Dollar Drinks at South Point the real thing

Rex Reviews

10 out of 10 - must attend

Last Friday I attended the South Point for their dollar drink special.  I arrived around 8pm and the place was already packed, the first bar by the parking garage was full, and there were no tables or spots at the bar.  But waiting for drinks wasn’t really a problem.

I was skeptical when I first arrived about "every drink one dollar", but as soon as I ordered I quickly found that it was legit.  While sometimes they skimped on the liquor pour for some drinks, overall everything I ordered tasted right and was decently strong.

For example, I ordered 4 Surfer’s on Acid and the bartender made it with 3 shots instead of 4 - but when the price is only a dollar a piece, who’s complaining?  Literally every kind of booze was a dollar. They will give you well liquor unless you specify, but I was drinking Jack Daniels Single Barrel and Patron as well as some normally expensive shots all for a dollar.

A bit later we moved over to the sports bar where we managed to find a table.  By about 9pm the sports bar was completely jammed.  I waited 15 to 20 minutes to get a drink. I even started waiting at 9:45 to get a last round and didn’t get served until 10:10. The bartender still gave me the drinks for a dollar since I was in line -  very decent of her.

Overall I had a really good time, with a crowd of interesting people.  You cannot beat this for the price -  anywhere.  It’s the real thing - no Vegas gimmicks.

The offer is advertised only for the month of June, so unless they extend - Fri Jun 26 is your last chance for a boozer’s dream.

M Casino 32 Degrees Beer Bar Happy Hour

Rex Reviews

Last time I was at the M, I noticed that their Beer Bar 32 Degrees has a Happy Hour Sunday through Thursday from 4 to 7 with all domestic pints $1.

This is a better deal than you think because at 32 Degrees, "domestics" aren’t just Bud light and Coors.

If its brewed here in America, it’s a buck - including Samuel Adams and a wide selection of micro-brews - all draft and served ice cold.

Use Twitter to confuse Iranian security forces

If you are on Twitter, set your location to Tehran and your time zone to GMT +3.30.

Security forces in Iran are hunting for bloggers using location/timezone searches.

Thank you to www.peymanmeli.org for image.

The more people at this location, the more of a logjam it creates for forces trying to shut down Iranians’ access to the internet.

Please pass on.

BLAZED AND CONFUSED CONCERT

Rex Reviews

The Blazed and Confused Summer Concert Tour featuring Snoop Dogg, Slightly Stoopid, Stephen Marley, and Mickey Avalon is making a stop here out at state line performing in the Star of the Desert Arena in Primm

I am really looking forward to this concert - the lineup is rather amazing and should be one hell of a show.  I have never seen Snoop live but heard his concerts are a blast and Slightly Stoopid and Stephen Marley always put on a jam session.

This is definitely a must see if you can afford to go.  The ticket prices are a little steeper than the average concert, but you are also getting to see 3 headliners in show  - so I think its definitely going to be worth it.

Go to http://www.cttconcerts.com/ for the concert webpage where they have samples of all the artists’ music.

Larry Hart’s PRAISE at South Point Casino

I had the privilege of seeing Larry Hart’s production of Praise in the reception hall of Hart Mansion when he first launched the show before a small private audience of friends and special invited guests.

The rhythm and sounds of this unique show reflect Larry’s spiritual diversity with an eclectic mix of tunes and dance drawn from a full spectrum of religious and spiritual roots.  This is not just gospel born from the American South, but a global gospel praising the Lords of all beliefs.

But no matter the origin of the inspiration, each number is indeed inspired and that inspiration is quintessential Larry Hart - all heart and masses of talent.

This is the kind of show that just makes you happy.  Your consciousness naturally expands and your heart chakra nearly bursts from your chest.  Don’t miss it if you want more joy in your life.

Reggae in the Desert - Vegas Style

Rex Reviews

8 out of 10 - Highly recommended

Reggae In The Desert was jamming again this year.  For the past 8 years this event has had solid lineups and provided one of the best reggae music experiences you can find in Las Vegas.  I’ve attended the past 2 years - great bands and good times for a cheap price.

With 9 hours of music this year’s Reggae in the Desert did not disappoint. The weather was much cooler than a typical Vegas June afternoon - what a gift - it made sitting in the sun enjoyable rather than torture.

The lineup was pretty solid all day, with a broad range of musical styles - a pleasant surprise as I tend to find when I watch a lot of live reggae, most the bands sound the same.

One Pin Short, the opening band, played in a sublime like style, performing a few good covers but with a lot of original music as well.

Yellowman was the most interesting performer; being albino he looks like like a skinny Irishman but sounds fully legit with a deep throaty Jamaican voice. He was high energy on stage and interacted strong with the crowd - a good performer.

My favorite performance of the night was Third World, an almost Reggae-Dub style with a lot of jamming and solos -  all musicians very highly talented.  I was disappointed in the Ky-Mani Marley Show. He had a few good songs but only played for a little over an hour; I felt he didn’t put on nearly as good a show as Third World.

The venue itself was completely packed by 8pm. When I was leaving I heard that the show was sold out -  easy to believe as there was nowhere to sit if you didn’t already have a spot. The whole front of the stage was packed with standing people.

I like the setup of the amphitheater. I was able to sit down, but had enough elevation to see over the heads of the people standing in front of the stage.

