California Farmers Market – SLO style

There is nothing as beautiful as a ripe organic tomato. Unless it’s the bright lights of the Las Vegas Strip. I mean, truly, it is a really difficult choice. Luckily, in my life, I don’t have to choose. Right now while Vegas is blistering hot – and few places can blister like Vegas – I’ll take my cool days and chilly nights among the fresh produce of the the mini Strip of San Luis Obispo (SLO), CA, otherwise known as Higuera or Thursday Farmers Market.

Food vendors peddling cuisine as far ranging as Mediterranean, Italian and Chinese line both sides of street blocked off to cars to create a Thursday evening “walking street.”

Most famous for charcoal broiled ribs, chicken, trip tip and garlic bread, it is a mandatory experience to eat on the curb or find a spot on the steps.

One end of the street fair is a true Farmers Market with a bounty of produce and flowers from the County and surrounds.

Interspersed among the food vendors are booths touting services from temporary tatoos to promotion of local clubs and action committees.

There is the excitement of a medieval fair, complete with musicians for every taste – and puppet shows for children of all ages.

Everywhere you see evidence of the earnestly environmental California mentality. There’s a special parking lot for bicycles and organic fare is the norm.

From religion to sunflowers – it’s all there.

Chef’s for Kids Gala Success

Last night at the Rio Brasilia Ballroom epitomized the glitz and glamour of Las Vegas of your fantasy. Thousands and thousands of roses nested in Liberace-style candelabras graced the circular tables draped in crushed red velvet. “Everything’s coming up roses” was the theme and certainly there was a bumper crop – but more of green ($) than red. Raffles and silent and live auctions offered gourmet dinners and spa weekends – some prizes tintillating elegant dinners for multiple guests served by top chefs in your own home. Larry Hart’s Botannica did the decor and floral displays with marvelous theatrical aplomb, succeeding in balancing extravagence with good taste. Grammy winner Hart also sang. Is there no end to talent in some people?

Chefs for Kids is a non profit supported by the Fraternity of Executive Chefs of Las Vegas with the lofty goal of eliminating malnutrition and hunger through education and awareness. Working with nutritionists from the University of Nevada Cooperative Extension, the Program teaches young grade schoolers about healthy food combinations and making the right choices for their bodies. Last night’s gala event certainly added fuel to the Program with just one live auction gourmet dinner going for $18,000. Now there’s somebody willing to put his money where his mouth is!

Dragon Boat Festival

In the beautiful setting of Lake Las Vegas, 44 foot, teak Chinese war canoes will compete in three 500-meter race heats on Sat May 5, starting at 10am. Each canoe has a 22-person crew with 20 paddlers, a drummer and a steerman. Teams come from US and Canada to compete.

Ceremonies will start at MonteLago Village on Fri May 4 @ 6:30pm with the “Dotting of the Eye Ceremony,” a tradition which awakens the Dragon spirit. Enjoy a performance of the Shaolin dancers followed by a screening of “South Pacific” on the Events Plaza.

A local company ChemNutra Inc. has been named in the contaminated pet food controversy. According to the Associated Press, as published Fri Apr 27 in the LVRJ (Las Vegas Review Journal), a Kansas pet food manufacturer Menu Foods Midwest Corp. recalled 60 million cans of pet food after 16 pets, mostly cats, died from the effects of eating the melamine-contaminated food. According to US News & World Report Apr 28, the offices of Menu Foods and ChemNutra Inc. were searched by FDA agents.

Evidence is mounting that the tainted pet food is more toxic to cats than dogs. Melamine has now been found in pig urine at a California pig farm.

Wheat glutten is used as filler in the pet food. ChemNutra imports the wheat glutten from a Chinese company which ChemNutra claims was represented as a reputable source for high quality nutritional ingredients and which provided apparent proof that its wheat gluten was safe. Melamine has been found in Chinese-originated wheat glutten, rice protein and corn glutten, all used as pet food ingredients.

Melamine is a chemical found in plastics, pesticides and sometimes fertilizers, certainly not approved for use in pet food by the US FDA. A leading theory is that the melamine was deliberately added to fake higher protein levels. The FDA has set up a website for concerned pet owners: www.fda.gov.

This annual picnic hosted by the Las Vegas Jazz Society is free to the public. Happening on Sun Apr 22 at 2pm, it is part of the LVJS Jazz Month festivities. There will be four hours of non-stop music with a host of jazz artists: Manny Gomez and Bill Swick on guitar, Larry White, vocalist and pianist with his Quintet, and Quintessence led by drummer John Nasshan and featuring Walt Blanton, trumpet, Dave Stambaugh, sax, John Matteson, piano, and Geoff Neuman, bass. Hewett’s first success was with Shalimar, a post disco group. Great Party for Debut of Verge

The upcoming mid-rise condo project in uptown-downtown Las Vegas held a party last night to celebrate the Grand Opening of Verge’s Lifestyle Center. With police directing traffic on Main Street and the huge parking lots full, you knew the minute you arrived that something exciting was going on. A great white tent contained a vodka and wine bar with a menu of exotic and refreshing cocktails – hosted by Verge, thank you very much. Servers circulated with trays of delectable appetizers prepared by the Triple George Grille.

The Golden Nugget supplied a craps table and music was provided by DJ Mike White. We were treated to some live trumpet with a Latin jazz feel to accompany the electronic. The trumpet player, Rico Sanchez, also produced the event through Access West Marketing. A highlight of the evening was the performance of Las Vegas’ own Uncommon Connection, a small group of highly skilled breakdancers. This was their first professional performance. The Downtown Cocktail Room, their own Grand Opening just last week, was represented by lovely young girls in red knit dresses.

The Verge exhibited a Loft model, modern and spacious with floor to ceiling glass. They will begin accepting reservations on Mon Mar 19.

I personally enjoyed watching the crowd – hundreds of beautiful young persons, handsome guys and slim girls in short skirts and wonderful shoes. I could have done a photo album on the amazing footwear. I have no idea if men even notice such things, but feet were definitely the fashion statement of the night.

Lest we forget that not everyone is Irish, or wanna be Irish, I want to give a mention to the Spring Festival happening this Sunday, Mar 18 at Freedom Park. This is going to be an all day celebration of Hispanic culture with exhibits, food, and of course, music. What is any Latino celebration without music? The event is co-sponsored by the City of Las Vegas Dept of Leisure Services and the Las Vegas Mexican Patriotic Committee. There’s some great music being played at the yet-to-be-discovered Thursday night sessions at the Barcode. These weekly events regularly feature the Release all star band with contributing artists Michael Clark, Earl Turner, Gwen Guthrie, Bonnie Pointer, Scott Cannady, Grover Washington Jr, Kirk Whalum, Chris Clarmont, Darryl “Footz” Woolfolk, Jeffrey Osborne etc. A special treat for this week is the guest appearance of Rahb, who released his debut album “If I Knew” in September. Listeners to Power 88.1 are probably familiar with Rahb who has written and produced all the songs on his album. Rahb who describes his music as “bridging the gap between classic soul and contemporary R&B,” performs on keys and drums. Don’t miss the Chinese New Year celebrations at the Chinatown Plaza on Sunday Feb 25. As my calendar says that Chinese New Year is Feb 18, I don’t quite understand the date. I’ll do some checking and edit this if I get other information. At any rate, there should to be dancing dragons, Chinese martial arts, lots of color and food booths. The Las Vegas Hawaiian Civic Club will help with the festivities that usher in this most auspicious Red Pig Year (or Year of the Red Boar).
