a fabulous time both in Cornwall with the lighting of bonfires on every hilltop, and in Denmark where you take to the sea and sail along the coast to see the hundreds of bonfires and revelers celebrating this ancient rite.

Update on CineVegas (La Proxima Ola)

I’ve viewed five films so far at the 2007 CineVegas Film Festival happening at Brendan Theatres at the Palms, and have been concentrating on films by directors making their debuts with either first or second releases, especially foreign language. Part of the mission of CineVegas is to provide the opportunity to experience film you would not otherwise see in Las Vegas (or few other American venues.) The films are open to the public. More info is at the website listed at the end of this article.

“I Don’t Want to Sleep Alone” is set in Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia) and directed by Tsai Ming-Liang. I must give this a mixed review in that the story of a mattress, two men and two women and the noisy, sweaty, gritty backstreets of Kuala Lumpur is intriguing to a point. But it shifts abruptly and uncomfortably at the end of the film from stark realism to misty surrealism. Acting is suberb. As a speedy Westerner you find yourself slowly winding down to the pace of the sultry tropics. Others might find the realism appealing, but personally, I don’t enjoy watching a film that focuses so much on bodily functions. Original version with English subtitles.

“Viva” by Director Anna Biller (who also starred) was set in the swinging 70’s when nudism and free love were synonomous with California. Once you get past the fun part of totally 70’s decor, dress and all the kitsch of the era, the film is just plain silly. Billed as a tribute to vintage sexploitation films, I felt a bit exploited as audience. Cast and Director present for Q&A. American.

The Festival is also introducing “La Proxima Ola” (The Next Wave), films by the new cinema mexicana which hold promise for a fascinating surrealist expression particular to the Spanish mind. Some of the films were more successful than others, all have been technically excellent with a remarkable authenticity both in acting and art direction.

“Once Upon a Time Maria” (Eros Una Vez Maria) is by first time feature film director Jesus Magana Vazquez. It is a stream of consciousness erotic saga that moves from fragmented memories of the various (and many) Marias of the protagonist’s life. Replete with sexual content and interesting score of original jazz and electronic music, the film is shot sometimes in black and white, otherwise in muted palette, sometimes with digital and sometimes 16 mm film. Jesus is obviously experimenting. The director was on hand for Q&A; he charmingly admitted that the film has no message and that filmmaking for him at this stage is a “game.” Spanish with English subtitles.

“Morirse En Domingo“’s (English title “Never on Sunday“) should really be “To Die on a Sunday” or more aptly “Never Die on a Sunday.” This is director Daniel Gruener’s second film, the first ten long years ago was a Mexican horror film “Sobrenatural.” This time round Gruener tackles an unbelievable tale of the death of a beloved familiy member and the odyssey of his body and his nephew as they are caught in one intrigue following another – all the more arresting because it is based on a true story. This film codifies that truth is indeed stranger than fiction. If you have firsthand experience with Mexico you’ll even more appreciate the inside look at the underbelly of Mexican life with its flawed and complex textures. Gruener is a master of tension and mixes just enough surrealism to give the film that special Latin flavor. Cinematography, musical score and acting are superb. Gruener was also on hand for Q&A. Spanish with English subtitles.

I don’t want to say that I have left the best for last, because I thoroughly enjoyed Gruener’s film. But “Malos Habitos” or “Bad Habits” by director Simon Brass was such a visual delight and so exquisitely produced that it remains my favorite so far. The entwined tales of women with eating disorders is set in another Mexico from Gruener – this is the Mexico of privilege beside the Mexico of fervent Catholicism. Food is a tool, a symbol of weakness, of power, of pleasure. Brass comes from a background of directing commercials and he has all the requisite skill to produce breaktaking dream-visions which combine the baroque palette of Velaquez with the imagery of surrealists like Dali. He has assembled a wonderful cast of natural actors who lead us most convincingly (including extreme weight loss and gain) along their excruciating journeys. Brass was also available for a Q&A session after the film. Spanish with English subtitles.

This is a taste of high calibre film coming from our southern neighbors. The directors exhibit a remarkable ability to combine grittiness with humor, pathos with eros while telling a good story with finely-drawn characters of great believability. Despite the melodramatic cirumstances of complicated lives, our glimpes into the bottomless depths are achieved by subtle and often brief dialogues, only rarely punctuated by intense emotional outburst. I am left with a hunger for more.