My chief complaint about the event was there was a lot of waiting. The bathrooms always had an miles long line. The food lines were even more ridiculous. I had to wait almost 40 minutes to get some Jamaican BBQ; the food was really good, but I missed half of Third World just standing around.

The setup time between the last 2 bands was way too long, and while DJ Rhamma did a good job of mixing tunes in between bands, Marley took over 45 minutes to come on - way too long.

Event was hosted by Steve Edwards from The Reggae Ting.

Final verdict:  Reggae in the Desert well worth the $25 price tag.  Go next year.

Martha Stewart Radio Show from the M

Here’s another example of the free, fun, frivolous things you can find to do on a Thursday morning in Las Vegas.  Martha Stewart’s satelite radio show Living Today on Sirius XM  was recorded live from Studio B at the M Casino and Resort with an audience of invited locals.

A sample of the M’s sous chef’s braised pork ribs, nibbles of cupcakes from Retro Bakery and tastes of "Vegas" wines were highlighted by a visit from a cutting edge floral designer and a real Vegas-style showgirl.

The radio host Mario Bosquez was upbeat, entertaining and everything you would expect from a representative of a class act like Martha Stewart.  Studio B is a brilliant little spot with great seating and a fully-equipped kitchen primed and ready for TV/video viewing.

One of the audience expressed surprise that there was something to "see" on a radio show.  In fact, a radio broadcast in the genre of Martha Stewart’s Living Today is little different from a TV show.  The crew video tapes the guests (audience and interviewees) as well as snaps photos for the blog; it’s a multi-media event.

Your job in the audience is to applaud and be sufficiently boisterous to communicate enthusiasm across radio waves, ask questions, sample good food, be educated and entertained.  Not bad work if you can find it.

Living Today
Weekdays 1 pm - 5 pm ET
Hosted by Mario Bosquez.

Jubilee
Bally’s

The Showgirl, all 6 feet of her, swept her way to the microphone amidst wows and applause.  With a great personality and obvious love of her job, she carried her plumed headdress with confidence and aplomb.  The Jubilee cast of 85 with 9 costume changes each every night and a stage half the size of a football field gives you some idea of the production sophistication of this most Vegas of all Vegas shows.  Jubilee is a must see if you want to experience the real Las Vegas.  p.s. If you have aspirations of joining the show, grow to 6′ (male) or 5′8" (female) and be prepared for 2 shows a night, rehearsals and carrying anywhere from 10lbs to 40lbs on your head - while wearing 3" heels - if female.

Destinations by Design
Allison Hart

According to Allison, designer from DBD, the trend to green is also driving the floral arrangement market.  Allison brought a wheatgrass table arrangement with driftwood "vases," orchids and moss balls - all requiring very little water and made from recyclable materials.  Earthernware-appearing vases were actually made from newspaper, with metallic cores for holding the flowers.

Retro Bakery
Kari Haskell

A tight bundle of energy, Kari is so imbued with enthusiasm that she could hardly be contained in the space of Studio B.  Inspired by Dairy Queen from her childhood days in Oregon, she has developed her signature butter cream swirl in so many flavors and variations that it would take days to try them all.  Her husband is the cake master and together they are re-inventing the American standard in home-style gone commercial baking.

M Resort
Hostile Grape
Mark Thomas, Director of Beverages

Mark poured two wines from the selection of 160 found at the M’s Hostile Grape.  The two reds were from California, one a husky Syrah and the other akin to Chianti - both reasonably priced in the $10/bottle range.  A third white was from Pahrump NV, but not enough for the audience to sample.  The label Pahrump Valley Winery is a bit misleading.  If you visit, you discover that they mostly blend with grapes from California.  They have produced and released a locally grown Zinfandel - quite a feat for the Mojave Desert . p.s the restaurant there was good, worth the drive.  http://www.pahrumpwinery.com/

Maui eco business and lifestyle for sale

They call Las Vegas the 9th Island, so it seems appropriate for me to mention an eco design company based in Hawaii that is now up for sale.  It you have access to some cash (apparently there are a few of those people left) and have a hunger in your soul for an alternative livestyle, check out the link below to read about the eco business  Savage Designs with an Eco-RV.

Sunny Savage of Hale Paiku in Maui wants to transition to the next adventure and sail around the world in a floating mobile documentary film studio.

She is offering a 2 in 1 package - an Eco-RV home and an eco conscious clothing company.

After researching the globe for natural fibers, Sunny discovered indigenous Nepalese who wildcraft fibers and found a cutting edge designer to create Savage Designs, an eco conscious clothing company like no one else on the market.

The RV is bio-diesel, has eight solar panels, and a garage in the back that would be a great editing bay!  The interior is totally remodeled in bamboo and cork with organic bedding and other eco-friendly accessories.

Do yourself a favor.   Dream for a minute or two.  This may just be the opportunity you have been looking for.

By the way, if you are interested, mention you saw this on my site.  Most of my readers are not from Las Vegas - I have a big following in Germany, for instance.  I would love to know if someone from Augsburg followed their dream.

Obama-Reid Coliseum a night of joyous celebration

Last night the Coliseum at Caesar’s Palace was filled with supporters of Sen. Harry Reid, but it was President Barack Obama that elicited the sheer joy and exuberance that electrified the air.  Broad smiles and glowing faces, strangers interacting like old friends, the mood was one of both relief and gratitude.  So many in that vast audience had worked so hard for so long and now was time for celebration.

