Chronic Cellars wine tasting thumbs up

A smaller winery whose tasting room is nestled on Nacimiento Lake Drive was a wonderful, thumbs up discovery on the road out to Lake Nacimiento. Having bought Chronic Cellars wine at the local San Luis Obispo Costco, my friends were huge fans. No choice but to stop by.

Chronic Cellars has a nice new-looking tasting room with a lot of cool art work around the walls in a “Mexican Day of the Dead” kind of art style. I give the outside patio with chairs and tables under a huge trellis covered in various grape vines a big thumbs up.

It made for perfect shade with cool grape bunches hanging down like little chandeliers.

They offer $5 tastings which are free if you purchase a bottle. Lucky for me, my friends picked up a few. The wine is on the higher price end – $22, $30 or $35 dollars. Almost all of their wines follow the European style of blending, so it was fun to read about the different percentages of grapes that went into each one.

Most of the wines were quite good, but I don’t know if I could justify the $30-$35 price tags. Sofa King Bueno did really stand out though. It”s a mostly Syrah blend and on the lower end of prices at $22. An outstanding wine to me all round. One sip and all I could think was, “Where”s the juicy ribeye or new york steak to go with this?” It was also the favorite of the ones my friends had tried from the San Luis Obispo Costco. I ended up getting 2 bottles, one for me and one as gift to the group for taking me out to the lake. A big thumbs up purchase from me.

All of the bottles have interesting names and cool, impressive artwork. That alone is worth stopping by to check out. Another good reason to visit Chronic Cellars is the collection of exclusive labels sold only at the tasting room (absolutely not available in stores.) One of these special bottles is my 2nd favorite – The Unteachables.

The 5 dollar tasting fee is well worth it. The nice variety of wine (mostly reds) they serve make a trip to Chronic Cellars a must do San Luis Obispo County winery experience. Check them out: 2020 Nacimiento Lake Drive Paso Robles, CA 93446 (805) 237-7848  www.chroniccellars.com