FDA and Drugs That Kill

I took a lot of flack about my article on the FDA and drugs. The book I recommended by Kevin Trudeau, I was told, was written by a charlatan with no credentials other than he had made bucketsful of money selling himself as one of the gurus of the self-improvement age. Having made lots of dough promoting yourself, to my mind, demonstrates having a real good sense of what makes the world go round. Not to mention that all that money has given him the enviable advantage of true independence from the necessity of pleasing anyone except himself. I’m not sure he’s all that crazy when I read the new info coming out about Avandia.

In case you don’t watch TV, read the newspaper or catch the news online at MSN.com, Avandia is a Glaxo-SmithKline pharmaceutical for treatment of diabetes type 2 which causes a significant increase in risk for heart attack. The New England Journal of Medicine published its report on Mon May 21 which may have prompted the FDA to issue a “safety alert” citing potential significant risk of heart failure among Avandia users. These risks are reputedly between 30-43% over normal for heart attack and 64% for heart death. Significant indeed. And don’t forget that those with diabetes are already at high risk of heart failure as a result of the disease itself.

Avandia and Actos, from Japanense Takeda Pharmaceutical, are part of a class known as glitazones. Rezulin, also in that class, was pulled from the market in 2000 because of deaths from acute liver failure. Baycol, a statin lowering cholesterol, was pulled in 2001 because of sometimes fatal break down of muscle tissue. Vioxx, the anti-inflammatory and pain-killer, was pulled in 2004 due to increased risk of heart attacks and stroke. Bextra, another COX-2 inhibitor anti-inflammatory, was pulled in 2005 also due to increased heart disease and stroke. Are you starting to wonder if FDA approval is any guarantee that your prescription won’t cause more damage than good?

And we are faced with the same repeating questions since Vietnam, the tobacco industry cover-up, Watergate, Iraq etc etc etc: Who knew what and when?

If you are a thinking person, you might ask what else are you putting in your body, with your doctor’s, the FDA?’s and the pharmaceutical company’s recommendation that could kill you? Couple that with the number of meds that are advertised on any given Thursday night TV show and the scenario becomes frightening. Almost makes you yearn for the good old days when cigarettes and alcohol picked up the tab for our evening entertainment.

Last night at the Rio Brasilia Ballroom epitomized the glitz and glamour of Las Vegas of your fantasy. Thousands and thousands of roses nested in Liberace-style candelabras graced the circular tables draped in crushed red velvet. “Everything’s coming up roses” was the theme and certainly there was a bumper crop – but more of green ($) than red. Raffles and silent and live auctions offered gourmet dinners and spa weekends – some prizes tintillating elegant dinners for multiple guests served by top chefs in your own home. Larry Hart’s Botannica did the decor and floral displays with marvelous theatrical aplomb, succeeding in balancing extravagence with good taste. Grammy winner Hart also sang. Is there no end to talent in some people?

Chefs for Kids is a non profit supported by the Fraternity of Executive Chefs of Las Vegas with the lofty goal of eliminating malnutrition and hunger through education and awareness. The Natural Solutions Foundation is claiming victory over the Big Pharmaceutical Companies (“Big Pharma“) and FDA assault on natural health care and supplements. 435,005 people used their site to submit comments to the FDA about the draft CAM (complementary and alternative medicine) Guidance. The FDA apparently first denied the request to extend the comment period, failed to update its site or its comment tally, then extended the comment period only to resind the extension. There were also problems with the HealthFreedomUSA site which was “interferred with” resulting in 252,521 people not being able to submit their comments. Natural Solutions Foundation worked day and night to make as many of those submittals manually as possible.

How much influence the massive internet response had is difficult to quantify, but the US Senate voted on May 2 – without a single dissenting voice – for S.1082 – “Enhancing Drug Safety and Innovation Act of 2007,” sponsored by Sen Richard (Dick) Durbin D-IL, as amended:

Sec X08. Rule of Construction
Nothing in this title (or an amendment made by this title) shall be construed to affect -
(1) The regulation of dietary supplements under the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act; or
(2) The adverse event reporting system for dietary supplement created under the Dietary Supplement and Nonprescription Durg Consumer Protection Act.