The last time Barack Obama was in Las Vegas, he was a candidate.  Last night he was President.  Even he quipped that he was impressed with his room upgrade from his previous stay at Caesar’s.  “We love you!” was shouted from the balcony – undoubtedly true, but for many of us, it is the idea of Barack Obama that we love and the ideas that he represents.  Mention of Sonia Sotomayor, his Latina nominee to the Supreme Court, brought a roar from the audience and a standing ovation.

Harry was, well, Harry – an unassuming guy from Searchlight, not a great orator, not a man brimming with charisma, but certainly a man with enough tenacity and grit to have represented red state Nevada for years in the US Senate, and now to work as Majority Leader with enough success to allow President Obama to list last night an impressive agenda already accomplished.

Say what you will about Harry Reid, he brings in the bacon for Nevada, his visions are forward-thinking, and his roots in working class America keep his feet firmly planted on the path to social equality.  He believes in an America where every person, whatever their background or ethnicity, deserves an opportunity to succeed.  Politics must not be the sole domain of the rich and powerful.  He understands that only by moving everyone forward, can the country move forward.

The evening started with two different local choirs which unfortunately sang without benefit of microphones.  What was the producer thinking – or not thinking?  There certainly is no lack of electronics at the Coliseum. Clint Holmes sang the National Anthem a capella – beautifully and, thank god, with a mike.  Maybe you have to bring your own equipment?  Rachel Yamagata and Sheryl Crowe performed several songs each, probably great for some, but without the universal appeal of Bette Midlers “Vegas at its best” closing acts.  Rita Rudner stepped in as Emcee finally – the first part of the show was loose and seemed to have been thrown together at the last minute.

Bette and Rita had ample opportunity to throw barbs at our previous President with Rita quipping that ex-Pres Bush was writing a book – a small one – a comic book.  Bette Midler confirmed with the audience “Wasn’t it great to have a President that was actually funny on purpose?”

I’m glad I was there last night.  It’s a wonderful thing to see joy and hope manifested.  There are plenty of problems out there, many that seem without resolution.  A few hours of happiness and unity are a welcome respite.

California Court upholds same sex marriage ban

Back in the Midwest on that great expanse of prairie, we used to dream of California as a beacon of light and progress and everything that we considered forward thinking in American society.

We used to believe that as goes California, will the rest follow in time.

I never thought I would see the day when Iowa was more socially advanced than the Golden State.

The California High Court has just ruled that the ban on same sex marriage, as voted by the electorate in one of California’s famous (and infamous) propositions, must stand.  They cited that the constitution allowed for the voters to make such restrictive legislation and that it was not the Court’s place to interecede.

I certainly am no legal scholar, but am certain there is adequate precedent in the law to support the Court’s position.  But I do feel grateful that the California voters have not voted to reinstate slavery  - although in a sense, that is just what this ban represents.  It this isn’t tyranny of rule by majority and violation of minority rights, I don’t know what is.

I hope that the voters don’t decide one day to make Spanish the official language of California  - or to deny still other civil liberties based on sexual orientation.  Could gays be required to carry special ID cards because the voters are hoodwinked into thinking that such an action would help save society from the scurge of AIDS?

More than anything, I pray the rest of the country will NOT follow California’s lead  - that we will move forward instead of backward in our national vision to provide equal protection under the law for all citizens, regardless of race,  ethnicity, gender, age or sexual orientation.

CineVegas 11, Las Vegas Film Festival, Jun 10-15

I’m not going to go into a lot of detail here about the 11th CineVegas Film Festival that runs June 10-15 at the Brenden Theatres at the Palms Casino. They have a dynamic website that will give you all the information about tickets, showings and star-studded events. (see link below)

When I am asked, which is often, about some of the greatest experiences I’ve had with SandraOfftheStrip, I always put CineVegas at the top of the list.  I’ll admit that I am an avid film lover, especially independent film, and this opportunity to see some of the best new directors and their work is a treat that no one in the Vegas area should miss.

If you don’t have the time to spend four days and nights watching exciting new films, both feature length and documentary (my definition of Heaven,) then go to the site and select a couple out of the myriad of choices in this year’s program.

If you are in town that week, you can buy tickets at the box office in the Palms.  Take a break from gambling or partying and treat yourself to a unique Vegas experience.

Check out some reviews I did of CineVegas 9 in the pages section of this site.
Check out the
CineVegas 11 website for full details of the festival as well as the Café Series being held at Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf.

Market Tea Room for delectable lunch or High Tea

Tea Rooms have sprung up across the country and seem to be holding their own in the recession.  They play to the ladies who enjoy civilized touches like tablecloths, cozy ambience, cups of freshly brewed tea and, of course, irresistible desserts.

The Market Tea Room at Antiques at the Market, with its High Tea of fresh scones, devonshire cream and assorted finger sandwiches is a charming retreat from typical Las Vegas.  But don’t think that this is a place for the delicate only; the sandwich and soup choices are hearty enough to satisfy any appetite.

Open Mon-Sat, the Tea Room is tucked at the front corner of the antique mall on Eastern just south of Sunset with access from the mall or directly from the parking lot.

Owner and chef, Carolyn Geiger, moves between kitchen and tea room with bowls of soups, plates of house-specialty sandwiches and elegant 3-tiered serving dishes overflowing with sweet and savory delicacies - all created in house. Gregory helps serve with a broad smile and an eagerness to please that makes you feel immediately at home.

