This Friday is the monthly giant block party happening in the Arts District Downtown Las Vegas. All the galleries are open late and the streets will be teeming with native life. A growing tradition in a lot of towns these days, the First Friday in Las Vegas is indeed special. You’ll find lots of FREE live entertainment at what is fast becoming the monthly place for the young to see and be seen. The bar scene is hopping all over Downtown as the party goes on after hours.

Anime Vegas

The existence of anime clubs is a really interesting phenomena. I have watched a fair share of the Japanese cartoons (animation) and it just doesn’t strike a cord with me. But the world-wide appeal among a very select segment of the population is undeniable. These are a dedicated lot and they have a group here that meets on the 2nd Saturday for a marathon viewing from 10:30a-4:30p. They show chapters from several series and caution that some of the cartoons are not suitable for children. Admission is Free. Picasso Exhibit at Bellagio

It’s hot outside, so if you are looking for something to do in the cool, check out the exhibit at the Bellagio. Pablo Picasso is best known for his paintings and drawings, but he actually was a fairly prolific sculptor and ceramicist. Thirty of his works in the media of ceramics are on display at Las Vegas’ Bellagio Gallery of Fine Art, (started May 25) and will continue through January 14, 2008. “In the Master’s Hands: Treasures from the Estate of Pablo Picasso” includes figures of an owl, a bird, a fish and a bull with a series of portraits and scenes painted on tiles, plates and plaques. Last Day for Pauite Elders Exhibit

If you are looking for an interesting day trip, don’t forget the drive to Overton and the Lost City Musuem. Besides the regular exhibit, they are featuring this special treatise of Pauite Elders. It took over five years to create this project with interviews and photographs of Southern Pauite Elders. The participants include the five bands of the Pauite Tribe of Utah, the Kaibab Tribe of AZ, the San Juan Tribe of UT, the Las Vegas, Moapa and Pahrump Tribes of NV and the Chemehuevi Tribe of CA. The display was created by writer Logan Hebner and photographer Michael Plyler and continues until the end of June.

Free “Urban Renewal” Concert & Art Show

In celebration of First Friday and warm summer evenings, The Clark County Amphitheater will host a free concert with “Urban Renewal,” a new band that mixes jazz and hi-hop (call that nu-jazz.) Kevin M Bays, a local artist, will showcase his work based on pop culture, using collage media for expression of his “whimsical yet edgy” work. The artist reception begins at 6pm.

The Grand Art Competition – Opening Reception

The Cultural Division of Clark County Parks & Rec is sponsoring “The Grand,” a non-themed art competition open to all media and all artists over 18 years old who live in Clark County. There is a cash award of $1000 for the “Best of Show.” Stephen Bendee will select 15-25 pieces for exhibit, as well as the cash prize winner. Zion Canyon Art & Flute Festival

The 3rd Annual Zion Canyon Art & Flute Festival is a world event. Starting at 9:30a on Fri June 8 and continuing the weekend til 5pm on Sun Jun 10, enthusiasts and friends of the Native American Flute gather in Springdale Utah for workshops, concerts and sharing of the passion for this special art form.

Evening concerts on Fri & Sat begin at 6:30p and end at about 10p. The cost of admission to the Festival is only $2 pp or $5 the weekend. Children under 12 are free. Workshops are sometimes free; when there is a charge the fees range from $10-$40. Concerts are $20 per evening or $35 for both. This Memorial Day Weekend is the 19th annual Snow Mountain Pow Wow hosted by the Las Vegas Paiute tribe with artisans, singers and dancers from around the country. May 26 is a contest pow wow with 2 sessions 11am and 7pm. May 27 is a cultural celebration with starting at 11am. Artist Tsui @ The Gallery at Summerlin

If you want to see some marvelous paintings by a Chinese artist with 20 years of New York art scene in his work, and meet the artist himself, be at the Gallery at Summerlin Fri May 11 from 6p-9p. George Tsui relocated to Beijing in 1996 to begin “a creative journey into China.” That journey produced a series of works titled “Fair Ladies of the Past,” and showcases Chinese women in the splendor of imperial China. The artist’s “duel technique of painting and sculpture is traditionally ornate yet abstract in the most modern sense.” It is also incredibly beautiful judging by the piece in the promotional materials.

The event is a fundraiser for the Nevada Cancer Institute which will recieve a portion of the proceeds of the Gallery’s sale of Tsui’s art work. In addition, Collectors Editions, the publisher for Tsui, will also donate a portion of sales proceeds to NCI.

