Pure Spanish Horse Show & Theatre

The Foundation of the Pure Spanish Horse is presented Aug 29-Sep 02 at South Point Equestrian Event Center. Pure Spanish horses, known in Spain as the Pura Raza Española, are one of the rarest breeds in the US. Known the “Horse of Kings,” they are incredibly beautiful and good-natured with amazing athletic ability. To learn more about these regal animals, go to prehorse.org. Two evening shows of “Theatre of the Spanish Horse” at 7 pm Fri Aug 31 & 8 pm Sat Sept 01 feature world famous horse extremist, Tommie Turvey performing daring trick horse acts. With a billing of top national trainers and horses, look for other exciting performances including longlining (the horse is guided from the ground) and traditional Spanish riding disciplines. Peruvian Horse Gold Rush Classic

Jun 29-Jul 1 is a marvelous event for horse-lovers, especially those curious about the wonderful Peruvian breed first introduced into the Incan kingdom by the Conquistadors. Reputed to be the smoothest riding horse in the world, you can learn about the unique traditions and ornate tack that surround these majestic beasts. This Triple Regional Championship show will host competitors from around the US and Canada.

2nd John Deere Vegas Super Barrel Horse Show

Jun 08-10 Las Vegas is host again to the John Deere Vegas Super Show (2nd Annual) for the National Barrel Horse Association (NBHA). All competitors must be members of the NBHA, but memberships will be sold at the show. The association was formed in 1992 to promote the sport of barrel racing and last year over 700 competitors showed their stuff at the the 1st Annual John Deere Vegas Super Show.

They’ve got a website that will tell you all you need to know about joining and competing, including Coggins requirements, along with their schedule for events for the year nbha.com. I wasn’t suprised to see a Canadian affiliate, but the idea of barrel racing in Italy causes pause. I didn’t know there were any cowboys there – well, outside of those who made spaghetti westerns. Sat May 26 is the last day for the 2007 Breeder’s Invitational Derby with Amateur Finals, Non Pro Finals and Seniors Finals for premier Cutting Horse Stallions. This event is free to the public and would certainly be an unusual way to spend Memorial Day Weekend Saturday if you are looking for an authentic Western experience.

Grand Opening of Springs Preserve

Jun 8-10 was the grand opening weekend of the Springs Preserve, a multi-sensory nature and historical experience park with outdoor concerts, museums, restored environments, nature walks and other exhibits designed to educate on the human and natural culture of the Las Vegas Valley. The springs area was home to native Americans thousands of years before the Spanish arrived to name the area “las vegas” or “the meadows.”

Several “experiences” are listed as attractions: The ORIGEN Experience, the Desert Living Center, Gardens/Trails and a beautiful new Nevada State Museum scheduled to open in 2008.

ORIGEN captures the human story from early inhabitants to the possibilities of the future, a story told in 3 interactive exhibits progressing from long ago yesterdays to not-so-distant tomorrows.

Desert Living Center (DLC) is called the “green” jewel in the crown of the preserve. Buildings are the first LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) structures in Nevada. The purpose of the the DLC is to educate on environmentally sound protection of resources without sacrificing quality of life.

Gardens and Trails consist of 4 themed walking trails bordering the cienaga (wetlands) plant, bird and animal sanctuary and an 8 acre Botanical Gardens with a range of desert landscapes and hands-on activities. You’ll also find a children’s theatre, a weather station, a kitchen area for outdoor cooking classes and an Enabling Garden for those with physical challenges.

Hours for the preserve will be 10a-10p during summer and 10a-6p during winter. Prices for tickets vary according to exhibit access, age and residence (for example: NV adult $14.95, NV child $6.95). Art Festival with over 50 painters, sculptors, glass blowers exhibiting and selling their work. There will be live music on the The Courtyard stage.

Spring Fling at the Green is a family affair with art projects for the kids and live entertainment.

It’s a Dog’s Life at the Green will display 15 custom dog houses created by well-known home builders of the area. They will be auctioned on Sunday evening to benefit charity. If you are thinking of a family pet, be there for pet adoptions each day from noon-3pm.

A local company ChemNutra Inc. has been named in the contaminated pet food controversy. According to the Associated Press, as published Fri Apr 27 in the LVRJ (Las Vegas Review Journal), a Kansas pet food manufacturer Menu Foods Midwest Corp. recalled 60 million cans of pet food after 16 pets, mostly cats, died from the effects of eating the melamine-contaminated food. According to US News & World Report Apr 28, the offices of Menu Foods and ChemNutra Inc. were searched by FDA agents.

Evidence is mounting that the tainted pet food is more toxic to cats than dogs. Melamine has now been found in pig urine at a California pig farm.

Wheat glutten is used as filler in the pet food. ChemNutra imports the wheat glutten from a Chinese company which ChemNutra claims was represented as a reputable source for high quality nutritional ingredients and which provided apparent proof that its wheat gluten was safe. Melamine has been found in Chinese-originated wheat glutten, rice protein and corn glutten, all used as pet food ingredients.

Melamine is a chemical found in plastics, pesticides and sometimes fertilizers, certainly not approved for use in pet food by the US FDA. A leading theory is that the melamine was deliberately added to fake higher protein levels. The FDA has set up a website for concerned pet owners: www.fda.gov.

Pet Food Recall

This cartoon came to me through email. I don’t have dogs but I have many friends who do, and I know the topic is “life relevant” for them.

The latest that I can find is that one source of the melamine contamination originates with an imported rice protein concentrate from China. The shipment was offloaded during the week of Apr 2 by Wilbur-Ellis of San Francisco. Wilbur Ellis notified the FDA’s Center of Veterinary Medicine on Apr 15 that there was possible contamination problems.

The recall includes Natural Balance Pet Foods: Venison and Brown Rice canned and dry, Venison and Brown Rice dog treats and Venison and Green Pea dry cat food. resource: www.emxhealth.com