The vegetable soup, with finely chopped ingredients was utterly superb.  With an imaginative combination of spices and herbs, Carolyn used fennel to introduce the delicate flavor of asparagus but let cayenne kick in on the back end for a delightful play on the taste buds.  The balance was just right - soothing and exotic with just a hint of picante.

The chicken salad sandwich on rich grain bread with cranberries and walnuts is a perenniel favorite.  If you’re in the mood for something more "fresh" to the palette, try the veggie sandwich with avocado, cucumber and dill cream cheese.

Hot teas of various types are always served, but the iced tea selection is perfect for Vegas summer months.  If tea isn’t your thing, you can dive into an old-fashioned root beer float.

Please leave room for dessert, or at minimum, one of Carolyn’s scones served with authentic devonshire cream and fruit preserves.  I tasted the best while living in St. Ives, and can say with complete confidence that you will not be disappointed.

Chef/owner Carolyn has a way of retaining authenticity while adding that special touch that makes her cuisine entirely her own.  No weird and strange concoctions for the sake of originality at Market Tea Room - just wholesome, hand-crafted delicious food made with a true love of the art of cooking to please.

This is a delightful spot for little girls in frilly dresses to experience a much-revered British tradition of High Tea that seems almost fairy-tale like in its charm.  Although there is a special appeal for the gentle sex, the diverse menu choices and excellence in quality draw a mixed clientele of all ages and both genders.  We shared the Tearoom on Saturday with a large family celebrating Grandma’s 84th birthday - I want to take my mom too!

Example Pricing:

$6.50  Hearty sandwiches with homemade breads and choice of side
$5.00  Market Fresh Salad
$5.75  Half sandwich and cup of homemade soup
$3.50  Bowl of homemade soup
$14.95-$18.95  High Teas
$7.95  Dessert Tea with assortment of sweets

Everything on the menu is made from scratch.
Reservations recommended for High Tea with larger parties.

Location:  6665 So. Eastern Ave
(Eastern & Sunset at Antiques at the Market)
Phone:     702-362-4832
Open for lunch Mondays - Saturdays.  Closed Sundays.

Facebook, Twitter and Shift Happens U-tube

Are you are like me, not so young anymore, but struggling hard not to be irrelevant?  Does your heart race and brain fog when faced with conquering new  technologies and accepting invitations to join Hi5, Linked In, Plaxo, Facebook etc?  And now there is  the fastest growing of all - "Twitter."

To Tweet or not to Tweet?  That is the question. Are you trying to decide?  Do you really want the world to know what you are doing via Facebook?  What’s wrong with old-fashioned email?  Are you overwhelmed?  Do you fell too old to keep up (or catch up)?

Do you ask yourself - "How is this going to improve my life?"  Is this worth the TIME?  Don’t I already have email, text messaging, cell phone and a blog?  How much technology do I NEED anyway?

Do you feel like the Universe is speeding away from you?  You’re not alone.  Take 5 minutes out and watch this U-Tube called "Shift Happens" developed after the 2008 Rome conference: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jpEnFwiqdx8.

When you finish, note it doesn’t even mention Twitter which has grown exponentially since the 2008 meeting in Rome happened.  Before you ask, "what meeting" - that part is less clear.  My research shows there were many world meetings in Rome in 2008.  I have posed the question to the U-Tube site.  But whatever the meeting, the info in the U-Tube doesn’t set off any alarms on my "BS" detector.

Gold Parties are fun, give cash and profit everyone

One of the hottest new ways to cash in on surplus goods that you have around the house is to hawk your gold jewelry, coins and even teeth at home gold parties happening all over the country.

Patterned after every other home party except for the huge twist of selling instead of buying, you go not to purchase more stuff you don’t need just to please a friend or colleague, but actually come home with extra cash.  This is one of the few times that your hostess invites you with the expectation that you will sell, rather than buy – and she is going to get a percentage of that deal.

At the party I attended in Henderson, invited guests came with their velvet boxes, silk bags, plastic cases and ziplock bags of rings, broken chains, single earrings, mother-in-law’s watches and any other bit of jewelry or coin they hoped was real gold.  Some brought extra bits and pieces to convert to mad money, others to supplement a fixed income.  One lady was taking her cash to buy groceries.

A small clear plastic box with gold-backed teeth yielded $300 after the teeth had been smashed with a hammer.  The seller was far happier with the hard cash than a cache of her 90-year old mother’s teeth.  A tiny bit grotesque, perhaps, but she needed money more than sentimentality.  It’s a position a lot of people are finding themselves in today.

Although not the purpose of the party, guests did buy from each other, or trade, as they liked.  The value was determined by gold weight, with the merchant pricing at his purchase rate - one that gave him a good profit margin - giving us the chance to buy some beautiful pieces at great discounts.  Certainly the buyer would prefer to buy the gold from you, rather than you sell to your friends, but they seemed to have more than enough to buy and were willing to assist any side sales.  They wanted us to be happy.  They want to book more parties.

The individual cash sales at this gold party ranged from $30 to $3000.  The buyers paid the hostess a percentage for holding the party and inviting her friends.  My hostess netted a cool $750 for a party of 25 that started at 1pm and ended by 3:30.  The snacks, cookies, strawberries and iced tea purchased at Costco cost about $70.  The hostess herself sold some of her seldom used jewelry and then purchased a handful of beautiful 14 karat cocktail rings, one with fire opals, from one of her invitees, paying the very discounted price of the gold only.