Work available for purchase includes oils embellished with antique wood details, unornamented oil paintings, giclees and oil sketches. A giclee is a high resolution reproduction of two-dimensional artwork, utilizing digital scans and special large format printers. They can be printed on a variety of media including canvas, vinyl and transparent acetates. This is a technology vastly superior to traditional lithography both in terms of vividness and longevity of color as well as crispness of detail.

Another celebration of Israel Independence Day? There was an afternoon event on Apr 29 that I wrote about. It seems the official date is May 14, 1948 for the creation of the state of Israel, a controversial vote by the United Nations that is disputed by many even today. But Israel is going strong and that memorable day is being feted from 12p-4p Sun May 13 with a Mother’s Day brunch, Israeli music and dance, booths from Jewish organizations, children’s activities, art and books from Israel, Jewish and Israeli short films plus a Ketubah exhibition with Dr. Shalom Sabar. Ketubah is a Jewish marriage contract.

Nevada Camera Club meets

Ladies Lost Weekend

This is a art retreat for the ladies (and their kids, if they want) sponsored by the Goldwell Open Air Museum in Rhyolite NV. The weekend activity is to site and restore a couch covered in tile and mosaic designed by German artist Sofie Siegman. The result of an artist residency at the Lied Discovery Children’s Museum in Las Vegas, the couch was donated to the Goldwell Open Air Museum which wants to provide visitors a resting place with a view across the Amargosa Valley and the Museum’s sculpture park. May 4-May 6.
The weekend is $50 ($25 a day) which includes meals on Sat and Sun, some mementos, and best of all, a Saturday night soak at Bailey’s Hot Springs. There is lodging and camping in nearby Beatty. Verge Music Stage (Colorado & Casino Center) features Afro-Cuban Jazz Band, the Uncommon Alliance Las Vegas break dancing group, Roman Beats from Ft. Worth and the LA new soul/experimental group, The Basiqs. The Land Rover Stage presents Las Vegas’s own Pickadillos, followed by XRPM and finishing the evening with Hedwig & the Angry Inch. I saw the Uncommon Alliance at the Verge Grand Opening Party, which was their first gig. I’m thrilled to see them getting some deserved attention.

Event hours are 6pm-10pm, but you need to check the schedule as individual venues vary. Alcoholic beverages must be purchased from Official First Friday Vendors ONLY. Be forewarned – You’ll have to throw away any other drinks/beers/etc when you enter the Festival area.

Prato Haggadah at LV Art Museum

The Las Vegas Art Museum is exhibiting an interesting slice of cultural history generally unknown outside of the academic or Judaic community. Most are familiar with Medieval manuscripts of the Christian faith, evoking images of brown-robed monks slaving away in distant monasteries, destroying their eyesight with flickering candlelight. The Jewish tradition produced a manuscript known as Haggadah which literally means “telling,” an obligation to recount the story of the exodus from Egypt for those who are unable to lead or attend a seder. The seder is the celebratory dinner and ceremony performed at Passover reliving the enslavement by the Pharaohs and the journey led by Moses to the Promised Land. A haggadah includes certain standard biblical, Talmudic and midrashic texts accompanied by full instructions for the seder, including menu and prayer. The Talmud and Midrash can be loosely defined as compilations of rabbinic discussions concerning Jewish law and ethics.

The Prato Haggadah, on display at the Grotto at the Las Vegas Art Museum, is from Moorish-controlled Spain, produced around 1300. It is among the oldest of Spanish Haggadot. The Moors (Muslims) were tolerant of the Jews during a period when they were greatly persecuted elsewhere in Europe. Known as Sephardic Jews, they thrived in Moorish-Spain as doctors, tradesmen, and scholars until their expulsion in the late 15^th century.

The Prato Haggadah is distinctive in that it is incomplete both in content and form. All elements associated with the Passover meal are excluded from the text; scholars only speculating as to the reasons why. What is most interesting about the manuscript is that it is unfinished. By virtue of its incomplete state, you are able to trace the processes and methodologies used in its manufacture. I had a similar experience in a tomb in the Valley of Kings, Egypt when it was possible to see exactly how the wonderful frescos were made, each step of the production process made clear by the systematic, successive stages of incomplete artwork on the walls.