More on Pet Food, Melamine & the FDA

A local company ChemNutra Inc. has been named in the contaminated pet food controversy. According to the Associated Press, as published Fri Apr 27 in the LVRJ (Las Vegas Review Journal), a Kansas pet food manufacturer Menu Foods Midwest Corp. recalled 60 million cans of pet food after 16 pets, mostly cats, died from the effects of eating the melamine-contaminated food. According to US News & World Report Apr 28, the offices of Menu Foods and ChemNutra Inc. were searched by FDA agents.

Evidence is mounting that the tainted pet food is more toxic to cats than dogs. Melamine has now been found in pig urine at a California pig farm.

Wheat glutten is used as filler in the pet food. ChemNutra imports the wheat glutten from a Chinese company which ChemNutra claims was represented as a reputable source for high quality nutritional ingredients and which provided apparent proof that its wheat gluten was safe. Melamine has been found in Chinese-originated wheat glutten, rice protein and corn glutten, all used as pet food ingredients.

Melamine is a chemical found in plastics, pesticides and sometimes fertilizers, certainly not approved for use in pet food by the US FDA. A leading theory is that the melamine was deliberately added to fake higher protein levels. The FDA has set up a website for concerned pet owners: www.fda.gov.

Female Heart Attacks – Different & more Deadly?

As an aside to the following, the American Heart Association states that for men or women: “Some heart attacks are sudden and intense – the ‘movie heart attack,’ where no one doubts what’s happening. But most heart attacks start slowly, with mild pain or discomfort.” The Association cautions that “the atypical heart attack happens to men too, which is why both genders need to remain alert to the onset of more subtle symptoms, such as back and jaw pain, nausea and indigestion.”

Did you know that women rarely have the same dramatic symptoms that men have when experiencing heart attack?…you know, the sudden stabbing pain in the chest, the cold sweat, grabbing the chest & dropping to the floor that we see in the movies. Here is the story of one woman’s experience with a heart attack.

“I had a completely unexpected heart attack at about 10:30 pm with NO prior exertion, NO prior emotional trauma that one would suspect might’ve brought it on.
I was sitting all snugly & warm on a cold evening, with my purring cat in my lap, reading an interesting story my friend had sent me, and actually thinking,”A-A-h, this is the life, all cozy and warm in my soft, cushy Lazy Boy with my feet propped up.”

A moment later, I felt that awful sensation of indigestion, when you’ve been in a hurry and grabbed a bite of sandwich and washed it down with a dash of water, and that hurried bite seems to feel like you’ve swallowed a golf ball going down the esophagus in slow motion and it is most uncomfortable. You realize you shouldn’t have gulped it down so fast and needed to chew it more thoroughly and this time drink a glass of water to hasten its progress down to the stomach. This was my initial sensation—the only trouble was that I hadn’t taken a bite of anything since about 5:00 p.m.

“After that had seemed to subside, the next sensation was like little squeezing motions that seemed to be racing up my SPINE (hind-sight, it was probably my aorta spasming), gaining speed as they continued racing up and under my sternum (breast bone, where one presses rhythmically when administering CPR). This fascinating process continued on into my throat and branched out into both jaws.

“AHA!! NOW I stopped puzzling about what was happening–we all have read and/or heard about pain in the jaws being one of the signals of an MI (myocardial infarction) happening, haven’t we? I said aloud to myself and the cat, “Dear God, I think I’m having a heart attack !” I lowered the foot rest, dumping the cat from my lap, started to take a step and fell on the floor instead. I thought to myself “If this is a heart attack I shouldn’t be walking into the next room where the phone is or anywhere else…….but, on the other hand, if I don’t, nobody will know that I need help, and if I wait any longer I may not be able to get up in moment.”

“I pulled myself up with the arms of the chair, walked slowly into the next room and dialed the Paramedics… I told her I thought I was having a heart attack due to the pressure building under the sternum and radiating into my jaws. I didn’t feel hysterical or afraid, just stating the facts. She said she was sending the Paramedics over immediately, asked if the front door was near to me, and if so, to unbolt the door and then lie down on the floor where they could see me when they came in.