Our gold buyers were an attractive blonde and her very attractive son, both relaxed, professional and not at all pushy.  They set up the dining room table with a laptop, scales, small bowls for sorting each karat class (10, 14, 18) and a flat whetting stone to test the karat of each piece. They used magnets to test first if the piece was gold; gold is not magnetic.  Then they scraped an edge of the piece on the stone and used chemical reagents on the minute particles left on the stone to ascertain if the piece was 10, 14 or 18 karat.  They weren’t interested in anything less than 10 karat.

The piece was then weighed and the price calculated based on the weight of the object.  If there were several pieces, they were grouped in small bowls according to karat weight and weighed en masse.  There was no consideration given for craftsmanship, as all pieces were destined to be smelted.  There was no value given either to stones.  Stones could be removed before weighing, or the weight of the whole piece guesstimated. Single pieces like watches and charm bracelets were dismantled if one part was 10 karat and another 14 karat, or not even gold.  It was always your decision at any time to proceed or not.

They had fixed rates for each karat class (10, 14, 18), didn’t really disclose exactly how much they are paying per ounce, and no one seemed to mind.  Sellers were happy to have the money for something they didn’t value that much in the first place - or they decided not to sell.  Some had done some comparative shopping and believed they were getting a better deal than at the local jewelry store or pawn shop.  It might have been possible to bargain for a higher price per gram, but I didn’t see any of that going on and it didn’t seem to be the way it worked.  You wouldn’t dicker over wine prices at a wine party.

As it was always a choice to sell or not, no one left feeling “taken.”  The whole exchange was fun, exhilarating, fascinating, and profitable - and the ideal win-win.  The buyer was getting gold for a price that would give him profit when he resold to the factory and the seller was getting hard cash for something they had decided to let go.  The hostess was getting a cut.  There were lots of smiles all around.

World Affairs Council back with Ruan Zongze

I’m happy to report that the Las Vegas chapter of the World Affairs Council is back in action.  They have changed their name and merged with the local chapter of the NCFR (Nevada Council on Foreign Relations) to form the Nevada World Affairs Council

Their next major event will be an evening with Ruan Zongze, the Minister Counselor of the political department of the Chinese Embassy in Washington, DC.  Mr. Ruan’s topic is "China-U.S. Relations in an Emerging New World Economy."   The UNLV Institute for Security Studies is co-sponsor for the dinner at the Pinot Brasserie, Venetian Hotel

Both Members and non-members are invited to attend Friday May 29 from 6pm-9pm.  The cost is $50 pp, paid with cash or check at the door, and includes a 3 course dinner.  The no-host cash bar and social reception are from 6pm-7pm, with dinner starting at 7pm. Mr. Ruan will speak and allow time for questions.

Email: bsturmnv@gmail.com for this great opportunity to meet the Minister Counselor of China, Ruan Zongze.

Regular meetings of the WAC are held on the second Wednesday each month, 6:30p-8:00p, at venues alternating between the eastside and the westside.  There is a nominal charge (usually $20 pp) which may include a wine tasting or appetizers, depending on the locale.

The monthly meetings revolve around specific discussion topics such as "Peace in Peril: The Indian sub-continent - Afghanistan, Pakistan, India and the U.S."  The discussions are lead by a moderator with active group participation in the form of questions, comments and friendly debate.

The merger of the WAC and NCFR makes sense. Both have the same mission - to provide a forum for globally-thinking Las Vegans to meet, to be informed by national and international figures, and to discuss international events, especially the direction or misdirection of American foreign policy.

Las Vegas has a bad reputation for low intellectualism, probably not undeserved.  This group demonstrates that there are people here who think - and think about a world beyond work, daily life and the Strip. If you are looking to meet other people interested in the complex and intriguing U.S. role in global politics, this is the group for you.

Email bsturmnv@gmail.com for more information and be placed on the email list.

The M beer bar best in Vegas

I’m going to change my mind about the 32º Draft beer bar at the M Resort Casino Spa, Las Vegas.  I wasn’t enthusiastic about it on my first visit because I didn’t like its location next to the Sports Betting area, in earshot of a cacophony of slot machines.

But on the second visit, in the late afternoon, we sat at the bar and began sampling some of the 71 ice cold brews on tap.  I am ready to tolerate a little slot machine noise in the background for the opportunity to drink domestic microbrewery draft beer for $3.50 (including tax) and imported draft beer for $4.50 (also including tax.)  These are arguably the best prices in town.  I don’t know anywhere else you can get a Chimay for $4.50.

The service was extremely friendly - as is everywhere we went at the M.  We were offered several generous samples along with the 4 brews we ordered for a grand total of $15.  At those prices, we felt more than comfortable leaving a very generous tip.

It seems the Marnell Family may have achieved the dream - "build it and they will come" - even in a recession."

MY RECOMMENDATION:
32º Draft beer bar at the M is the place to go for beer lovers - excellent air conditioning, elegant surroundings, friendly service, incredible easy on the budget prices and a wide selection of fine brews, domestic and imported.

New M Casino Modern Chic Oasis

The newest addition to the Las Vegas hotel scene is the M Resort Casino Spa, a modernistic, drop dead gorgeous oasis palace of hip pleasure with spacious expanses of marble, structured amber glass and lofty ceilings.

