Non-tribal youth change their names on Facebook
A Point of View, Libya, Middle East & North Africa, Politics | Sandra | February 23, 2011 at 21:12Demonstrating the trend in consciousness-raising among the youth of Libya, they are going on Facebook and changing their last names which show their tribal affiliation. (al-Gaddafi, al-Obeidi, al-Megrehi etc.) They now choose to be known by the city they hail from or just Libya.
It’s a show of unity. In the first days of freedom, people greeted each other on the street using a last name that said they were Libyan – no tribal affiliation anymore.