“I then laid down on the floor as instructed and lost consciousness, as I don’t remember the medics coming in, their examination, lifting me onto a gurney or getting me into their ambulance, or hearing the call they made to St. Jude ER on the way, but I did briefly awaken when we arrived and saw that the Cardiologist was already there in his surgical blues and cap, helping the medics pull my stretcher out of the ambulance. He was bending over me asking questions (probably something like “Have you taken any medications?”) but I couldn’t make my mind interpret what he was saying, or form an answer, and nodded off again, not waking up until the Cardiologist and partner had already threaded the teeny Angiogram balloon up my femoral artery into the aorta and into my heart where they installed 2 side by side stents to hold open my right coronary artery.

“I know it sounds like all my thinking and actions at home must have taken at least 20-30 minutes before calling the Paramedics, but actually it took perhaps 45 minutes before the call, and both the fire station and St. Jude are only minutes away from my home, and my Cardiologist was already to go to the OR in his scrubs and get going on restarting my heart (which had stopped somewhere between my arrival and the procedure) and installing the stents!

1. Be aware that something very different is happening in your body not the usual men’s symptoms, but inexplicable things happening (until my sternum and jaws got into the act ). It is said that many more women than men die of their first (and last) MI because they didn’t know they were having one, and commonly mistake it as indigestion, take some Maalox or other anti-heartburn preparation, and go to bed, hoping they’ll feel better in the morning when they wake up….which doesn’t happen. My female friends, your symptoms might not be exactly like mine, so I advise you to call the Paramedics if ANYTHING is unpleasantly happening that you’ve not felt before. It is better to have a “false alarm” visitation than to risk your life guessing what it might be!

2. Note that I said “Call the Paramedics”. Ladies, TIME IS OF THE ESSENCE! Do NOT try to drive yourself to the ER–you’re a hazard to others on the road, and so is your panicked husband who will be speeding and looking anxiously at what’s happening with you instead of the road.
Do NOT call your doctor–he doesn’t know where you live and if it’s at night you won’t reach him anyway, and if it’s daytime, his assistants(or answering service) will tell you to call the Paramedics. He doesn’t carry the equipment in his car that you need to be saved! The Paramedics do, principally OXYGEN that you need ASAP. Your Dr. will be notified later.

3. Don’t assume it couldn’t be a heart attack because you have a normal cholesterol count. Research has discovered that a cholesterol elevated reading is rarely the cause of an MI (unless it’s unbelievably high,and/or accompanied by high blood pressure.) MI’s are usually caused by long-term stress and inflammation in the body, which dumps all sorts of deadly hormones into your system to sludge things up in there. Pain in the jaw can wake you from a sound sleep. Let’s be careful and be aware. The more we know, the better chance we could survive…

FDA assault on natural health choices

The FDA is a powerful government organization that controls our access to prescription and non-prescription drugs. The FDA wants to control access to natural health products like vitamins, minerals and herbs – along with natural health therapies of all sorts. If you do your research, I think you will find that the FDA is too closely involved with the pharmaceutical industry to make impartial decisions about your healthcare. It’s all about the money when it comes to big business and very little about you. Pet Food Recall

This cartoon came to me through email. I don’t have dogs but I have many friends who do, and I know the topic is “life relevant” for them.

The latest that I can find is that one source of the melamine contamination originates with an imported rice protein concentrate from China. The shipment was offloaded during the week of Apr 2 by Wilbur-Ellis of San Francisco. Wilbur Ellis notified the FDA’s Center of Veterinary Medicine on Apr 15 that there was possible contamination problems.

The recall includes Natural Balance Pet Foods: Venison and Brown Rice canned and dry, Venison and Brown Rice dog treats and Venison and Green Pea dry cat food. resource: www.emxhealth.com

Ladies Lost Weekend

This is a art retreat for the ladies (and their kids, if they want) sponsored by the Goldwell Open Air Museum in Rhyolite NV. The weekend activity is to site and restore a couch covered in tile and mosaic designed by German artist Sofie Siegman. The result of an artist residency at the Lied Discovery Children’s Museum in Las Vegas, the couch was donated to the Goldwell Open Air Museum which wants to provide visitors a resting place with a view across the Amargosa Valley and the Museum’s sculpture park. May 4-May 6.
The weekend is $50 ($25 a day) which includes meals on Sat and Sun, some mementos, and best of all, a Saturday night soak at Bailey’s Hot Springs. There is lodging and camping in nearby Beatty.