First thoughts are why such a trendy palace so far from the Strip?  But on second thought, the M lies at the gateway to Las Vegas when traveling on the 15 from California, just off the interstate at the intersection of St Rose Parkway and Las Vegas Blvd South.  It’s also a short drive from Henderson and Anthem - an area recently one of the city’s fastest growing, and sure to be again when the recession ebbs and home sales and building re-commence.

The Marnell family, successful in the actual construction of casinos for others, has learned well from its experience.  The architecture is monumental, the style forward, luxurious but youthful and hip.  It should please anyone, although was definitely intended to attract a more urbane, under 50 crowd.

Citing lack of funds, Anthony Marnell III explained to the Las Vegas Sun that although he knew building a more environmentally smart structure was what he should have done, he declined the Lied formula based on costs.  Who am I to argue with a wildly successful businessman, but one can’t help but wonder if that decision was short-sighted.  It seems to be one that many builders take here in the Valley,  ignoring the harsh reality of looming energy and water crises.

Highlights of the M include a movie set pool area with a surrounding marble campus reminiscent of grand Egyptian temples - plenty of space here for any reception or grand ball.

They did a reasonable job on the sweeping canopy of the hotel entrance, but the M lacks a grand entrance which says "Here I am and here is exactly how you get to me." Anyone with a sprinkling of feng shui expertise would have spotted that right away. It’s not that hard to take the wrong turn and end up in the outdoor parking area.

They also need to do something about the valet pick-up. Totally exposed to the elements (wind and sun), someone forgot that many clients use the valet services to avoid the elements.

The lobby has splendid wow power with walls of elegant fresh lilies complemented by soothing cascading water elements.  It’s a pleasure to access restaurants and guest elevators without the obligatory pass through the casino area that haunts most Strip venues.

Baby Cakes
The Baby Cakes pastry and gelato shop serves exquisite sweets for great prices.  A large scoop of gelato in a delicious cone is $2.25 and worth every penny. You can get two scoops for $3!  The pistachio gelato was divine.  The gelato selection is limited, but certainly adequate for anyone, and I would place their flavor and quality on par with the Bellagio.  Don’t miss the croissants!

Hostile Grape
The Hostile Grape wine cellar on the lowest level is worth the drive alone.  With an amazing array of both good sipping wine and higher end vintages, you can either select your own from the myriad of dispensers or be served at the small bar.  Furnished with intimate clusters of low Italian leather sofa sets or high bar stools grouped around tall modernistic cubes, the low lighting and soft music make it the perfect spot to gather, partake and socialize in intimacy.  You take a glass and and using pre-paid tasting cards, select your own wine, 1,3 or 5 oz, from a selection of 160 - and enjoy.  Access to the Grape is by stairs leading down from the lobby or a glass elevator.

32º Draft Beer Bar
I revised my opinion of the 32º Draft beer bar in another post, and was grossly unfair when I panned it for it’s proximity to the slot machines and sports betting.  When you are savoring those incredibly priced ($3.50 domestic, $4.50 imported) and ice cold beers, you forget all else.

Veloce Cibo
We ate at the Tower Restaurant, Veloce Cibo, which did not disappoint in terms of spectacular view of the valley.  The menu was diverse which surely pleases in the way the variety of a buffet will satisfy the palettes of groups with varying tastes.  Much of it is designed to share, adding to the buffet-like advantage - while still being served at table.

Unfortunately, several of the dishes fell short - most notably the sushi which is their flagship. If you can’t make a California roll, you are in trouble.  I cannot recommend it at all. The tuna sashimi, au contraire, was fresh and delicious.  The fried calamari were not light enough, the batter being a little "floury" and lacking delicacy.  The chicken wraps were tasty and well spiced, with excellent lettuce (not iceberg), but not served with the crispy raw veggies that give them crunch and freshness.  The Asian marinated steak was superb and, by far, the best dish of the evening.

Although the staff tried very hard, there was something generally chaotic about the service and I kept thinking that much more training was needed.  The prices are not for budget-minded.  I am hard pressed to give Veloce Cibo a high recommendation for fine dining.

The M Guest Rooms
The
Guest rooms do not disappoint and the selection of suites, especially the 2 story 2400 sqft loft suites with wrap around views of the Valley, are sufficiently extravagant to impress most visitors. Keeping with trends, all rooms offer IPod docking and room safes large enough to accommodate laptops.

Dress
Geared to a younger set, the dress code is casual chic.  Designer jeans and tight T shirts, accented by some Vegas Bling and you are in mode.

MY RECOMMENDATION:

  • Visit for architectural experience - don’t miss the pool.
  • Don’t miss Hostile Grape if you are wine lover.
  • Savor a gelato.

Blue Martini is local hot spot in Vegas

Wednesday night and the Blue Martini is jammed.  What would it be like if there were no recession?  It’s refreshing to see high heels, sexy dresses and crisp shirts.  You get so tired of the slobby tourists on the Strip with their shorts, sloppy T-shirts and sandals.  This is Las Vegas, for *** sakes!

The Blue Martini, across from the Rave Movie Experience, at the top of the escalator and to the left, at the west end of Town Square, is pulsating with feverish energy.  Three giant bars anchor this sprawling hot spot, one with outdoor patio, one with live music stage and the last secreted in the far back with cozy alcoves for tête á têes.  With an outdoor terrace that stretches on two sides, there is always quick access to fresh air and open space.  The bathrooms are also buried in the back, which can seem like quite a trek if you don’t plan ahead.