There are 50 pages or folio on display in the Grotto, along with visual aids showing the production of parchment and quills, the basic materials of bookmaking. Parchment, which is processed animal skins, particularly sheep, became the substitute for papyrus which was only abundant in the Nile Valley. The Metropolitan Museum of Art used Raman spectroscopy to determine the chemical composition of each pigment used in the Hebrew script and illumination. The illuminations (illustrations) themselves are humorous and cartoon-like, even when handling issues of high religious portent. It would seem that Jewish humor goes back many centuries.

It’s a small exhibit, but large enough. The curator has done an excellent job of display and education. There is a free brochure from the desk which goes into great detail, including a useful glossary. The exhibit, which runs through Apr 22, is possible through the assistance of the Library of the Jewish Theological Seminary. Tropicana Theatres, independent movie house closes

When I started doing this blog about events in Las Vegas, I had NO idea how quickly things change in this town. I should have guessed that if buildings can go up and down in a matter of months, that events on the human scale would be measured in hours.

I am sorry to report that the Tropicana Theatres closed, and closed so suddenly that the CineVegas Film Festival is now scrambling to find a venue for their Art House Screening Series. My article on the need for an Art House movie theatre (foreign and independent films) seems ever more relevant.

CineVegas Art House Screening Series

Tropicana Cinemas, the former venue for the Screening Series has closed.???? The new venue is the Neonopolis Theatres, corner of Fremont & 4th St Downtown Las Vegas. The Art House Screening Series is the brainchild of the CineVegas Film Festival, featuring selected documentaries and foreign features exhibited in March and April. They are performing the outstanding community service of screening “independent, underground, foreign and documentary films that otherwise wouldn’t be shown in Las Vegas.” Kudos and thank you!

Nevada Arts Advocates Gala

The Nevada Arts Advocates (NAA) is hosting a dinner gala to honor its awardees who have significantly contributed to the appreciation of the arts in our community. Native American Arts Festival

The Clark County Museum is holding the 18th Annual Native American Arts Festival the last weekend in March with 3 full days of activities. The Friday is booked with thousands of area school children, but Saturday and Sunday should be great days to sample Native American cuisine and observe folklore in action. The Fesitval requires that participants and performers show certification of tribal affiliation, so this should be an authentic as you can get. Note: you don’t have to be Native American to attend. They will be serving fried bread, Navajo tacos and buffalo stew. The activities include crafts for kids, demonstrations of Indian art and performances of dances and rituals. Entry fee is $5 adults/$3 children (ages 3-15). The festival is a popular annual attraction, so you are advised to get there early in the day. 9:30a-4:30p. Sloan Canyon Hikes

Just south of town, an easy 20 minute drive from the Strip is the Sloan Canyon National Conservation Area with great hiking and Native American rock art sites. The BLM and Clark Co. Museum are offering guided hikes for the public at no charge, but the groups are limited in size and you need to reserve ahead. The hike is described as “moderate with some rock scrambling, about 3 miles round trip.” Children over 8 years old and accompanied by an adult. Get on your Harley or put down the top and get out of town for a gorgeous drive out to Overton and the Lost City Museum. The March photo exhibition of nature photographer Marcella Brendible makes a charming destination and a great excuse to explore the Valley of Fire State Park or Lake Mead NRA. Ms. Brendible is a Native American from Alaska and her work demonstrates her deep and spiritual connection to Mother Earth. The Museum, which has interesting exhibits chronicling the life of the native peoples who once populated Moapa Valley, is open daily from 8:30a-4:30p, with a small admission of $3 for adults/$2 for seniors and children Free. You can take the I-15 to Crystal and then Route 169 through the Valley of Fire, circling north to Overton, or you can drive north up Rte 167 through Lake Mead. I’d make a day trip out of it and head up one way and home the other. It’s only a little more than an hour, unless you want to savor the Marscape and take your time. 702-397-2193

Great name for a festival showing of movie “shorts” at Boulder City. The Dam Short Film Festival is the brainchild of Lee and Anita Lanier, who are staging the showing from Thursday thru Sunday. There are day and evening screenings at the American Legion Hall, 508 California, with headquarters at the Boulder Dam Hotel at 1305 Arizona St. This is a real treat and real bargain at $5 per program (discounted day passes may still be available.) If you don’t see what you’re looking for at any of the screenings, there is an archive of more than 500 DVD’s you can watch. The ensemble has something for everyone – international, animated, horror, historical. Boulder City makes a easy day trip from Vegas, just head south down the 95 and discover the tree-lined downtown and covered sidewalks with cafes and wine shops.