The servers are sweet and sexy in their powder blue bodices, a vague reference to French cancan and Playboy bunny.  The bartenders, handsome young lads, pour genereous martini’s and are well trained to keep customers happy.  In fact, the service everywhere is excellent - friendly and casual without the pretensions of the Strip.

The live music in the middle bar is rock sold dance quality, although there is no dance floor per se.  But who can sit still to Santana, although the average age of the dancers is way older than the sitters.  Do we just get freer as we age, or don’t people know to dance any more?

Happy Hour serves $6 martini’s (regular $12) with beers about half that.  The food menu is diverse and the portions designed to set in the middle of the table and share.

Although most of the crowd is well under 40, you won’t feel ridiculous if you could be their parents. It’s a great spot and one I hate to write about because I’d still like to get a seat at the bar or a table when I go.  But if you are wondering where locals go - "to see and be seen" - it’s Blue Martini.

Did pornography or politics bring down my site?

Now that I have vented over the deletion of my site from BlueHost.com, I continue to speculate over what exactly happened.  Certainly the lame explanation from BlueHost does not shed any light on the real reason the entire database and all backups were erased from cyber memory.

The way I was so quickly shuttled from the customer service rep with a terse and quiet, "You need to speak to my supervisor about this," was the first giveaway that something odd was afoot.  Then when I’m given a lot of quick-talking mumbo jumbo from the supervisor about "abuse" and "overloading the server," my normally not devious mind begins to pose questions.  Finally, I’m informed that even responding to that single email within the short time period allowed would not have restored my site.  BlueHost.com would not be hosting my site anymore - period.  I would have to find another server.  How could I not ask what was REALLY going on?  Indeed.

Could it be that my site was hi-jacked by child porn pirates?  Might it be that a German gambling consortium had managed to squeeze through a back portal and seize control of my humble database?  Or had some of my articles, especially those on the disappearance of able-bodied Latino illegal aliens into our private prison systems - under clauses of the Patriot Act which cause them to serve lives as slave laborers with the name "Jose" Doe?  No one else was writing this story.  And not long after, judges are indicted in Texas for taking payments for each body (disproportionately Latino) they send to private prisons where the poor sods are forced to work to profit the corporations that run the slave labor camps.

I don’t usually adhere to conspiracy theories, but the deletion of my site without any real explanation and so clouded in mysterious language like "the decision came from the highest levels of our department" makes me wonder what really happened and why.

SandraOfftheStrip deleted from Bluehost database

You noticed that sandraoffthestrip disappeared in March.  Recall you have always been cautioned to be careful about what you put out on the web, cause once it’s posted, it’s there forever.  NOT TRUE!

My hosting server, Bluehost.com, COMPLETELY DELETED ALL FILES for sandraoffthestrip.com, INCLUDING BACKUPS, with only an email notice of 14 days and totally without my knowlege or permission.

Understand that this email notice was sent to an obscure email address which was used only for administration of the site.  I was in the middle of a big move and didn’t look at the site - or check its admin email - for a period of 17 days.  During this critical time, Bluehost completely deleted EVERYTHING without any other notification process - no second email to backup email address, no letter, no phonecall - NADA.  Just deletion without sufficient notification resulting in almost two years of writing gone, with no way to retrieve except in bits and pieces.

My account was paid, that was not the problem.  The explanation was that my site was first suspended, then deleted because of "abuse."  When I asked specifically what that "abuse" was, I got vague responses.  Apparently my SQL was exceeded.  Sandraoffthestrip had so many hits that my site brought down the other 300 on the server.  The probability of that seems very very slim indeed.  And if the traffic was that great (which is more than unlikely), then why wasn’t I switched to another server, notified of the change and asked to send more money?

I never received a satisfactory explanation from anyone at Bluehost.com.  In fact, their customer service supervisors were downright rude.

I had begun having problems with overloading warnings in Fall 08, when I made phone calls to Bluehost tech support and emails went back and forth.  With no further problems noted on my end, I continued until Feb 09 when the site was suspended, then DELETED, including ALL COPIES.  How much space does it take to save one copy of one database from one blog??????

The customer service rep informed me that the order came from the highest level in their department.  They also told me that even if I had responded to that single email informing me that the account was being suspended, they would have instructed me to find another server - that they would no longer support the site.

So what exactly happened?  Did my site get hijacked and used for porn or gambling?  There was certainly no visual indication of that when I viewed the content.  I find it reprehensible that Bluehost. com did not have the decency to give me a letter of explanation at any time during this process (or lack thereof.)

I CAUTION ANYONE WHO USES BLUEHOST TO BEWARE OF THEIR COMMITMENT TO THEIR CUSTOMERS.  They unilaterally DELETED the entire database and all copies with only one caution email.

I am only now able to get the site partially back up because I had used someone in India to help me with a few updates in Feb 08.  It is their copy of the site that you see now.

I had attracted a very large following in Germany (larger than in the US) which began last fall.   I had altered the focus of the site with articles and commentary on diverse, very relevant social, political and environmental issues.  All is apparently lost.

I can’t tell you how painful that was for me.  And Bluehost just doesn’t give a damn.  They may be cheap to host your site, but cheapest is definitely not best.  I’m now paying more ($25 a month), but believe my new host will have the decency to send me more than one email before they decide to dump me with no lifeboat or life preserver.

Why rural whites vote GOP

The following article was posted mid-Nov 2008 during the 14 month missing (deleted) time period of my site.  I was able to reconstruct it and am re-posting now.

With the election of Barack Obama, America selected not just a black President, but a visionary President with grand ideas for social reform and a better future.  Although there was some crossing of party lines and a general acceptance by independents of the more progressive Democratic platform, rural whites held fast to their GOP loyalties and favored McCain-Palin with margins of 70-30 across the country, especially in the South and Midwest.

A month before the election, I made a quick visit to my parents’ home on 200 acres of pristine Ozark woods, overlooking the man-made river-lake that rises and falls like an unpredictable ocean tide with the demands of the two hydro-electric dams that created it.  In the Ozarks of my childhood, whites aligned themselves to the conservative Democratic Party and the few blacks who could vote did so for progressive Republicans. No southern white Democrats today in this staunchly and proudly Republican corner of the world.  I’m told that, if there are any Obama supporters in the area, they would be found in Sedalia where the blacks and Mexicans live.

I was confused by my relatives’ and their neighbors’ adamant opposition to what they sneeringly called "socialism."  Weren’t the older ones living on social security and taking full advantage of Medicare?  Many locals have served in Iraq, mainly called up through the National Guard, a service they joined "part time" to receive government benefits.  They hadn’t reckoned on actually going to war, but when it happened, they went and left small children and financially-struggling wives (and husbands) behind.  Although they display proudly the American flag and staunchly defend the war, they quietly, and their mothers openly, count the days until their commitments are over - and pray fervently that they won’t be called to serve again.

They worry sick about getting sick and medical costs.  Few aspire to more than a high school diploma because of the prohibitive costs of community college.  Quality childcare for the working parent is not part of their lexicon.  The only support system is family. They work low-paying jobs, and spend evening and weekends doing odd jobs, second jobs or truck-framing to survive.  Living far from services such as grocery stores, doctors and work, a gas increase of $0.50/gallon can wreck havoc with the family budget.  They drive 50 miles one way in their gas-guzzling trucks to shop at Walmart to make their pennies stretch.

I was puzzled by their adoration of Sarah Palin and their belief that a socialist Obama heralds the death of America.  Convinced that the Republican Party is the only true representative of God and country, they fear the very changes in society that could vastly benefit them and ease their daily, anxious struggle to eke out a life for themselves and their children.   Why do rural whites vote to protect the wealth of the upper-class Republican?  How is the GOP underclass persuaded by appeal to patriotism, racial pride and religious belief to vote against their own self-interest?

Fiercely independent (how else could you live so far from every convenience?), their non-conformity does not extend to criticizing or questioning country and flag when there is war or perceived threat.  "My country right or wrong, my country."  But when you have sacrificed time, suffering, blood and even life to the battle your country called you to, it is not easy to entertain the idea that it could all have been for naught.  Who wants to admit that their son or daughter is just canon fodder for the paranoid ambitions of Republican powers in Washington - Republicans that they have so faithfully supported?

The rural GOP still clings to the feeling of god-given superiority that a white, "real-American" skin bestows.  It’s an emotional buffer from the harsh reality of their ever-diminishing status in the socio-economic hierarchy. Threatened by the advancement of "others" and feeling estranged from a new American culture they do not understand, the concept that every American who achieves contributes to a greater America escapes them.  Largely isolated by their geography and ideology, they don’t get that "All boats rise with the tide."

It seems strangely medieval that a political philosophy could be so entangled with religious dogma that the interpretation of words in a book compiled millennia ago would dictate politics and social mores in 2008.  It defies logic to allow the belief that a soul enters the egg at fertilization, or marriage may only be between man and woman, to condemn you to a life of anxiety and economic struggle.  It’s quite incomprehensible that a religious and political belief would idealize living at the mercy of fate and bad luck, with no safety net to catch the precipitous fall of your family when your strength fails.  But so it is for those 70-30 supporters of the Republican agenda.

Yet the Republican Party, even enjoying tremendous backing from strongholds like the Ozarks, will not survive as a political party based on religion, no matter how it tries to wrap itself in the flag and dress up its message in the American spirit of individualism and work ethic.  The question is whether the rural white GOP will continue to oppose social reform once its benefits are made available to them.

Barack Obama’s message spoke to the millions of Americans who sense that the American Dream could be better, must be improved upon, and that the promise of everlasting life in an unproven paradise is not adequate compensation for the fall from paradise Americans are experiencing today.  If President Obama succeeds in moving this nation into a new era, he might just convince everyone who needs help, including some of those who need it most - the Republican underclass.

UKLV Britcom Costume Party

uklv-1.jpgKnown in the UK as "fancy dress," but more commonly called a costume party here Stateside, this quintessentially British affair will host a buffet, live band, D.J. and plenty of that special brand of humor cultivated in the Great Kingdom of Comedy. The Brits are unabashed in their ability to poke fun at themselves and the world and can be positively irreverant. Creators of Spamalot and Monty Python, this national genius for lampoon takes no prisoners. You don’t have to be British to attend this party at the Empire Ballroom on Feb 22, but you do need to get your ticket for $25 and you must be over 21. Go to the website uklv.co.uk or call Steve Lee 702-252-0082. You are more than strongly encouraged to come in fancy dress (costume) as your favorite British comedian, humorist or comedy role and great prizes are planned for the best portrayals. The event runs from 7pm to midnite with free entry to the Empire Nightclub following. The Empire Ballroom is located @ 3765 Las Vegas Blvd S #G Las Vegas NV. Related Gathering of the Brits
